God I wish. Gotta be top 3 on my all time bucket list.
This is an all time terrible take.
The green literally feeds to that pin placement on 16. If you want to argue the trees/pinestraw weren't an issue for Phil, I'll argue Tiger was in about the best place possible to miss the 16th green. It gets its hype because it was Tiger, just like Phil's is because it was Phil. If asked to hit either shot, give me Tiger's because itd be much easier to pull off.
On the 70th hole of the Masters with a one shot lead?
Considering the amount of hole outs to that particular pin position - whether off the tee or from that exact position Tiger hit from - absolutely.
Tiger’s shot was incredible because of the circumstance it happened. But the more it continues to be replicated, the more the difficulty of it becomes questioned.
Pretty sure Phil had a 1 shot lead too, but yeah. I'll take that chip from that position any day of the week.
Not to mention up against the lip of the second cut.
Perhaps the coolest thing to happen to me was meeting Condoleezza Rice at Augusta on Sunday her first year as a member. Just a right place at the right time thing. Got a Roll Tide from her, too.
I get what you are saying, but Phil had 200 yards into the green. You don’t think that shot could be replicated by plenty of tour players? What happens more often, tour player hits the green from that spot or holes out from where Tiger chipped in from given 50 attempts?
Do they have to do it lefty?
Phil missing the eagle putt after that shot
Most players don’t even attempt Phil’s shot to that front pin at all, which can probably be spun to serve both sides of the argument honestly.
There is no argument. It’s like 10-1
That's true. Most players would feel confident in laying up and still making birdie (like Phil did). I'm just saying it wasn't some crazy hard shot. The trees were really a non factor so it's a 200 yard six iron off pine straw (and a really nice lie). They are both "career" shots due to their surrounding circumstances more than the difficulty of the actual shots themselves. I once hit the 18th green at Bay Hill from 200 yards and a sketchy lie*, so I may be biased.
*I skulled a three iron with a nasty slice and it ran along the ground for about 60 yards before settling 10 feet from the hole. Missed the putt (just like Phil).
So much this...I will never be able to see the replay of that shot without thinking ‘Lol...he missed the putt’.
When does RFJ start posting shit that I like at first and then get annoyed by how look at me it gets?
How many times did it happen before he created the blueprint? As mentioned, on Sunday, the 70th hole, clinging to a one shot lead?
Verne’s call gets almost as much love as Tiger’s shot which adds to the narrative.
Give me Tiger’s shot 100 times out of 100 though because he definitely hit that shot or practiced that putt multiple times and knew exactly what it would do.
Phil had a “it could go anywhere” lie on pine straw where he had to be conscientious of the trees and hit it over the water. He knocked it stiff and missed the 5 footer in typical FIGJAM fashion. He obviously has hit balls out of pine straw in practice but it’s a much less controlled environment/lie. If Phil makes the putt, it would get more love.
Both were on a Sunday. Phil was -5 on that hole all week and he probably felt he needed to Eagle to keep pace with Westwood though we all knew Lee would eventually fold under pressure. A wild Anthony Kim came in 3rd carding a 65 on Sunday that year. Tiger’s shot came while he too was holding a lead so I think that’s a wash. It only mattered after the fact because Tiger couldn’t close out Chris DiMarco finishing bogey-bogey on Nandina and Holly to Par-Par for the latter though he did close him out in the playoff.
Oostie’s albatross on 5 in 2012 has to be one of the greatest shots by a non-winner ever at Augusta. Sarazen won in 1935 from his which was the only other.
I’ll be there Monday practice round unless FSU makes the final 4
Sarazen’s is the best shot in Masters history, IMO.
The albatross was on the par 5 2nd hole
Any amateur videos pulling Bubba's shot off on #10?
Someone said it was on 5? You’d have to hole your tee shot for an albatross on 5
Yeah I mistyped that. Thanks for the check
I completely agree, by the way. That was one of the best shots I’ve ever seen
Speaking of that year, I was pulling so hard for Louis. Bubba is easily one of the most hateable golfers I’ve ever seen
I got chills when that shot dropped. Probably the best shot I've ever seen while I was watching live.
Have the odds for this year's Masters dropped yet? I'm expecting McIlroy to be at the top.
Will be interesting to see what Speith does this year. He's been great here in the past but his game has really fallen apart.
I'll be rooting for Day but I doubt his back is going to hold up enough to make a serious push.
Fully expect Rory to be the favorite, but Speith will almost certainly be a factor here every year
Can’t remember who exactly posts it, but someone always post very detailed stats and odds for each player? It’s skmething like that and a very interesting read that gets posted in here each year
Had a good friend standing nearby and saw it go in. He’s been to multiple Masters as his family has badges. He said it was nuts.
Everything about the shot was perfect. It’s a shame he didn’t win because that shot deserved a lot more love than it gets
I'm going Tuesday and the wife is going Sunday
I had actually managed to forget Reed won this last year until I read this. Hope he misses the cut this year
So does his family.
Put me in on Fleetwood at 25/1
GoodForAnother any luck with the icon?
Bubba Watson’s shot out of the pine straw and trees was more remarkable than the shot from Phil. I hate Bubba and am a Phil guy.
Agree on all points
And the circumstances were greater. This was the 2nd playoff hole on Sunday opposed to the 70th.
I went to a practice round the year after Bubba’s shot. I stood where he hit it from and it makes no sense how he did that
I watched a Sports Science on that shot and it’s insane. He hits a 45yd cut with a 52 degree wedge. I can’t even do that when I shank it.
Bubba turns the ball over so freaking hard. Guy is a freak I wish he wasn’t so unlikeable.
I did this as well. Unreal
Since I am now going to Monday practice round, does anybody have any recommendations for dinner in/around Augusta for Sunday and Monday?
Just downloaded the Masters theme for my alarm clock
