There's no way Sutton can survive. So of course he will be back. Reworking Berry's deal should be a priority. I'd also consider walking on Houston if these cap savings are to be believed. I'd also franchise Ford - I don't trust him enough to sign a multi-year extension. https://overthecap.com/salary-cap/kansas-city-chiefs/
Eric Berry sucks now. Another year and a surgery hung on him is 100% not worth the money. Move him while you can. His one job was don’t get beat by Gronk in OT for 10+ on 3rd down. He got beat by Gronk in OT for 10+ on 3rd down.
Houston walks. Tag Dee. Pay your offensive weapons. Get a deal with Chris Jones on the books now. Eat a little this year to save yourself long term. It’s nice we found out about Pat right now and have an extra year to be thinking about what to do with money to maximize him. If he had a meh year and didn’t break out until next then we probably overpay this offseason for someone. Which means we have more on the books and have to make more drastic moves to make him work when his big deal comes due.
That's basically the point. He knows a lot more than nearly anyone else on earth but still makes the most bizarre decisions that would make even a novice wonder what the fuck. Keeping Bob Sutton around for starters.
They were asking this question on the radio, did Dee Ford commit the biggest mistake in KC sports history?
Alex Gordon not running hard out of the box comes to mind, but I can't think of much else. Lin Elliott is a candidate as well.
Getting Ldt back will help and it'd sure be nice if we didn't keep losing him. They will have to figure out something at Center since I'm sure Mitch Morse is gone. Would spend a Day 3 pick on some competition at LG. My biggest focus would be finding someone that can win at the Line of Scrimmage on Defense and covering a receiver.
Jones and Bailey aren’t bad. It’s that the OL could focus on double teams at the LOS because our ILBs couldn’t make stops and didn’t need much blocking attention. You take the first 2 levels out of the equation and it’s Eric Murray and Ron Parker and Dirty Dan making all your run game tackles. That or hitchens getting run over for 7 and tripping up the RB with his whole self sprawled out on the ground.
Maybe Dexter Lawrence at 30? Would be nice if that drug test pushed him down into the late 1st round.
You could make a real good case for him, yes. I want to say the first pick should be corner, no matter what. But with the Chiefs drafting so late and a Bama corner going back to school, I wouldn't reach hard to fill a need. I think Ward is a keeper and Fuller is a keeper, but they gotta find a #1 somehow. Not sure what they're gonna do about that.
I could see going DL if we decide to let Baily walk, but I would love to upgrade the ILB, it would change the entire Defense if we had a top third ILB. we will tag Ford, ask Berry to adjust his contract, pay Mahomes, let Morse walk (unless Mahomes says he really wants him there) and let Baily walk, and either cut Houston or tell him to re-structure. How long is Hill on his rookie contract? Draft an ILB, Safety and OL with the top 3 picks, get mid round OL for depth and maybe a raw corner?
Oh yeah, a new D Coordinator would be nice. It made me cringe when Nance said the Patriots would be "noise proof" because they wouldn't have to make many checks at the line with our defense.
Signing Jones, Hill and Mahomes are top priorities. Getting Berry and Houston to restructure their contracts are next in priority. We would get an extra $1.2 in cap if we cut Houston after June 1 so I wouldn't expect a decision on him until after that point. I would hope Berry would be open to a restructure of his deal.
It was reported that we will extend Mahomes as soon as possible (2020) in an effort to get him signed by the next CBA. Not sure what CBA changes are expected or how it impacts him, but that's the story. Guessing we see a large cap jump, and the thought is paying him now means we can pay him less? Not exactly sure.
Torn about Julian Love. I'd rather have a taller corner to handle a Mike Williams, but he's so fucking good. I think good enough to ignore the lack of height. If they could get him in the 2nd, would absolutely do it.
I’d worry about Ryan-Reid personality clashes and also if Ryan still has the drive after the long time in the studio.
I think the Ryan talk is Rex Ryan trying to talk his way into the job. I'd like for them to take a look at the Ravens current secondary coach. I think he could be a good hire.
Wouldn’t mind Andy having a sit down Chris Hewitt - secondary coach, Baltimore Ravens A seventh-year coach for the Ravens, Hewitt has been the secondary coach for arguably the NFL’s top passing defense in the league for the last two years. Previously serving as their defensive backs coach, Hewitt has helped turn the Ravens secondary into a ball-hawking, stifling group. Running a multitude of coverage shells, Hewitt’s attacking, aggressive style with a secondary group lacking top-end talent has been able to keep offenses on their toes and support a blitz-heavy front. Likely running an aggressive, shifting defense, Hewitt would be a bold hire. Reid would certainly be counting on his ability to install a complex scheme and maximize personnel as a defensive coordinator. If that risk ended up paying off, there is high-end potential for a Hewitt-led stop unit.
It's pretty uninspiring and baffling to change everything when it needed a touching up instead of a gut job, but whatever I guess?
