Kendrick was amazing live at Bonnaroo headling. Lil Wayne/Two Chainz was solid last year. Lil wants at bonnaroo a few years ago was alright but he was doing half his rock shit. ASAP Rocky was one of my top five or so acts I saw last year and I saw just over 100 sets. Saw Run the Jewels last Saturday for the third time last Saturday and it was fucking amazing. Both times I've seen Kanye he's been great. Other rap acts that have been good to great live, Outkast, Gambino, ASAP Ferg, Cudi, Tyler, Danny Brown,Eminem, Ice Cube off the top of my head. The rap shows that seem to suck tend to be wu-tang and other large groups that it's so many people rapping or coming in and out it's a mess.
I about fell asleep at Gambino when I saw him at Bonnaroo. Chance was good but I only caught the tail end. Danny Brown was god awful, used that stupid fucking horn every 30 seconds.
Festival lineups tend to track the preceding year's big music trends. Since 2016 was an enormous year for rap / R&B, it's no surprise that lineups are tending to be more rap heavy then they have in years past. Just at Coachella this year, you have Kendrick headlining, Future and Travis Scott billed third on their day, and Schoolboy Q and Gucci Mane both getting second line billings. Compare those 5 names to 2015 which had 1 rapper on the first two lines (literally just Drake headlining) and 2016 which had 2 (Ice Cube and ASAP Rocky). I've personally never been a huge fan of live rap so am interested to see how these sets perform, especially someone like Travis Scott who is noted for being inconsistent live performing one of the biggest sets of the day at both Coachella and Bonnaroo. Also interested to see if Kendrick will be performing new material or with a new band given he now has multiple fests booked this spring vs. repeating the same set he's done for 2 years.
rap concerts depend on the venue and a daytime music festival show or just a huge open area is a recipe for shit seen Run the Jewels and Danny Brown in ~100 person venues and they were amazing Gambino twice at festivals / stages in a park - meh. Outkast, Kendrick, A$AP at festivals at night - awesome Schoolboy and Kanye at big outdoor venues - awful kanye and jay-z indoors - awesome
Well...seems like your opinion is pretty shit. I left Chance after two songs. You're probably thinking about someone other than Danny Brown, there wasn't much airhorn at all, at least not in his songs. Also, if you fell asleep during Gambino how the fuck did you have energy for Chance.
Just saying what I experienced. 2012 Danny Brown was literally non-stop with the horn shit. 2012 Childish was slow in the middle of the afternoon. Chance 2014 was a fun late night. Sorry our opinions are different.
I should know this, but what's the general format of JazzFest? Like 6 nights over two weekends with a completely different lineup each day? So on a typical day you would see like Tom Petty, Snoop Dogg, and Wilco or something? And how much does it cost for a day or for the whole fest? Not gonna go, just curious
Paul McCartney had to back out, unfortunately. Not my favorite people, but Jazz Fest is always a great time regardless of who is playing. All of the local acts are enough to bring me out every year
Thursday-Sunday over 2 weekends. Day passes last year were up to 60 or 70 I think. Not sure about a weekend but I want to say it was somewhere around 180-200 for a weekend. Thing about Jazzfest is the music ends around dark. So you have all night in NOLA with a ton of artists playing around town. Jazzfestgrids.com has the late nights.
Merlefest is a country and bluegrass festival that is a fundraiser for a community college near my hometown. To be a tiny and independent show they usually have a really good lineup. http://merlefest.org/
Damn that's a lot of talent. It would be cool as hell to see all those artist in a short time for $300 or whatever.
A new festival from the organizers of Coachella and Bonnaroo, AEG and Superfly, could be landing in Denver by 2018. According to Westword, the so-called "super festival" is slated to be held at the Overland Park Golf Course, the oldest course in Colorado. A meeting was recently held at the course's clubhouse, with local officials estimating that this new festival, which would welcome around 50,000 people, will generate $1-2.5 million for the city. Chuck Morris, CEO of AEG Live Rocky Mountains, told Westword that he's been plotting this event since the company's Mile High Music Festival held at Dick's Sporting Goods Park shut down after three years. ""We're in the phase of looking at all options," Morris said, also noting that it is "far from guaranteed" to happen. Stipulations from initial meetings between promoters and the local officials include that music will take place over one weekend in mid-September with music ending by 10 PM each night. The golf course will be closed for five weeks for renovation. Further meetings will take place in the near future.
