Roster expansion is awesome for things like this but I'm still not a fan of it. It changes the composition of the league too much for the last month. Some teams are rolling out AAA lineups to get a look at the kids and it affects pennant races.

I'm curious how much of this run he's been on is him "blossoming" and how much is the kind of luck we don't really see any more. The ERA/FIP difference is massive.

I think it’s somewhere in the middle. He doesn’t miss bats, but leads the majors in GB/FB by a good margin. Cards have really good IF defense and he gives them lots of routine ground balls.

I think that explains a decent chick of the ERA/FIP disparity

    We lost by one run.

More importantly our best reliever threw 20 pitches in three critical games. He is incredibly dumb.

How does Mike Minor have a 7.7 espn WAR compared to Verlander who destroys him in every statistic? MG2 , come talk to me like a child.

The difference between Fangraphs WAR and Baseball-Reference WAR for pitchers is huge. ESPN uses BR's version, and my understanding is BR uses park factors and team defensive stuff that really pushes Minor ahead of Verlander and everyone else.

I don't agree with it, and honestly don't really don't think either version of WAR for pitchers is particularly good in terms of evaluating them for individual awards at the end of the season. I think WAR is much more useful for position players on a one-year basis because it's an accumulation of what they actually do on the field. For pitchers, both versions attempt to take into account a lot of stuff that has nothing to do with the pitcher. BR usually just rewards the lower ERAs, it seems, and the Minor thing feels like an outlier there.

IMO Verlander is the pretty clear cut AL CY right now. I don't think it's terribly close at the moment, but both WAR metrics would suggest otherwise.

Fangraphs relies heavily on FIP while BR is ERA.

The biggest picture difference here might be that you have Jay Jaffe writing for Fangraphs but Jaws still uses BR. He justifies it by standing by run prevention being the ultimate barometer once you widen a sample to span a whole career.

It's more than just ERA because last year bWAR had Nola significantly higher than deGrom despite an ERA difference of .6 between them for deGrom.

FIP essentially normalizes things like BABIP and LOB%, and then Fangraphs adds the park factors and innings to get WAR. I think BR uses RA9 (not ERA), and then adds team defensive components, park factors and stuff regarding the offensive competition faced for each pitcher to get WAR.

From a pitching standpoint, I think the game has changed so much with HRs and shifting that, as Brian Kenny has called it, we're in a "post-FIP" world where that number isn't as valuable as it was 10 years ago when HR were normal and defenses were mostly straight up. There used to be 5+ Dakota Hudsons a year who just popped up with random seasons like this. Now he's the outlier, and pretty much everyone else is just striking people out and not walking a ton of people nowadays. It's not a useless stat or anything, but I do think it's lost value over time.

The main difference between Alonso and Reynolds in terms of ROY candidacy is Alonso has played 21 more games. I don't think it's unreasonable to think those games matter.

21 games shouldn’t really have an affect. ROYnolds has been way more consistent throughout the season

I saw something on FanGraphs the other day about how Bregman has an extra gear. I didn't get around to reading it but I can only imagine it focuses on the fact he has a .297 average right now after being around .259 on July 31st

his August was insane: .404 AVG, .487 OBP, 1.235 OPS

Springer out with a concussion, hopefully he comes back ASAP because that team is just too good not to enjoy at full strength

that's a pretty huge understatement. He doesn't just have a bonkers average, he's like top 6 in the NL in OBP and top 15 in OPS. Saw something last night that said only Ichiro had a higher average among qualified rookies going back to like 1950 or something wild. It may have been the 1930s, I dunno I just love him and feel so lucky I got to be around those VU baseball teams with Buehler, Yaz, Reynolds, Dansby, Kemp, Fulmer, etc
