We all know Nick Saban’s reputation as a head coach but the leader of the Alabama football program also has an outstanding track record of helping assistants rise to become head coaches around college football. In recent years, Saban has expanded his expertise to another area — reshaping and rehabbing the careers of coaches that have fallen on hard times.
Outside of Butch Jones, who is set to enter Year 3 of being an intern for the Crimson Tide, coaches that come work for Saban have a history of moving on to bigger and better and the latest coach to join Alabama’s staff in order to do the same is former USF, Texas and Louisville head coach Charlie Strong.
Strong’s official addition to the Alabama coaching staff was first reported by Chris Low of ESPN:
“Nobody has had more success bringing in former head coaches than Nick Saban, and he’s tapping back into that market with Charlie Strong, who has agreed to join the Alabama staff as a defensive analyst, sources tell ESPN. Strong had several opportunities to join SEC staffs.”
It’s widely been reported that Dan Mullen wanted to hire Strong on his Florida Gators staff this offseason. In his 10 years as a full-time head coach, Strong has a 74-53 overall record as a head coach. He was 37-15 at Louisville, 16-21 at Texas and 21-16 at USF.
Back to Calhoun I know he was KU's top choice a couple of searches ago but he turned them down...probably a wise decision for him.
#Colorado Buffaloes #Alabama Crimson Tide
We are very excited about this. M
#Colorado Buffaloes feel free to take our Defensive Coordinator. He’s like a younger Kirby Smart.
Top tier coordinators are treating middle tier pac 12 jobs like mountain west jobs these days. CU has done a fuck ton to improve their program over the last several years, only to get turned down by a rehab project oc.
The key is to keep him wasted and his playcalling is genius. Pay close attention to our games and you'll notice his pants are actually lined with boot flasks.
I honestly think Bielema would be an excellent get for Colorado. The only concern I would have is how long does he plan on being there? They really can’t afford to have constant turnover
who the fuck is hiring Bert away
You seem to forget that he was a good coach at Wisconsin prior to falling on his face at Arkansas (literally and figuratively). I could easily see him back in the a Big 10 or at an ACC program.
His time at Arkansas keeps looking better and better though tbh
Not dead yet. Just circling the drain for a little while longer.
Send your Ts and Ps.
consecutive 10-win seasons at UCLA is looking more and more impressive
surprised they're not rolling with Chiaverini
Bert is fine as long as he has quality coaches
we’ve already learned our lesson letting former/current players make a hire. We also now have an AD with a backbone.
I think the biggest concern would be his ability to put a staff together. He's a great mouth piece. Questionable OC. He'd never leave.
I'd take him over Calhoun and Bielema and Mcelwain.
Best case scenario is he stays on, gets a couple more seasons under his belt, probably another chance at OC and then gets a shot.
We are in worst case scenario mode though. I'm on board but his staff would need to be really good.
It’s the right move. Majority of CU fans preferred he stayed with the Chiefs for his future and for CU’s.
h/t to southlick
Saban convinced Tucker to leave and Sark to not take the CU job just to fuck with their program. I love a good conspiracy theory:
Fuck outta here with that shit.
I come here to not read that nonsense.
If it does end up being Bieniemy, I'll be curious how well he recruits. He was an awesome recruiter as a position coach at cu and ucla but did very little as the oc at cu and the players hated him.
Yup. The biggest concern is still his maturity level. Nobody wants to play for that nonsense anymore.
Lmao. Klis deleted the tweet already.
He might die
What's Bill McCartney up to these days?
Seth Littrell has to be really kicking himself for letting North Texas have a stinker of a year after consecutive 9-win seasons in 2017 and 2018
Oh boy that’s a horrendous pick
#Michigan State Spartans #Kansas State Wildcats
9th in the Big XII in yards per play? I'll take it.
All aboard the bend don't break staying intact. Points per game not too bad but curious what scheme he will run with so many established defensive guys across the staff.
Offensive staff leaves a bit to be desired compared to the defense.
Kind of sucks MSU gave him all that money to spend on a staff, and now he has to fill it at a time when he's going to end up overpaying a bunch of people because they're the best he could get in mid/late February.
He gets to keep any of the money he doesn’t spend, so it works out
