Polanco is a bit of a smart play today. The sample sizes are small for all of our guys against Mikolas, Cervelli has 6 PA's against him, most everyone else has only 3. Polanco took this guy deep the last time we saw him, but not having Dickerson as a regular fixture in the lineup is inexcusable.

Dickerson is the only qualified MLB hitter that still has more XBH than Ks IIRC.

The only way that you can justify Polanco playing everyday is hoping that he gets on a hot streak and you trade him for something of value. We've reached the point where he's over 2000 career MLB PA's and he hasn't really been what we were hoping for with the bat and he's certainly not a good enough defensive player to look past his hitting.

lol hurdle takes our frazier and brings in Rodriguez as a defensive replacement. Of course we give up the lead, then Sean Rodriguez has to bat while we are down 6-4. Has one of the ugliest strike outs I’ve ever seen. He’s now batting like .175

    Madden is a fag.

    But he's right.

Polanco looks like he may have corrected a problem in his swing. Still, I will rage if this results in Meadows being sent back to Indy.

Hurdle gave an interview the other day and it sure sounded like he knew this would be his last season.

Shit, Meadows is gonna gain super 2 status because he's riding the bench behind fucking Polanco. Hurdle should've been fired by now.

Pretty sure they are gonna send meadows back to Indy. I agree Hurdle sounded like he had a talk, but I think they owe him for 3 or 4 more years guaranteed. While I hope he is gone, the cheap asses will prob keep him.

Sitting home on vacation because wife doesn't have as much vacation time as me, so I thought for the first time in a long time I'd take a hard look at this #Pittsburgh Pirates team and we could get an actual discussion going in here on the direction that they should take coming out of the all-star break.

I decided to break down the players by their starting position. Lets go.

    Catchers
Cervelli and Diaz have been arguably the best combination in baseball this year. Both have really been a pleasant surprise.

However, Cervelli is now dealing with yet another concussion and IIRC this is at least his 3rd or 4th trip to the 7 day DL in the last 2 years.

Should the Pirates decide to sell, I'm sending Cervelli off for something of value. His long term health is going to start to be called into question soon and I think Diaz has, at minimum, the defense to start everyday. The only real issue is who backs him up? Jacob Stallings is pretty much worthless and the only C prospect in our top 30 is Deon Stafford who is 22 but only in his second pro season at WV.

    First Base
Josh Bell has been a bit of a disappointment. I think we all expected a little more than just 5 homers at the AS break from a guy who hit 26 a year ago. The positive here (so far) is that his Ks are down and his BBs are up. That ISO at .130 though. Woof. Defensively he's still a liability but he's made statistical improvements over last year.

    Hanging onto him obviously.

    Second base
J-Hay has pretty much been the J-Hay we've come to know. His inability to seemingly stay healthy hurts, coupled with this being the final year of his contract, I move him out of town the first chance I get. He has options for 19 and 20 for a combined $21.5m - which no team in their right mind will give him. If I'm NH, I agree to pay the two $1m buyouts on that for a prospect of value. Kevin Newman or Kevin Kramer could man 2B the rest of the way with Moroff or Frazier behind one of them.

    Shortstop
Jordy Mercer has been one of the most valuable 8-spot hitters in baseball. This should be his last year in Pittsburgh as the aforementioned Kramer and Newman both have SS time on their resumes I think. Additionally, Jung Ho Kang is stateside again and should be available once he completes his 12-step program. I can see Mercer being moved to a contending team in either league that has a defense liability at SS.

    Third Base
I like what Colin Moran has showed thusfar in his first full season. I'd like to see him get more loft on his swings as I believe he has more power than we've seen. His defense needs a little work, but a welcome change from the Alvarez years is that of all 8 of his errors have been credited as fielding errors. He hasn't been hit with a throwing error yet, and as we all know, throwing errors tend to be much more costly thab fielding errors.

I'd also like to see him get more ABs against lefties, but that's only going to happen if they decide to sell off, because David Freese is still around.

    Outfield
Chris Dickerson has been very good. His ability with the bat makes up for the defense we lose with him in LF instead of Marte. Big steal by Neal Huntington.

Starling Marte is having a nice season and is a huge upgrade defensively in CF over Cutch. With a team friendly contract with options through 2021, I only move him for a haul.

Gregory Polanco has been a fucking trainwreck IMO. He goes off one week, then goes 0 for the next 3 weeks. It's hard to give up on him though because if he ever puts it together it will be a sight to see. I wouldnt be opposed to moving him though for the right price (should he put it together for an extended period of time) for a good value, moving Dickerson to right and Marte back to LF, and calling up Austin Meadows to play CF. I don't like the way they handled Meadows the last 2 weeks. This is a kid they can't afford to alienate.

    Bench
Not going to go too in depth on these guys because none of them are any good.

Moroff and Frazier are the same to me. Middle infielders with no pop. Moroff seems to be a little more sound defensively but isnt as good as Frazier at the plate. Sean Rodriguez is complete garbage and should be waived but because he plays all over he keeps his spot. Jose Osuna is pretty much junk. Luplow hasn't seen much time but he's pretty much a trash bag too.

    Starters
Jameson Taillon has been a disappointment to me. The Ks are there, but he hasn't taken that next step that we needed. Hopefully he can do so in the near future.

Ivan Nova has cut down on his walks a bit from last years pace but is not throwing enough ground ball outs. He is signed through next season at a reasonable price. I'd unload him and eat some salary for a decent prospect if we sell.

Chad Kuhl had made some nice strides before his arm fell off. If the idiot relied on his nice slider (which he was doing in several starts before the injury) and not his horrible fastball, he'd be much better than his line indicates.

Joe Musgrove has been pretty decent. Yesterday he was screwed by Hurdle because he absolutely had no business pitching in the 8th inning. I think he could wind up as a solid #2 or 3 for us before the end of the season.

I'm no Trevor Williams fan but he got off to a great start but as the summer has dragged on, he's gotten progressively worse. 2-4 in his last 7 starts with an ERA well north of 5. I'd pull him from the rotation at this point and try my luck with either Clay Holmes or give the Tyler Glasnow experiment another go.

I'd love to see Nick Kingham stay in the rotation upon Kuhl's return. The upside he has is really good.

    Bullpen
    Tanner Anderson is shit.

Steven Brault has been up and down. He walks far too many batters to be effective.

I can't believe I'm saying this, but Kyle Crick has been outstanding.

Conversely, Michael Feliz has not. The Ks are there, but so are the walks. In short, I don't trust the guy.

Tyler Glasnow is still struggling with walks, but he's throwing lots of grounders when he's not striking guys out. His K/9 is currently at 12.12 in 52 IP.

Dovydas Neveraskus should never be in Pittsburgh again. Lithuania got their token major leaguer out of the deal. Let him rot in Indianapolis.

Richard Rodriguez, like Crick, has been one helluva fireman so far. Definitely a pleasant surprise for a guy we picked off the free agency scrap heap.

Edgar Santana was another non-roster invitee that has been wonderful.

Aside from a 4 game rough patch, Felipe Vazquez has been a monster.

    Coaching
Horrible. Like always. It's cost us at least 2 or 3 games already this year. Just yesterday Joey Cora sent Colin Moran home and he would've been out by a mile if the Brewers catcher doesn't let the ball get away.

If there is a sell off, I'd shit can Hurdle first.

The only guy I keep is Ray Searage.

Agree on cervelli, he has been good this year and I would sell him off. Diaz has shown he is ready to be the guy IMO. I think the knock on him is as a pitch caller, but they can work on that with the increased PT. Yeah, we don’t have another catcher prospect ready to go. Stallings or Lavarnway could be the backup. We’ve had worse backups there.

Agree on 2b. What stinks is it looked like Harrison pulled a hammy on Sunday and who knows what his health is now before the deadline. I’m not a big Newman or Kramer guy, but let’s see what they have.

Mercer I would shop as well, as you said. I don’t think he fetches much, nor will he be near the top of anyone’s board.

I wouldn’t be shocked if they move a Dickerson now, at peak value. But again, I just don’t know that a corner OF I’d a big need for contenders right now. I doubt they move polanco, it will be Dickerson if anyone. Meadows was treated poorly recently but I get it with the 10 day callup rule.

Agree on the starters. I think you have to move Nova. Just let someone else get a spot in the rotation. He isn’t an innings eater (boy do we need those) and doesn’t seem to be a mentor to the young staff. I’d be surprised if Kuhn is back this year. I’d go with Taillon, musgrove, williams, Holmes, and Kingham after the deadline. If someone falters/gets hurt I would give Glasnow another shot. I’d keep Keller at AAA the rest of the season. He was excellent in AA but AAA seems to be enough of a challenge for him right now.

The bullpen is pretty rough right now. I don’t think I would move anyone that is worth anything, but I’m also not seeking anyone out either for this year.

I doubt dealing any of the above will bring much back, but I would just try to get the best prospects they can get. Go youth over guys closest to the bigs.

It shouldn’t be that difficult to still sell off veterans. They just have to say the right things. As long as they don’t throw in something about attendance keeping them from adding or saving money none of the above moves can be considered poor baseball decisions (save for Dickerson, but if you move him to play Meadows it wouldn’t seem like a bad idea).

Fantastic news. S-Rod is fresh off hitting .224 on his rehab stint. Management desperately wants him to show something - anything - so that someone thinks they need a utility player and takes him and his contract off their hands for a used bag of balls. That, or maybe they just want to lose games on purpose. :idk:
