The Athletic ran a story not long after the move that explained how Dortmund was able to pull off the move over the likes of Man U etc. They said that Dortmund had been scouting him for years, back to his days at Molde. It was also stated that Dortmund got pretty close to the wage offer United had, and the fact that Dortmund has a history of playing youngsters + having success is what swayed him. He won't be at BVB forever, but I don't think there's any reason to think he's for sure gone anytime soon.
