He probably isn't bitching when Central and Eastern Time Zone teams face similar disadvantages when playing West Coast teams at night due to differences in circadian rhythms.

Maybe it happens to others, but Ohio State has played a ton of PAC 12 teams over the years and this hasn’t happened to us since 2000. We always get a 12:00 or 3:30 slot Pacific time.

Right, but I said night games. There was a study done within the last 10 years (albeit at the NFL level) that showed West Coast teams had a decided winning percentage when playing Central or Eastern Time Zone teams when the kickoff was at 8 pm and attributed it due to differences in the player's circadian rhythms during those hours (the Eastern and Central TZ players are getting sleepy while the Pacific TZ players are still fresh, i.e. basically the same thing Shaw's being cunty about). With regards to Ohio State I can think of two games on the WC at night...USC '08 & Cal '13 (?)...one went well and one went not so well.

Those two OSU games were 8:00 EST starts. They weren’t 10:00 or later PAC After Dark.

We kicked off at 10:00 EST against Arizona in 2000, but it was also heat related.

We have done trips to USC, UCLA, Cal, and Washington. It’s always been a 3:39 or 8:00 EST start.

Oregon v Ohio State is a matchup of two top ten teams. It shouldn’t be at 12:00 EST and 9:00 AM Pacific.

I hate the Fox Big Noon thing.

Allow me to clarify my point as I didn't articulate it too well. The circadian rhythm advantage that I am specifically referring to would be a late afternoon/early evening Pacific kickoff (so around 5 pm PST, thus 8 pm EST); not an 8 pm PST kickoff. So, the USC game certainly applies to what I am addressing and I believe the Cal game was maybe a 7:30 pm EST start too? If so that applies as well.

Shifting gears, the Pac 12 coaches need to figure out what the hell they want. They routinely bitch about the PAC 12 After Dark start times because they don't think anyone is watching but now Shaw's complaining about a time slot that will certainly draw more viewers but is too early for his liking. I believe for years ND has traveled early to the WC for the SC and Stanford games so the time difference isn't an issue. Shaw can similarly take his dumb team out to Texas a few days early so his players can adjust.

I don't like that we're playing Oregon at noon either.

Ohio State needs to push back on Fox.

Well no shit it doesn't happen to OSU. You aren't going to have a marquee TV game kicking that late. I feel like it has happened to Minnesota a few times relatively recently. And Purdue played at Nevada on a Friday night.

Yeah, I know. I have million things going on a Saturday afternoon in the Fall. I prefer the 8:00 slot to settle in with a few drinks and watch.

I like Fox’s coverage, I just hate the noon time slot for big games.

A four week playoff is a perfect substitute for the bowl system.

We get the 5-12 teams playing each other the week before Christmas.

Winners take on the 1-4 teams coming off byes the week after.

    Semifinal, then final.

    Perfect?

A team from 5-12 who makes it to the final plays a 12-game season followed by a 4-game postseason.

The regular season becomes further devalued.

You've heard all the other stuff about bowls outside the top handful being gutted and academic requirements at that time of year being a joke, and all those things are already true. This just drives another nail in them.

We've gone an awfully long way down a slippery slope in the name of the unquestioned priority to name a champion. And of course, there's the money. Some droplets of which may eventually make it's way to a small handful of the players.

If I could turn the clock back to the days where a meaningful regular season resulted in a bowl game for 40 teams or so, the biggest of which stacked NYD up like a feast, and the rest of which provided a warm weather getaway for players and fans, I'd do it in a heartbeat.

I think 12 sounds great and will not devalue the regular season. Finishing 1-4 means you get a Bye and finishing 5-8 means you get a home game in the first round. Finishing 9-12 means you actually have a chance to win the title. It's perfect.

When the Big Ten started to allow more than one team to accept a bowl invitation in the 1970’s, the counter was it would devalue the regular season.

When the Big Ten adopted a conference basketball tournament in 1998, the counter was devaluing the regular season.

Ohio State’s two national titles in 2002 and 2014 would never had occurred under the old system. We would not have played Miami in 2002 and we were the fourth team in 2014.

The season has never been devalued. We’re still playing top 10 teams nearly every year in nonconference and we still have to win the regular season games.

I can’t think of a single instance where a player sat out a conference game in November under the idea that those games don’t matter.

All those things devalued the regular season.

Dozens of players sat out conference games in November as they decided those games didn’t matter.

I was too lazy to go back further but from 2021-2017, 5 seasons, Ohio State plays/played just one top 10 team out of conference and that resulted in more than a 2 TD loss at home.

Clemson has one top 40 opponent on its schedule this year.

With a 12 team playoff, we would get to see Clemson play in more meaningful games + more teams & more conferences would have access to the playoff games.

I think the proposal was for the first round to be on campus. And given that my team was 5th in 2016 and got no chance to try to win it, I'm all for adding more spots. I certainly understand how Bama fans are not.

I don’t think Bama (or Ohio State or Clemson) fans really care about expansion. If anything, it virtually assures those teams will continue to dominate CFB because none of them are losing 3 games in a regular season any time soon.

True but I would argue it's more likely that they lose a "win or go home" game the more times they need to play. So if they need to win one more game each season to get to the title game, that's a win for me.

Ohio State would have made a 12 team playoff in 17 of the last 19 seasons.

We were 24 at the end of the 2004 regular season and unranked in the 2011 Tat Gate year.

Otherwise, the lowest we have been ranked entering the bowl season is 10 in 2008.

Yes. But having to play one more game, even against a worse opponent, gives you and the other Tier 1 teams one more chance to be upset. That's great for college football as a whole.

I absolutely agree and want the 12 team playoff.

Like I mentioned, our national titles in 2002 and 2014 would never have happened under the system before each. Pre-BCS 2002 OSU plays the Rose Bowl and never gets a shot at No. 1 Miami. Pre-Playoff 2014 OSU was the No. 4 team.

2005 is another great example. The OSU offense did not click until mid-year, and we lost to eventual No.1 Texas and No. 3 Penn State early because of it. Would love to have seen that team in the playoff.

I completely agree with this but sadly it has been decided that the only acceptable post-season format in American sports is a large tournament. I’ve accepted that this battle is lost and will try to enjoy the tournament that everyone else seems to crave (and ultimately probably will to an extent, just different from the sport I fell in love with as a kid).
