Netflix "limited series"(*) that came out on Friday

High school drama about a girl that kills herself, and the people/reasons that led her to that fateful decision. just finished. get's a bit "teen drama" and suffers from the netflix midseason lull, but...damn. thought it was really well done and the finish is terribly powerful

    *
They seemed to be setting up a 2nd season in the final ep. i think others will agree that seems tenuous at best after watching this season. there are some really strange/out of the blue things that happen at the end (alex tries to commit suicide? what??) that suggests a second season and kind of took away from the ending, but hopefully Netflix wises up and keeps this at 13 eps.

On the 11th episode. Honestly the first couple episodes were rough with the terrible teen acting, but this is incredible.

Watched it over the weekend. Incredibly compelling.

The scene in the final episode where Hannah slits her wrists had my stomach turning so bad. Couldn't believe how real that looked

The finale absolutely destroyed me. Agree with you, laxjoe , about it seeming like there will be a second season based how they left some of the characters. But honestly that's the saddest show I've ever watched. I'll never watch it again.

Feels like they're definitely doing a second season. Could see it centering around Tyler shooting up the school after they showed all the guns and ammo he had hidden. Agree about it being the saddest thing I've ever watched. I woke up the next morning feeling legitimately depressed. The bathroom scene just kept playing over and over in my head.

I liked it. Some cheesy acting at a few points, but very well done and I couldn't stop watching.

    Top 5 Netflix original.

Midway through episode 3. When does it start actually revealing anything other than a bunch of bull shit high school drama? I'm glad I mostly avoided all the HS drama, HS looks like it sucks on TV.

Had some pretty major problems with the show. You really want me to believe some of the reasons outlined were major enough for people to conspire to cover up two rapes at minimum? Come on man, that makes every single person who listens to the tapes a pretty big piece of shit and it makes it hard to root for them in any way. Especially with the time frame that is played out. Especially people like Zach or the poem guy, completely benign slights that people would shrug about WHEN THEY HEARD ABOUT MULTIPLE RAPES BEING COVERED UP.

Not to mention lawyer bros correct me if I'm wrong, but theres zero way Clays Mom is allowed on that case, and then when he gets called to be deposed she STILL is on the case?

Some strange attempts at red herrings that were really strange and unnecessary too.

Oh and fucking Tony looks like hes pushing 40.

Overall I liked it and god damn that last episode was brutal, but they really bungled some easily fixable things that would have made it a great show about empathy targeted at teenagers.

Sorta agree, sorta disagree. I'd say the final episode has some pretty big payoffs. I was telling my girlfriend I wasn't feeling all that emotionally invested in the shit and was just watching for the mystery, but the last episode did strike a chord. That was pretty heavy.

Wife and I watched it all this weekend. It entertained and also depressing. I just wonder what affect that show would have on a teenager who was going through something similar. I mean, it's about a girl who didn't think she mattered, but the whole show was based around her. I know the show was trying to bring awareness to the subject but I also think, in a way, could influence a kid in the wrong way.

    Questions/thoughts about Alex/ending:

So it's revealed Alex had a gunshot wound to the head at the end, now did he do it himself or was he shot by Tyler? We see Tyler trading for the gun and the chest full of guns, we also see him pull down a picture of Alex in the dark room, almost like being crossed off a list.

Alex also seemed like the type to do it himself, he was very depressed and self destructive. Him cleaning his room and straightening his closet was similar to Hannah. Thoughts?

A suicide prevention advocacy group is speaking out about the new Netflix original series "13 Reasons Why," saying that the show — a teen drama centered on a high school student who kills herself — could do "more harm than any good."

The show, based on a young adult novel of the same name and co-produced by Selena Gomez, revolves around 17-year-old Hannah Baker, who takes her own life and leaves behind audio recordings for 13 people who she says were part of shy she killed herself.

"There is a great concern that I have ... that young people are going to overidentify with Hannah in the series and we actually may see more suicides as a result of this television series," said Dan Reidenberg, the executive director for Suicide Awareness Voices of Education, a nonprofit group with the mission of suicide prevention.

"I've heard from others that are really concerned because its so sensational and so graphic that they're worried about the copycat effect of suicide," he added.

Kate Walsh talks about '13 Reasons Why'

Inside '13 Reasons Why,' the Netflix show that tackles teen suicide

Suicide is the second leading cause of death among those ages 15 to 34, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

"The way things are portrayed in the media does have an effect on the way suicides can happen. This is particularly true for young people that are very vulnerable and at risk of suicide," Reidenberg said. "When they're exposed to images that are really graphic, really sensational, and there is nothing balancing out for them ... that they can get help and that treatment works and recovery is possible ... we see them actually replaying what they've seen."

"The show actually doesn't present a viable alternative to suicide. The show doesn't talk about mental illness or depression, doesn't name those words," he added. "My thoughts about the series are that its probably done more harm than any good."

SAVE partnered with another suicide prevention group, the Jed Foundation, to provide tips for viewing "13 Reasons Why" and talking points for parents and teachers discussing suicide with young people.

Child psychologist Janet Taylor said she applauds Gomez for addressing mental health issues on the show.

"I think we don't talk enough when things aren't going well," she said on ABC's "Good Morning America." "I had one patient say, 'I have to be perfect because I'm so flawed.' Where did she get that?

"We have to break the silence, talk to our parents, talk to counselors," she added. "If you have a family history of mental illness, be aware of it, talk to your children. If your child makes a threat about wanting to hurt themselves, take it seriously."

Producers for the show said they hope the series can help those who may be struggling with thoughts of suicide.

"We wanted to do it in a way where it was honest, and we wanted to make something that can, hopefully, help people, because suicide should never, ever be an option," Gomez said in "Beyond the Reasons," a video released by Netflix to accompany the series.

Co-producer Brian Yorkey added that the show's creators "worked very hard not to be gratuitous, but we did want it to be painful to watch, because we wanted it to be very clear that there is nothing, in any way, worthwhile about suicide."

Jay Asher, the author of the book "13 Reasons Why," said, "Suicide is an uncomfortable thing to talk about, but it happens, and so we have to talk about it."

"It's dangerous not to talk about it, because there is always room for help," he added in "Beyond the Reasons."

Members of the production team said they consulted with mental health professionals extensively while making the series and provide suicide prevention resources and information on crisis hotlines in more than 35 countries on the website 13ReasonsWhy.info.

Daniel Feinberg, a television critic for The Hollywood Reporter, told ABC News that the show definitely "demands conversation."

"The show is about how if we don't treat each other better, if we don't have conversations, if we don't communicate, horrible things happen," he said. "People end up feeling alone, and people end up feeling hurt, and then when people feel alone and hurt, that's when they do things like this."

high school is 100% worse now imo with all of the social media bullshit. My cousins and I were just talking about this with the younger cousins. The fear of FOMO is so much worse now and then you have people that are called friends who say they dont want to go out and then you see them in the background of someone's snap story and it hits you like a ton of bricks.

    You sound really fucking stupid

    1. Doesnt that make Hannah a piece of shit since she didnt say anything to Jessica or the police about that rape when she eye witnessed the damn thing? Does anyone even know Hannah was raped before the tapes were released and the deed was done? Looked like most everyone left the party when Bryce raped her, same with Jessica's rape with just Hannah and Justin there.

    2. High schoolers are not the moral high ground ever. They are legit scared from the backlash of the school and general student population in calling out one of the most popular kids in school with little to no evidence and the kid is one of the wealthiest in school at that. That is a legit concern to them because they are just in high school and don't really know any better until its too late

But of course you were probably not like that in high school because you are so god damn mature and what not.
