Still trying to process. https://www.seattletimes.com/sports...montero-to-astros-for-abraham-toro-joe-smith/
Most people speculating these quotes were from Seager or Marco Gonzalez. As an M’s fan, I bet heavy on the run line for Houston tonight. The emotion of last night and now this today, I’m fully expecting Houston to win easily.
The only way that trade makes sense from a Mariners perspective is if they get something in return that helps their team now Smith is awful and Toro is just a utility guy at best Really makes no fucking sense The least they could have done is trade him for a good prospect
The "don't want to win" thing seems kind of odd in this instance considering they brought back two guys who are going to be on the MLB roster. I get the disappointment because Graveman was having a great year and is clearly popular there, but Seattle has one of the worst offenses in the league and it's at least possible Toro could break out there with consistent ABs and help them this year. And/or that Joe Smith could find something and be decent for 2 months. It's fine to not like the deal, but this isn't some white flag trade where they moved a vet for an A-baller.
To repeat what Charles said every single Astros fan that I’ve talked to today is super excited to have him.
Man, he seems like a great guy. Feel for him to get caught off guard like that but Seattle. Are there other examples of trades like this where the teams are playing each other?
its like when players flip out that some shitty interim coach doesn’t get the permanent job. they’re emotional and have zero idea or insight into personnel moves
It’s not galaxy brained at all, but sure. Players are paid to be good athletes not analyze rosters. Additionally, they are emotionally connected to the guys they go out and compete with every single day.
All I said is that it’s a bad way to analyze a trade. Player reactions have nothing to do with whether a trade is good or bad.
All the fans and writers think it is awful as well. That’s built into their responses. Not hard to put it all together
If the Mariners' line-up wasn't among the worst in the league, they might not have felt like they had to trade their popular closer having a great year for a young bat. We're talking about a team with a -49 run differential that has massive flaws. They traded from their strength to try to address a weakness long term that might help short term. At the very least, it seems reasonable to wait until after the deadline before suggesting they're giving up.
if you think Toro is a young bat who is going to contribute then I can see how the trade is defensible but he’s done very little to show that upside in parts of three years in the majors. I think the fact that they traded him to a division rival really hurts the perception as well. you have to be right on Toro because you have to think they could have got a similar return from a few other teams around the league.
Not to mention they did it the night after an exciting win over the other team Just hilariously bad optics
It’s pretty amazing that the only way the rangers possibly win is if whoever is pitching throws a shutout or Gallo hits a hr
