I went up to Canton for Wayne vs McKinley with Braxton vs Steve Miller. His legs were something but he made one play where he got away from trouble then across his body threw it 20-25 yards and dropped it between 2 DBs to a WR and I was in awe
I forgot about Vontaze Burfict. Saw him play in a local All-Star game after his senior year of high school. Late in the game the Riverside County team puts him in as a Wildcat QB. First snap he takes the ball out of the shotgun and speeds to a 65-yard TD, straight sprinting past DBs (who were generally Mountain West guys to D2/JC prospects) that were 60-70 pounds lighter than he was.
Yep. A beast. And also known for trying to take out Matt Barkley’s knees when they were both committed to USC.
Dewey Elliott’s my homer pick. His grades were so bad Urban wouldn’t take him at UF. He got murdered a few years after quitting his prep school team. Wish his highlight tape was still around Spencer Ware was absurdly thick for being a 5’9” QB Kyle Rudolph made an Odell Beckham catch against us in a scrimmage Every Colerain grad sucks except Dominic Goodman and Mister Simpson
04 colerain was the greatest high school football team of all time goose!! Never forget!! Talk about talent!!
pains me to say but I agree. Can’t believe they put up 50 in the division 1 state championship and only attempted 2 passes
Robaire Smith was absolutely unblockable in high school. Against Midland High his senior year he knocked two QBs out of the game. The first was a play where he split a double team, bowled over the running back, and hit the quarterback so hard his helmet flew off. Kid was dumb as a box of rocks but an absolute beast.
You could probably argue that was a turning point into John L Smith's life. Went from a well paying job, optimism, hope to an endless cycle embarrassment, firings, bad investments, out of control debt, bankruptcy, and personal tragedy. I really do feel bad for the guy.
Ben Mauk is the best high school player I've played against. Nate Kmic was up there as well. Ben Mauk won Mr. Football as a senior in 2002 following an OHSAA-record 6,540 yards passing. He threw for another 5,770 yards as a junior, which ranks third and behind another Kenton quarterback in Grant Sherman. Ben Mauk went on to play at Wake Forest and transferred to Cincinnati. Mauk’s 17,364 also is ranked second in the nation by the NFHS. Nate Kmic was a four-year letter winner and one of the team captains in 2008 for Mount Union. A three-time All-OAC and All-American running back, Kmic earned the 2008 Melberger Award as he set an NCAA All-Divisions record with 2,790 yards as he helped Mount Union to its 10th National Championship. Kmic also holds the NCAA All-Divisions record for rushing yards in a career with 8,074 yards.
You probably felt like I did when I had to play Adreian Payne in high school. I'm 6' 4" which was normally fine for center in our league, but whenever we played Jefferson, Payne would embarrass me.
Drew Neitzel torched us (me) for about 30 in the first half at a summer basketball tournament and then left at halftime to go to an Adidas camp. It was stupid how much better he was than everyone else in West MI.
Matty Mauk and Mike Bath are the 2 best HS players I’ve watched. Matty was Ben’s little brother who bombed out of Missouri. I graduated with Bath and played until my sophomore year. He started at Miami (OH) and was the strongest D1 QB his junior or senior year at Miami, dude could bench almost 500 lbs as a QB.
Kenton did all kinds of really dumb shit. They'd kill smaller schools and keep starters in and continue to throw up 60 in the second half. There's also a very good chance a significant amount of their kids were using steroids
How about the time some players set the fake deer in the road and damn near killed someone that was driving? I think 3 or 4 kids from the team were involved and there were all kinds of shenanigans to keep them eligible for games.
Buddy of mine rented his kid an apartment in Kenton his senior year so he could play for Kenton. Kid was a QB for Riverside (Degraff) and played WR for Kenton his senior year. Think he ended up having one of the deer decoy kids live with him for awhile (Dylan Campbell).
Brandon Cornell was their TE (#1)...big mother fucker. DJ Underwood was the Freshman WR that scored on us with 13 seconds lieft to go up 52-49 -even though film showed he dropped the ball.
That was my Sophomore year and had we beat Kenton, we would've cruised to the title. I think they won state that year 42-14 against Licking Valley.
Maurice Hall ran for like 350 and 6 tds while I was on the sidelines. He ran a play towards our sideline and ran into me out of bounds; I was our only player to stop him all night!
Saw woodhead, crouch when I was younger. Played with and against some guys who made it to the nfl but nothing special.
