On one hand, yes that’s describing a salary cap. On the other hand, if it was really a 50/50 revenue split, the players would be much better off.

    Nah.

50/50 revenue split with owners who have recently proven that they negotiate in bad faith and completely fail to uphold their end of bargains?

Players got 47% of profits last year. Saying "Hey maybe we can get that up to 50%" doesn't mean "Team A can only spend X amount." He never said anything about limiting what a specific team can spend. He brought up giving the players a bigger slice of the pie. That's it.

    Owners increase salaries.

Again, players can get 50% of revenue without a salary cap. They got 47% without a cap. They can get 50% without a cap. Nothing he said meant cap. You and others are creating something that wasn't there.

And I don't even like Arod.

Oh yeah, the auditing would have to be incredibly scrupulous and independent, but the NBA does it so I don’t think it’s impossible (assuming you can get to an agreement about what’s in and what’s out as countable revenue, which itself is a really long negotiation even when you trust the other side).

It’s your position that Arod’s statement was that the players should just accept more money?

I don’t think the owners and players were fighting over whether players would accept more money.

No he didn’t say cap, but every bit of the rhetoric describe a cap. He referenced the other leagues that have revenue sharing between franchises that coincides w a salary cap.

Maybe he didn’t mean to infer a salary cap, but he did explicitly describe a situation that results in salary caps while pointing to other leagues as examples to aspire to that are cap leagues.

I would hope you can agree w all that and we don’t need to have this Merry go round for 3 pages.

He didn't reference the pay structure in the other leagues. He brought them up to say baseball isn't kind anymore like it was at one time. There's more competition now. That was his point there.

Look, I don't like his statement. I don't like telling the players "Sorry we gotta do this this and this before you get a bigger split." That's bullshit and just a way of putting it off. But players getting a bigger split doesn't automatically mean a salary cap. 47% isn't tied to a cap. 50% wouldn't have to be either.

He talked about splitting revenue. That's a salary cap.

He's bidding on a team right now. I cannot comprehend how somebody believes he would take a "owners should just pay players more" position in the midst of getting approval to become a team owner. Especially especially considering the collusion quote that was literally posted on the last page.

Was there a cap last year at 53/47?

I think there are a fair amount of salary cap systems that would be better for players than the one currently in place. There are other cap systems that would be significantly worse for players than the current model. I don't think there's a chance MLB would ever push for a cap that would be a better system, though, so it's irrelevant.

No, doing arithmetic after a season to determine how much revenue was paid toward salaries is not a cap.

However, agreeing to "split economics evenly" is an agreement to split revenue between players and teams in an even manner. Players are not going to take an uneven share of the revenue thereby capping it.

If you add a whole bunch of words to what he said, you can get to where you're at. That's not what he said though. Not going to derail the thread further though.

You don't have to add many words. You just have to figure out what he meant by an even split. Was he talking about the teams splitting it among themselves? Or was he talking about the owners/players splitting it evenly? The context suggests the latter, and pretty much the only form of that type system is a cap. He didn't explicitly say "salary cap." He may not be smart enough to understand that his system is a salary cap. But that's what it is.

It's possible for owners to increase pay to 50/50 without that being a cap. They did 53/47 without there being a cap. There could be an agreement that 50/50 is the minimum. idk what the owners would want the players to give up to get that but it can be done.

    This is an absolute.

There also needs to be a line of delineation. Cap is independent from revenue sharing. They already share revenue just not the exact model other leagues use.

I’d really love if they fixed the draft-signing bonuses, service time manipulation and then finally arbitration.

Pure guess but I think hockey is ok because they’re treating it like a bubble. I’m sure Toronto/Canada doesn’t want any part of the repeat border crossings. Especially from hotspots like florida

Makes more sense for their schedule, as well. Likely comes down to whether that facility is capable of handling the COVID needs.

Also their single A team is in Lansing, so they could have a quick trip between their taxi squad and Detroit.
