he has an $18mil buyout and the injuries will be his excuse for this shit show. 2015 will buy him some time too. last year was a let down relative to the talent on the roster

Absolutely massive kid but very, very raw. Some schools are recruiting him as an OL and he'll need to play NT if he stays on defense. NCSU has good connections at Mallard and we may or may not take him, depending on how our class shakes out.

FWIW I would too but not sure he should be a 4 star at this point. It will take a while for him. Can't really teach the size, though.

Not the article linked, but here’s BOL’s update:

Alabama commit Cameron Latu isn’t the only top target of the Tide’s from the state of Utah. The UA staff also covets Penei Sewell, a four-star offensive tackle from Saint George (Utah) Desert Hills.

Sewell and his family made a return trip to Tuscaloosa over the weekend for the Tennessee game, their first time back at the Capstone since June.

“It was wonderful,” Gabriel Sewell, Penei’s father, told BamaOnLine of the official visit. “It was a great trip.”

The Army All-American lineman has already taken three other official visits aside from Alabama (Nevada, Oregon, and Utah), but according to the elder Sewell, this one was a little different.

“The standout moment was the whole game day experience,” Gabriel Sewell said. “We’ve always heard about it, but it surpassed … that was unlike anything we have ever experienced. Pregame, tailgate, inside, outside, halftime, I mean, that was an experience. We live out west, so we’ve experienced Pac-12 football, and it’s great, but SEC was just totally different.”

There’s no question Sewell is a priority target for Alabama’s 2018 recruiting efforts, so it came as no surprise that the four-star lineman and head coach Nick Saban spent time together throughout the weekend.

“One thing I appreciated was while we were at the house, most of those conversations were with Penei himself,” Gabriel Sewell said of the meetings with Saban. “We had small talk, but when it was time to eat it was just Saban, my son, and a few other recruits. For the most part, the conversation was between them. I haven’t really asked my son since we’ve been home of what was said. As far as breakfast, it was something else. It was surreal to be at Saban’s home eating breakfast. Come on now. I know some people that would pay some big money to have that experience.”

The Sewells arrived late Friday night and went straight to their hotel. On Saturday night, however, Sewell tagged along with his player host, freshman quarterback Tua Tagovailoa.

“He hit it off with Tua the last time we were there (too). And Cameron Latu was there,” Gabriel Sewell said.

With Sewell’s schedule, Alabama may have been the last official visit he’ll take. There was talk about potentially seeing UCLA – his first FBS offer – but with Desert Hills playoff run getting set to start, there may not be a feasible time to get out to Los Angeles.

“There’s no exact timetable (for a commitment), I know he just mentioned he hopes to sign this thing in the early signing period so he can just put it to bed and just have fun, be a kid,” Gabriel Sewell said. “At this point it’s still a little overwhelming. I understand the closer you get if you have not made a commitment the heat gets turned up.”

Alabama has led the Crystal Ball for Sewell since the summer, but it’s Oregon that has seemingly gained ground in recent months. Sewell’s father weighed in with what he thinks would be the driving factor for a potential commitment to the Crimson Tide.

“I think it would be because who Alabama is,” Gabriel Sewell said. “The national titles, the amount of people they put into the league at his position, the type of offense that they run. The opportunity to be associated with Alabama, Nick Saban’s name alone, I mean, that’s appealing to anyone. I think if he was to choose Alabama it’s because the work ethic that’s required there is the same type of work ethic to achieve his goals and his dreams. He has goals to play in the league, he has goals to be a high draft pick, he has goals to win a national title. All those things are consistently in line with that of which takes place at Alabama.”

Did the Tide make any movement on Sewell’s leaderboard?

“I’d like to say they have made movement, but we haven’t talked about it,” Gabriel Sewell said. “Did he really enjoy it? Yeah, I know he really enjoyed it. Where Alabama has moved up or down his board, I really couldn’t speculate right now.”

At 6-foot-5, 349 pounds, Sewell is rated the No. 5 offensive tackle and the No. 51 overall player in the country, per the industry-generated 247Sports Composite.

Appreciated. Seems destined for Bama. Oregon can rarely close any OL and going up against Bama for that position group is damn near impossible.
