Gator Nation Football Podcast did a pretty good breakdown of all the rumored names for the UF job and made a pretty compelling case as to why you would take Napier over Stoops (and a lot of other names).
I really would like to know the Gators top 3.
The same way people are enjoying LSU fumbling some of this, Florida better have plans if Napier really is number 1 and ends up going to LSU if they get to him quick enough on their list.
utah getting the inside track on the next SEC expansion
He has the 16th best class right now...at Kentucky. I guess there are pros and cons to both, but the fact that he has more HC experience, P5 experience, and has been pretty successful at building up a program in the SEC makes me believe he's more likely to succeed. Especially at a place where there is no grace period.
Hopefully he goes to LSU and napier goes to UF to test my theory
I would take Napier over B. Stoops but I’d be ok with Stoops if that’s who it is.
i’d still be pretty whelmed if that’s who Florida landed on though.
Confused on how BOB has overtaken Herman as the previously fired coach people want.
BOB the coach was pretty solid. BOB was the NFL GM was a disaster. I think he’s getting the Saban bump more than anything else though.
I don't think what he did at PSU was unimpressive, I just think Herman can actually recruit and has been in the college game so much longer and isn't a George O'Leary disciple.
I read something earlier this week that Herman is happy working in the NFL and isn’t looking to return to college at this time. I wonder if his next move could be as an NFL OC?
Surprised Herman's name doesn't seem to even be getting mentioned this go round. For any jobs.
If I'm SMU I would definitely make that call.
I don’t think Bama fans are thrilled with him or marrone, maybe this is BOB pushing his agents to get his name out there/saban having Sexton do it as neither are happy with the partnership?
I don't know if BOB would be a good coach at LSU or not. I do know that if I was an LSU fan I would hate it because the who the fuck wants to root for Bill O'Brien?
They have been rooting for Les and Ed O, so it’s a low bar
Les and EdO had some quirky charisma about them, though. They were idiots, but when they won they could be your idiots (granted, both had off field skeletons that change some of the context).
O'Brien just seems like an asshole with no people skills.
That makes sense. Honestly he's probably the coach someone like USF needs to hire but don't think he wants to do a complete re-build. SMU would be smart as they have a really good recruiting class he could try to hold onto even if they are being left behind in the AAC.
Could see it but we're hearing it's Lashlee's gig to turn down. I definitely think Texas is going to regret that one
And he’s doing a great job. Cuz their goal is a raise/extension at UK and not for Mark to actually get hired at one of these top-tier openings. Cuz they know his ceiling is a game or two over .500. Just have Kentucky bump up is money instead of being exposed, fired, and hoping to get back in the mix, at best, at the G5 level.
And the UK AD currently reading all this LSU stuff
I think it's a no brainer to stay if he wants to coach for a long time. But if he's like his brother and wants to retire young, he might jump at one of the bigger places. You either get a title or a golden parachute
Has any coach fired from any of the top ~15-20 jobs for poor results the past few decades done anything notable at another big school? I'm drawing a blank, but I'm sure there are a few out there.
I guess Mack Brown is the best example, but I don't think anyone would argue his time had not run its course in Austin.
Unless the cost of living in Kentucky is California level, I'm pretty sure he could retire now.
Certainly not a "big" school but Rich Rod was pretty successful at Arizona considering the expectations there.
Good example, and maybe comparable to Herman as someone who didn't appear to be ready for the spotlight when given his first chance.
Ed O was fired from Ole Miss and won a natty. But yeah not often.
I would be shocked if O’Brien was coaching at Bama next year. He’s going somewhere.
That by choice?
Yeah I don't think it's unexpected to fail or kinda suck at a lower tier job and then succeed at a bigger school with better resources. Chizik did the same between Iowa St and Auburn. Cristobal flamed out at FIU but has a good thing going at Oregon.
I just see a lot of people saying Texas will regret firing Herman and I don't think the track record of coaches fired from jobs like that support expectations of future success. Doesn't it mean it won't happen, but I'd think it's somewhat of a long shot.
Unless he's had a major change of heart about how the college game operates I don't see O'Brien being a good fit for any major college job. He didn't like recruiting. He didn't like dealing with boosters. Seems like a bad combo at a place like LSU or USC.
Mutual parting of ways.
I don’t think Saban has ever “fired” an assistant at Bama. They are just helped to find another position elsewhere. I don’t think that’s even necessary for BOB though, he shouldn’t have any trouble finding a landing spot. Basically, I don’t think we have any interest in keeping him and he doesn’t have any interest in staying anyway.
With his combination of arrogance and abrasiveness, I'm not sure he could manage a college locker room for more than a few years.
yup that’s what I figured was going on here with his name being so aggressively floated
Holliday seems like he would be a really astute hire for Akron. Still seems odd Marshall parted ways with him.
But it's Akron so hiring Petrino is perfectly on-brand for them.
I disagree with this somewhat. I think he'd be a pretty good fit at a place like LSU or USC. Schools that just need a coach who can recruit more talent at QB. Once you manage to bring in a talented QB, the rest of the problems start to solve themselves. Anyone can recruit 4 star WRs at LSU and USC. Not everyone can land top tier QBs and coach them up.
His major beef with recruiting at PSU was having to recruit a school that was under major sanctions located in central Pennsylvania, with a dumbfuck fanbase constantly comparing him to 1986 Joe Paterno. But he (and A-Rob) made true freshman Christian Hackenburg look like a future 1st pick their only year together.
If Akron traditionally recruits south Florida at all then you could do a whole lot worse than Holliday.
I mean if BOB pissed off prod like Brady, Hopkins etc
I can only imagine him recruiting these 5 stars and their parents that want a handout
Spoke with Godfrey on his office hours pod and he said BOB is being heavily pushed for the LSU job. Needless to say, I hate it.
Unless there are allegations of player mistreatment I'm unaware of, Marshall really made a weird move forcing him out
We know you still throb for COB.
still hoping that he comes back to PSU in 4 years after we pay the $50 mill to buy out JF
O’Brien might be a good College HC again if he could go full-on CEO style and just let his assistant bagmen do their thing.
But it just doesn’t seem like he really likes college football to me.
Pretty sure politictians were the key component to that change happening at Marshall.
I think he would be a damn good college coach if his heart was in it. I just don't think he wants to do it.
