Sweet Lou erased all the ill will I had for Hartley for recruiting the two worst kickers to ever step foot on a D1 college in Jeff Fecal matter and Bum Baxa
Does Jim consider his son a terrible coach that he is just nepotisming him at whatever position or is does he think he is such a great coach he can coach any position?
Jay is a really good coach and recruiter. I have no clue if that means he can coach safeties (seems like kind of a dumb move, IMO), and we all joke about it, but he's been legitimately good for most of his run everywhere he's coached. Minter also has a background coaching there, and Jay is also the ST coach (where he's been very good).
For some reason the boards exploded with Hartley talk yesterday. I don’t think it’s actually happening considering Miami insiders have been batting real low this campaign, but it would be a pleasant surprise to bring Da-U-Val back.
I think of all the coaches on our staff not named Kirby, Hartley would be the most shocking to see leave. I am pretty sure he's already done with recruiting through the '24 class. also I am your biggest Cane insider these days
He's from Georgia and has found his way back to Georgia in various capacities every time he's left. Would be shocking. Edit: he does have 4 kids though. Could just being tired of the grind associated with coaching football at this level.
So the carousel is at an end now that Harsin is sticking around, yes? Do we dare close begin preparations for 2022?
Football Scoop not exactly breaking news there. Hasn't it been known for at least 2-3 weeks that Golden is going to ND?
Yeah, we've been hearing Al Golden as the leading candidate for weeks. It was just assumed it would work out after the playoffs.
Hmm. He's done well in just about every position he's held with one major exception. An exception that also struggled before and after him. He's not the HC, but he can coach defense...especially LBs, which he'll be responsible for at ND. I get your opinion. I'd have never wished Charlie Weis on anybody as a long-term answer at head coach. But when he had the right pieces, he was one hell of a play caller. Sometimes assistants are just better in that role. It helps my view of Golden that I've watched closely what He's done with the Bengals young LBs. They went from a question mark to a major reason the team got hot when they did. Hell, the LBs played great last night in the loss.
If you are good with running an archaic defense where the DL's job is to "catch" blocks and not attack the QB. Have fun. He's also a trash recruiter and worse person. Every coach in SFL hated him and every staffer in the UM Athletic Department despised him. Also to say UM struggled after him is pretty silly when Mark Richt was able to come in, take Golden's players, and immediately get much better results.
He ran a different defense at UVA than they ran at Miami. Likewise what he coached LBs in at Penn St. and especially the defense he's been coaching in at Cincy, where he is actually involved with game planning and makes passing down calls. If anything, he's proven to be stylistically versatile and Miami was the blemish. He will 100% be running Marcus Freeman's defense and his scheme versatility and success in developing LBs make him a good fit for that role.
Golden catches a lot of flack from Miami fans, and rightfully so, but I don't see how this is a bad hire for ND as long as he's running Freeman's defense
Um no he ran the same 3-4 scheme at both but it probably won't matter since I imagine Freeman will be in charge of that side of the ball.
Then I read that incorrectly. But he has coached in different schemes as coordinator, HC, or position coach. Yes. He'll run Freeman's scheme, which is is an attacking 3-3-5 at its core, but can be easily adapted to a four man front based on available personnel and opponent. In ND's situation, the DL is deep and they face more power and pro style offenses versus the air raids of the AAC, so they used a lot more four man fronts. My guess is Freeman will be involved in gameplanning, but the DC will make the calls on game days. They will also be responsible for LBs, which is the one thing Golden has done better than anything throughout his career. I get why Miami fans look at his time there and think this is a bad hire, but generally HCs get their shot because they were successful in other roles. Golden is no exception. Not to mention he checks some boxes that fit what ND needs- scheme versatility, LB development, recruiting experience especially with LBs, and a longer resume in different roles in a variety of settings to balance out what is otherwise a young staff.
I'm honestly not sure how hands-on with the defense he was while at Miami. D'Onofrio is/was his best friend and he had full control on that side, which eventually led to all of their undoings.
