Right it seems like this is becoming more of the move to make now if you aspire to be a P5 head coach. It will be interesting to see if this becomes the case for other non-power leagues. I think it's probably safe to say CUSA (except maybe for Liberty since it's, unfortunately, so well-resourced) is in the same bucket as the MAC. You can't paint with as broad a brush for the AAC, MWC, and SBC though. There are some bad/dead end jobs in all of those conferences but also some that you can definitely use as a stepping stone.
If Urban Meyer were to coach again, I have always thought it would have to be a traditional power without a real competitor in its recruiting footprint. USC would have been perfect. Not sure UCLA fits the bill.
Did Syracuse need to ask Thamel for his permission before telling Babers he was fired? Seems like they had the order of who to tell first wrong.
I mean he got 8 years without having a winning record and made an incredible amount of $. Not sure what job he couldn't have gotten that would have afforded him that.
It’s crazy how quickly Babers fell from grace. Wasn’t this guy mentioned at one point for the fucking USC job?
Not sure about USC, but yea was mentioned for some big jobs after a 10 win season in 2018. Since then, got a big extension and only 1 winning season, when he went 7-6
I think there's a difference between being one of 20 names Bruce Feldman mentions in a "who could be candidates?" list when a job opens, and who is actually considered on that level. I think he frequently fit the former more than the latter. Especially as he got further away from the one really good year in 2018.
As someone who enjoys when USC loses, I was sad when they hired Riley instead of Campbell or Babers. Seems like its turning out just fine though.
Should clarify- the sources are just my brain thinking it watching his last post-game press conference.
Budget isn't big so hiring assistants is tough and winters are intense in Flagstaff so it can be hard to recruit. But NAU is generally good at most sports (relative to the rest of the Big Sky) and it's way nicer here than most Big Sky towns so I think we should have a decent FCS program all things considered
For a mountain town in an isolated area our food scene is pretty awesome. If the budget was higher we could be a legit FCS program with the quality of life here Should get someone who wants to play with tempo to take advantage of the altitude advantage
