Week 12 Power Rankings: Catcher
POSITION POWER RANKINGS D1 Baseball Staff - May 7, 2019
With 12 weeks in the books, we’re more than two-thirds of the way through the 2019 college baseball season, so it’s time to update our preseason Position Power Rankings. For this exercise, we are using the same guiding principle we followed when assembling our preseason All-America teams: If we were building a team to win the 2019 national title, which players would we choose? We use that same philosophy to construct our Position Power Rankings — think of them as an extension of our preseason All-America teams.
Now we have 12 weeks of performance to draw upon, so 2019 statistics have taken on more weight, but we also tried to keep the numbers in context, because some leagues or ballparks are more offensive than others, and the quality of nonconference competition varies widely — so all stat lines are not created equal. In addition to the 2019 numbers, we also considered raw talent, long-term track record from previous seasons and makeup. And for premium defensive positions like catcher and shortstop, defensive statistics and ability were also weighted more heavily. These are NOT pro prospect lists, but they do take pure talent into consideration.
Here’s a look at the top 30 catchers in college baseball after 12 weeks. Check back all week for more positions.

Shit ass conference
Sign me up for this. Redemption for the Hogs against Oregon State in the supers.
Stanford a national seed with an RPI of 22 and a 2-2 record against top 50 RPI opponents is a hate crime. Their two top 50 RPI wins are 1 win against UCLA in a home series they lost and a home win against Fresno State that is literally #50 RPI. If Fresno fell to 51 they'd be 1-2 against the top 50. They don't even deserve a regional. Hell, if you're just determined to give 2 national seeds to west coast teams Oregon State beats them in every metric imaginable.
Here's hoping Cal, Oregon State and Arizona State destroy those posers down the stretch.
east carolina again
This is why Stanford was not in Berts official top 5. They’re going to get deep dicked in their regional
And if anyone knows about getting deep dicked it’s you!
Some fun games tonight
Had a little time so I did a deep dive on RPI/Conference standings and what's left on everyone's schedule. Barring any crazy outliers (North Carolina State, Ole Miss, LSU, Oklahoma State or Baylor would essentially have to win every single game left on the schedule including the conference championship) I think there's only 10 teams that have a shot at being National Seeds. On top of that I think there's 4 teams that are absolute locks unless they just fall apart (which they won't): UCLA, Vanderbilt, Mississippi State, and Louisville. That leaves 4 spots left for 6 teams: Georgia, East Carolina, Georgia Tech, Texas Tech, Oregon State, and Stanford.
Arkansas- As close to a lock as it gets but they play LSU and Texas A&M down the stretch. The only way they fuck it up is if they drop both series (or get swept) and make a quick exit in the SEC tournament.
Georgia is in great position- RPI (5), Q1 wins (16) and conference record (16-8). There's plenty of wins left on the schedule but if they layed an egg against Auburn and/or Alabama and do poorly in the SEC tournament they could be jumped by other teams.
ECU has a great RPI (6) and conference record (16-2) but are 7-6 against Q1 teams. Further they are 1-4 against top 25 RPI teams and only have 1 team left on the schedule (North Carolina) with a top 25 RPI. Probably have to beat North Carolina and win their conference tournament feel safe. Its not that they don't have a really good resume, its more that their conference doesn't have enough good teams.
Georgia Tech has a deceptively good resume. RPI (8) conference record (15-9) and 13 Q1 wins plus they play in a power conference. If they finish well it will be hard to argue against them. If the ACC gets 2 National Seeds they'll be the other one.
Texas Tech has a good RPI (9) and a great Q1 record (15-6). The RPI may drop as ACC and SEC teams get more RPI opportunities in conference tournaments but it may not matter if they win the Big 12. The committee has a history of giving the Big 12 champion with a really good but not great RPI a national seed anyway. I will say if they don't win either the Big 12 regular season championship or tournament all bets are off. The committee likes champions.
Stanford/Oregon State- They're in the same boat. Bad RPIs but one of them is going to likely win the Pac 12 championship. I will say that Oregon State at least has a national seed resume other than their RPI (21) with 12 Q1 wins. Stanford has played a garbage schedule and if they get a national seed its because they won the Pac 12 championship outright and because they are Stanford.
After typing all of this LSU is going to go on a 12 game winning streak and get the #8 National Seed.
What’s the difference between a national seed and like the #13 overall? That you’re guaranteed to host if you make the super regionals?
Correct. 13 seed is paired with the #4 national seed in the supers.
13 seed would host the super if they win their regional and the 4 seed loses theirs.
Futureman LSU has a bunch of injuries and we’re playing them in Baum. We’re going to murder them
look at new money wva baseball learning about how the post season works
New money? We won 2 regional games two years ago
