Haha, thank you sir. It has certainly been a tough week--the theater has been closed a full 7 days now in fact--but I've finally been watching some shows that I've been meaning to check out for a while (Succession, Party Down, etc.) and trying to decide on whether i should start Tiger King or season 2 of Narcos: Mexico next.

Decent read on the 2002 class. Totally forgot Mike Kudla died. Watching Tiger King sipping on bourbon, many mixed feelings. Have followed Doc Antle for a bit, didn't know he basically had a cult going on.
OVERVIEW ON THE 2002 CLASS: Ohio State was anything but special during Jim Tressel's first season other than the win over Michigan and the Buckeyes finished 7-5 with a loss to South Carolina in the Outback Bowl. But Tress shocked the world with an amazing 2002 recruiting class that saw a few of them as key contributors to a national championship squad. I was still working for Duane Long in helping him with his OhiosFutureStars magazine and this was the first group of recruits I actually made the effort to get out and see in person. Mind you, there was no HUDL in the day and we worked tirelessly to get coaches to send us film on their kids. We also still had our 100-member email list. This class was actually ranked No. 4 in the country and No. 1 in the Big Ten.

MIKE D'ANDREA: Was thought to be the greatest linebacker in Ohio in forever but I totally disagreed with that viewpoint and had no problem telling Duane to not rank him as the best player in the state. I actually went to see D'Andrea play against Bedford Chanel and I saw a runningback named Tony Franklin run over, around, and through him all night long. Franklin went to Virginia but he couldn't have weighed 175-pounds. We will never know who was right on Mike because of the injuries he suffered but I was the only person in the state who never bought the hype. D'Andrea committed to Ohio State on a Saturday night and the Ohio television stations ran a crawl on the bottom of the screen because it was such huge news.

DEREK MORRIS: I've probably said too much about this recruitment over the years and will leave it that he wasn't worth getting legally, let alone to breaking lots of rules for him. Was one of the top O-linemen in the country out of North Carolina and once I saw him it was clear somebody butchered that evaluation. Was forced to leave OSU under a cloud of violations and he wasn't missed on the field at all.

A.J. HAWK: Has become almost the poster child for poor recruiting evaluations in his day, but one person who had him as one of the best players in the state was Duane Long at OhiosFutureStars. We weren't getting the coverage of Scout and Rivals back in the day but our rankings were way better. This was all Duane Long and how he saw A.J. as a future star and he was 100% spot on. One of Duane's greatest hits.

TYLER EVERETT: No reason to keep crowing about evaluations because I went to the wall that this kid could not play for Ohio State and basically forced Duane to rate him at the back of the top-100 in Ohio. The sad thing is that I liked Tyler so much and look forward to running into him even today, but I was wrong as I could be on his ability. I had him as a MAC kid that would transfer out of OSU after a year or two, not a multi-year starter that would play a few years in the NFL.

BOBBY CARPENTER: We both loved this guy as a player and the key for us was the film we got from his dad showing him playing cornerback as a sophomore. As he got bigger, Carpenter kept the great lateral quickness and was such a good player for Ohio State. Was a first-round pick by Dallas but never really lived up to that as a pro. Wasn't the most physical guy in the world but he could cover guys and never had to leave the field.

T.J. DOWNING: Was surprised Ohio State took him but he ended up being a pretty good player for the Buckeyes and started multiple years. I saw him a lot in high school but thought he was more of a Pitt/WVU/Indiana type of recruit. His father, Walt Downing, played for Michigan and everyone assumed T.J. would go there as well. I still run into him in Canton from time to time, and he's doing well. He broadcasts local high school games and is really good at it.

MIKE KUDLA: Still remains one of the best looking physical specimens I've ever seen at the high school level, and he looked like an NFL guy as a high school junior. Was a great player for Ohio State and was doing well after college until his recent untimely death. Played linebacker at Medina Highland and just destroyed people before moving to defensive end at Ohio State. I saw Andy Katzenmoyer in high school and Kudla was almost as intimidating.

TROY SMITH/JUSTIN ZWICK: When these guys entered OSU, Zwick was thought to be a possible freshman starter while Smith was looked at as an athlete that would probably switch to wide receiver. People forget that Troy's first game action at OSU was as a punt returner, while Zwick came in with so much hype and fanfare. I never bought the hype on Zwick for two reasons: (1)- I had seen him play more than a few times and didn't see the arm strength or the ability to process things quickly and (2)- more importantly, a conversation I had with legendary high school coach Thom McDaniels. I trusted McD explicitly and when I asked him if he thought Zwick could start as a freshman, he told me: "I don't know if he will ever start at Ohio State. The Glenville kid is way better and it's only a matter of time until Tress sees it that way too." That was blasphemy at the time but McD was right as always. He also told me to not put his name behind that publicly but enough time has passed by now, LOL.

MAURICE CLARETT: While Charles Woodson is the greatest pure football player I've ever seen in Ohio and Andy Katzenmoyer is the greatest defensive player, Reecie is the greatest offensive talent of all-time to me. I saw him play five times in high school and thought he could do anything on a football field. One of the first times I saw him was a game against Cincinnati Moeller. Clarett saw a hole after taking a handoff and he exploded into the hole at the same time a Moeller linebacker read the play and filled that hole aggressively. Those 2 were about the same size and they hit head-on, with Clarett running through him like players run through the paper banner before the start of the game. I guess Clarett was long gone but I was on the sidelines and couldn't take my eyes off the linebacker, who was lying on the ground holding his shoulder with his body twitching convulsively. That remains the hardest hit I've ever seen in high school and it was a back hitting a linebacker. He still put together the greatest game I've ever seen when as a senior at Warren Harding they played Lakewood St. Edward in the playoffs at Kent State (FILM ABOVE). In the first quarter and a half, Warren lead 42-0 and Clarett had over 300 yards and 5 TD's. Because they were killing them, Clarett only ended up with 405 yards but I never saw anything like it then, nor have I seen anything like him since. He should be finishing a Hall of Fame career in the NFL right now but he made some bad choices and he remains a shooting star that came and went in the blink of an eye. He was the best player in Ohio his senior season and nobody came close in my opinion.

They literally aren’t testing here though. Posted this in the larger thread yesterday, but one of my wife’s friends took her mother in law to the ER at UC with a fever, cough, and other symptoms.

They didn’t have enough tests to administer one. Told her to go home and self quarantine.

We have no idea who has this virus unless they are serious enough to be hospitalized or important enough to be screened.

Those who know Trey Sermon say running back will fulfill his potential with Ohio State football team

    By Bill Rabinowitz

After his junior season at Sprayberry High School in suburban Atlanta was cut short by a back injury, Trey Sermon began rehabilitating with a local speed coach.

"When I first met him, Trey was walking like an old man, which caught me off-guard," said Charles "Tuna" Burhanan, whose brother-in-law was the Sprayberry track coach. "He'd gone through rehab and was walking like nothing had been fixed."

So they trained carefully. By the spring, Sermon was healthy enough to run track, though he did so gingerly. Burhanan has other clients, and one of them was a quarterback at Harrison High School named Justin Fields. Fields and Sermon would work with a group of about 10 football players.

Once Sermon was fully healthy, something became clear to Burhanan: "I always thought that Trey and Justin were just at a different level than a lot of kids that I worked with."

It wasn't just raw talent. Like Fields, Sermon has a laid-back personality that belies a deep competitive streak and a strong work ethic.

"They're very wise and mature for their age," Burhanan said.

Now Fields and Sermon will be college teammates, after Sermon announced Sunday that he would enroll at Ohio State as a graduate transfer from Oklahoma.

Just as Fields' transfer from Georgia last January was crucial in the Buckeyes' run to the College Football Playoff, the arrival of Sermon could prove pivotal to the 2020 team.

Master Teague III, the heir apparent to 2,000-yard runner J.K. Dobbins, suffered an Achilles injury on the first day of OSU's spring practice. Marcus Crowley, who was the third-string running back as a freshman last year, is rehabbing from a knee injury that cut short his season.

If there's a void – and even if Teague and Crowley are healthy – the 6-foot-1, 220-pound Sermon has the ability to fill it. As a role player in his three seasons at Oklahoma, Sermon averaged 6.1 yards per carry while rushing for 2,076 yards and 22 touchdowns. He added 36 receptions for 391 yards and three touchdowns.

Sermon combined vision with speed and showed the power to gain tough yards.

But the belief by those close to him is that Sermon is poised to do more. Part of it is that Ohio State was Sermon's first choice out of high school. But after his back injury, the Buckeyes' interest cooled.

"He was a little disappointed, but we moved on," said his mother, Natoshia Mitchell. "He did the best that he could do at Oklahoma, and then he wanted to grow more."

Sermon's junior season at Oklahoma was cut short by what Mitchell said was a lateral collateral ligament injury to his left knee.

"It wasn't torn or anything," she said. "It was just pulled."

It required surgery, which was performed by the same doctor who operated on former Sooners running back DeMarco Murray two years earlier.

"He told us that Trey's injury was not bad at all, that he's seen worse, that Trey will bounce back within a couple months," Mitchell said.

She said her son was considering a transfer before the injury. After it, Mitchell said, he decided that he would indeed enter the transfer portal. Once he did, there was no doubt where he would land, she said.

"He didn't want to hear from any other school," Mitchell said. "He was like, 'Ma, do not talk to anyone else. Ohio State reached out. That's where I'm going.' "

She said Sermon is training in Houston and will graduate from Oklahoma in May and then head to Columbus.

"I think we will see the Trey Sermon that has not been seen yet," Mitchell said.

Burhanan and Sermon's high school coach, Billy Shackelford, share that opinion.

"I used to always get on Trey about his sense of urgency when he was playing," Burhanan said. "Trey is very intense and very emotional. Sometimes it'll help him and sometimes it can hinder him. I saw a lot of times the frustration he was going through, it was hindering him, so to me it seemed he was functioning at only 75% or 80%.

"Going to Ohio State, you're going to see Trey functioning at 100%, and it's going to be a whole different sense of urgency. Everything's going to be at a high level. I don't think that's going to happen — I know that's going to happen."

Shackelford believes Sermon has 2,000-yard potential.

"I know that he wants to be the marquee guy," he said. "I know that he's a great teammate. He's an easy kid to coach. He's a true blessing, man.

"He's got a great mama, comes from a good home. If somebody told me they'd give me 100 bucks to say one bad thing about him, I'd be out the money because he's just really a true character kid and a helluva talent."

If he's as good as advertised, one of the most glaring question marks about the 2020 Buckeyes could be answered as definitively as Fields solved the quarterback issue a year ago.
