Gordon the rare free agent signing that's a disaster for both teams. Probably time for Ainge to pack his bags.

What a monumentally dumb contract. This is one of the worst contracts in the league. Man what the hell is Jordan doing?

Might be time for me to pull the fan version of Kevin Durant and switch my allegiance to the Miami Heat.

I’m no Ainge apologist but I can’t fault him for not envisioning Gordon commanding that contract that quickly. He had like 16 hours to pull something off? Otherwise, unless some team ate a considerable amount of money there really wasn’t much to worry about.

Can someone explain to me why Boston isn't on the phone with Charlotte begging them to do a sign-and-trade here for Zeller? That would give Boston a $15.4M expiring deal as a potential trade piece, as well as a $14M or so trade exception. Charlotte then wouldn't have to stretch Batum.

    That's a win-win, right?

I agree, just saying if you’re ainge and had to put a % on it, I’d certainly bet he had more than 16 hours. They clearly didn’t want him so it was a calculated risk, they got nothing, but there’s still space to make a move as a result.

it could definitely be used better than paying for ages 31-35 of a previously injured non-star level player.

also signing a big long term free agent might not be in the best interest of a young team that just drafted in the top 5.

And they can then flip Batum straight up for Al Horford, making it a triple win

If he could have gotten Turner from Indy but thought he had the leverage to hold out for more, I think you have to blame him.

That said, I don't know what Indiana was offering and maybe this offer was so big Hayward would have chosen that regardless. And, if that's the case, not much Ainge could do other than what I was talking about with a S&T after the fact to get an asset to flip later.

Don't even get me started on all the mistakes Ainge has made since raping the Nets in that trade.

    Nevermind, you got me started
    • Did nearly nothing with the assets he got in that Nets trade
    • His drafting outside of the top five has been largely been awful
    • Lost Kyrie for nothing
    • Lost Horford for nothing
    • Lost Hayward for nothing
    • Had actually too much depth just two years ago, failed to put together any of the assets to consolidate or improve the roster. Now the best bench player is either Robert Williams, Grant Williams, or Nesmith
    • Still have to sign Tatum to an extension, which will very likely put the Celtics over the cap going into 2021-22 with only 7 players under contract.

Boston should probably explore trading Kemba given the roster problem arising next summer. Doesn't make sense to be committing 35+ million to a 30+ year old PG on a team that's not going to be competing.

Brown was. Tatum wasn't, it appears.

THis is what it says on BBall reference for Tatum:
July 9, 2015: Traded by the Sacramento Kings (as a future 2017 1st round draft pick) with Carl Landry, Nik Stauskas, Jason Thompson and a 2019 1st round draft pick (Romeo Langford was later selected) to the Philadelphia 76ers for Artūras Gudaitis, Luka Mitrović and a 2017 1st round draft pick (De'Aaron Fox was later selected). (76ers exercised right to swap picks in 2017 NBA Draft, taking #3 overall pick and sending back #5 overall pick)

June 19, 2017: Traded by the Philadelphia 76ers (as a future 2017 1st round draft pick) with a 2019 1st round draft pick (Romeo Langford was later selected) to the Boston Celtics for a 2017 1st round draft pick (Markelle Fultz was later selected). (Future 1st-Rd pick will either be LAL's 2018 pick if it falls between 2 & 5, or the better of PHI & SAC's 2019 picks, unless it is the #1 pick)

Yeah but they lost him for nothing. The last three notable free agents they have had have all left for nothing. Has to make you wonder if Tatum will be hesitant to sign an extension.

Tatum was part of that Nets trade, the Nets pick won the draft lottery and Ainge traded down with the 76ers to #3 and chose Tatum.

he made a few heists very early in his career as GM and it seems he’s been chasing that high ever since. He’s run his course
