It's crazy that this is the case and we haven't even completed a full year since they won a national title.
Worst case scenario is this is buy low/sell high for Freeman. Our defense was historically bad this year with young talent. It could very easily be a 1 year plan for him.
This is what was reported by our beat writers when we offered, so everyone thought we had the inside track to land him. But now with a (supposed) $3m offer in hand from LSU, the economics become a major factor.
I was thinking this originally, too, but his entire coaching career has been in Ohio and Indiana. If he goes to LSU and does well, it's not like a B1G school would suddenly wonder if he can succeed in that footprint. If anything, it would enhance his overall appeal to more schools outside the B1G.
They probably put it out there he was going to LSU to get more money from ND and thankfully it worked
Thamel goes on to add that Cincinnati running backs coach Dan Enos has emerged as the leading contender to be Maryland’s next offensive coordinator. Enos spent the 2019 season as the offensive coordinator at Miami before being let go at the end of that season. He and Locksley previously worked together on the offensive staff at Alabama under Nick Saban in 2018. Enos has also served as the offensive play caller at Arkansas under Bret Bielema (2015-17) and just before that was the head coach at Central Michigan, where he went 26-36 from 2010-14.
“Top” is overstating it. He’s not a very good recruiter. Decent coach. Tom Loy is reporting ND is pushing him out with the new DC hire. Take that for whatever it’s worth.
It’s become common to endow head coaching positions and coordinator titles. Shrewd but not exactly original; many professor positions & most department chairs are endowed on the academic side.
Take a look at the Stanford staff directory next time you're bored. Really common among New England private schools as well
You’re not a true blue blood unless some old white dude with Mayflower ties has his surname on your analyst positions
Yeah, he was no more than above average for us. Was apparently a much better recruiter before he got to ND, but certainly didn’t show it during his time with us.
