Think the public views athletes as being way more calculated than they actually are. Like the majority of people, probably had an inclination of what he wanted and needed some convincing to get there.
I think Tavares is a smart guy, really wants to lift that Cup, and knew the best way to make that happen was to get to FA so Toronto could sign him without giving anything up but cap space. Not much of a mastermind plan, just common sense.
Tavares just did the Isles a solid by being on a bargain 5.5 million dollar contract for the last 5 or so years and they still couldn’t get him someone to play with

Point shares is an interesting way of debating the different eras. I hate how the 80s/early 90s players are severely overrated while the post-devils mid-late 90s through 2010 or so are underrated. Nhl has taken some steps in the last few years to make the game more offensive but not at the level of fairly being able to compare stats with the 80s. That said Gretzky and Mario are still gods.
