Big fan of whoever runs PR for Alex Grinch. They've got Feldman and Thamel on the payroll pimping him for these jobs in spite of his defenses getting torched somewhat regularly every year.
i'm a big Dillingham fan but that would be a poor decision IMO on both parts. ASU is devoid of talent and facing sanctions and I think Dilly could get himself something better if he keeps this Oregon offense humming. And I would think ASU would want someone who is less risky than a 32-year old first-time HC with little coordinator success (even if he continues to be good this year) managing sanctions and a likely conference realignment. IMO, ASU needs a coach who is willing to rebuild + work/wait through sanctions. I would think they'd need a veteran coaching coming off a bad stint or two before trying their luck with a first-time HC. i have a hard time seeing them hire away someone else who is established (like Sitake or Smith), too. Someone like O'Brien or Hafley (if he doesn't survive the year) would fit.
i'd argue the new era of coach buyouts means dillingham would be setting his family up with generational wealth even if he flames out spectacularly. ASU's looming sanctions means they probably can't hire a top tier candidate even if they had the cash for it and dillingham would probably be available for $4 million a season. Why not swing for the fences with dillingham? His age and recruiting prowess, along with the totally collapsed expectations from sanctions/herm tenure, would probably buy him a decently long leash with fans. he was already part of an epic reclamation project for the most disorganized p5 team in the country so it wouldn't be his first rodeo with trying to fix something broken. 5 years, 20 million guaranteed to have someone come try to weather the storm. If he works out, great. if not, it's likely nobody would have given the circumstances and at least you got through the dark times on the cheap. Dillingham's financially set for life and probably gets another p5 coordinator job out of it.
I definitely get the argument, but I think going somewhere where you can win (and win immediately) has a better +EV for cash. Who's to say he couldn't get a similar contract from UCLA/Stanford/Colorado/some other school? At worst he's getting the same buyout. But on the upside, he would seemingly have a better chance at winning > more money > future jobs.
He’s from Arizona, got his college coaching career started at ASU and he does a good job recruiting in Arizona. The fact that ASU is in the dumps could mean that he can secure himself a long term contract similar to what O’Brien did when he took the PSU job.
I think he's still too green get it and the others have covered most of it, but he's also been extremely vocal about wanting to a head coach asap. If something of that size offers, he'll be out by COB
Think people are underestimating the ASU job in this thread, especially if you don’t think a guy like Dillingham wouldnt commit murder to take that job.
In what world is OC for Oregon better than HC of ASU. Laughable to suggest he should wait to get a better P5 job when the last OC ended up taking the Akron job. The only downside of Arizona State is that the guy hiring you might be fired.
nobody said this but cool strawman i suggested three other jobs he could be in contention for that are presumably opening up this year. so i guess your argument is, in what world is the CU or UCLA job better than ASU? and i think it's the one we're in.
My point is that he would not be a candidate for the UCLA job. I doubt he even would be for the ASU job. There’s no evidence that the Oregon OC job is a stepping stone for any other major job aside from Oregon HC. Also ASU under sanctions is still better than Stanford or CU.
if asu actually committed serious resources to its football program it would be as good as any job out west aside from usc.
It's hard to place ASU as a job without knowing the near future sanctions the coach will have to deal with. If those didn't exist, ASU seems like a top 3 job in whatever the next iteration of the Pac 10 is. Oregon and Washington are the only jobs I think would have to be ranked ahead of it, and even Washington isn't by that much.
Seems like I’ve heard ASU discussed as a place with untapped potential for like 25 years yet here we are
There is this belief that the right coach can keep Arizona kids home, but neither school has ever made that happen. I have no reason to think that will ever change, barring ASU hiring Coach Prime or something.
The last time either in state school signed a top 10 player in the state was Arizona in 2018. USC, OSU, Oregon, ND, etc just walk in and take the best players every year.
I'm not talking about them like they're a sleeping giant or anything. But even with the likelihood you're not keeping the better Arizona kids there, ASU still has better access to talent than just about everyone else in that conference. In terms of power 5 jobs, ASU seems pretty entrenched in the middle unless sanctions are so bad you have no chance. All things considered, that seems like a pretty solid gig.
I think what you’re saying is correct, but I don’t get the sense there is administration and alumni support to ever be more than a middle of the road P5 job. It’s a springboard job, IMO.
and when you refuse to commit resources to the program that conference rivals in a similar tier(uw and oregon) are
The thing about asu is phoenix is silly easy to get to and from, especially out west. Easy drive from socal and vegas area, and tons of cheap direct flights to and from phoenix to majority of metropolitan areas in the us and the campus is 5 min drive from the phoenix airport. Should be a benefit recruiting wise but it also makes it easier for kids to go out of state.
I went to Scottsdale a few years ago. Place is gross. Why would anyone want to live in the fucking desert?
Tell me you don’t know anything about Florida without telling me you don’t know anything about Florida.
Every time I’ve been on a vacation in Florida the weather fucking sucks. Went to Disney last spring and got fuckin douched with rain every day. Has happened every other time I’ve ever spent a vacation there, as well.
