Well that Kliff tweet is fairly creepy. Was the ridiculous amount of women in Scottsdale and Tempe not working anymore?
Yeah I mean why would the rich handsome guy want to go on vacation after working 80 hour weeks since June?
One of my coworkers told me the other day how he made a solo Thailand run over Christmas after stopping off to drop presents off for his kids in London and I was like, next subject.
I mean he’s getting a stupid fat paycheck guaranteed for the next five years, I would come back redder than a stop sign and smelling like I’d been bathing in pina coladas.
If I had his cash I’d never work again. Fuck it live your life without the stressful and time consuming NFL job. my opinion of Kliff went way up today
If Staley gets fired, are there any coaches in CFB or out of work former NFL guys who would turn down that job? I think Kirby would probably turn it down, but it wouldn't shock me if he took it. I can't think of anyone else who isn't retired and 70+. That search would be fascinating to follow.
maybe I'm trying to wish it into existence but if you fire staley, you also need to fire the gm tom telesco. he's been there since 2013, doesn't have a lot of success team-wise, isn't a great drafter (outside of his first round picks), and shouldn't be allowed to hire his fourth head coach. so you either need a coach/gm (disaster) or a new gm to hire their coach (possibly also a disaster as you're getting the last coach)
I'm sure Harbaugh would be interested but I'm not sure if he'd renege on the verbal agreement I've heard he made with Michigan
Payton just makes too much sense but I agree it's the most attractive opening in a long time if it happens
Harbaugh had a verbal agreement with Michigan in December 2020 and waited more than a week to sign it while he called every NFL team with an opening hoping to get a bite. He finally signed it after he realized that wasn't happening. He had a verbal agreement with Michigan in early January last year and waited a month to sign it while his friends leaked a bunch of shit about Michigan and the AD for the offer being bad while he waited out NFL interest and interviewed in Minnesota. He finally signed it in February. Jim possibly agreeing to a deal with Michigan isn't stopping him from possibly leaving for Denver, let alone the Chargers. That job is his dream NFL scenario. Nothing matters with him/Michigan until he signs and announces the deal, because that's been his way of saying he's coming back the last two years.
i think its an easy decision to just fire staley and start from scratch given the candidates out there, but i suspect the chargers will end up taking the half measure and just throw lombardi under the bus
I think Payton really wants to be there and they'll have something unofficially this week. Pure guess.
I guess the thinking would be give up the picks now while Herbert is cheap and I guess I don't see that many holes on the roster when the team is relatively healthy. If I were the Chargers owner, I'd be okay parting with a first this year and a day two pick next year to get a coach that will get the absolute most out of Herbert for the next 5-10 years. Again I'm just speculating but I think anytime you can pair a top 5-8 QB in the league with a great offensive head coach, you should do it.
herbert isn't going to be cheap anymore; next year is year 4 and i think he is eligible for the big extension this offseason. last year was their big year to spend. they gave jc jackson a giant contract + resigned all of their FAs (including Mike Williams at $20m/yr) + traded for Khalil Mack's giant contract + signed some UFAs, particularly on defense. they are already over the cap for 2023 and have a few key players to resign (starting RT, starting LBs, some key DL, etc.). plus they need to completely retool their offense. i'll be able to talk myself into being excited about sean payton but it's not some slam dunk move imo given the roster as a whole, at least IMO.
saints have had to lose a bunch of key guys over the last few years and they're still in cap hell.; it's pretty real. and it makes a lot more sense getting into cap hell with a 35 year old qb in brees than it does with a 25 year old herbert.
spoilered if no one wants to read my drivel on the chargers Spoiler i'm not sure -- i don't think there's an easy fix! my original wish (even assuming they lost tonight, which i expected) was for staley to fire oc joe lombardi and to hire a better/more creative offensive staff. losing in the manner in which they did, though, in blowing the 27-0 lead? it feels like they need to completely clean house, gm and hc on down. i don't know how staley could ever walk into the locker room and lead this particular team again. and then you add to that the week 18 starters play decision? seems impossible. I wouldn't pretend to know who a decent GM candidate is but i'd want someone who can move away from the stars/scrubs strategy of the chargers and focus more on general team depth (like what i think of with the bills). telesco basically never trades down in the draft to collect more picks and it's clear he doesn't really value speed with his measurable restrictions (ie drafted bottom 5% sparq-like rated RBs the last two years, they haven't drafted fast WRs, etc.). i think that's pretty counter to how the best offenses (niners, chiefs, bills, dolphins, etc.) have drafted. for coaching, if it's not Payton or Harbaugh, other coaching candidates would be much the same as everywhere else: i'd be fine going right back to a first-time hc: - Steichen - Philly's OC and would be a first-time HC. but he was the Chargers' OC for Herbert's rookie year so he's familiar with some of the team and maybe that makes his transition somewhat easier - Ryans - 49ers' DC and would similarly be a first-time HC. McDaniels and Saleh have been fine or better. this would be a similar hire to Staley tbh, a defensive hot-shot. would really need a good answer for OC. and then idk how to differentiate between the great DCs/former fired HCs (Frazier in Buffalo, Quinn in Dallas) and the other fresh coordinators (ben johnson, kellen moore, ken dorsey, i guess bieniemy). it's pretty crazy to think that mcdaniels, daboll, and pederson were all hired last year as those are three of the best offensive minds in football. who favorably compares to them?
Read yesterday we can actually clear 100 to 150 million pretty easily if needed. Not sure of all the ins and outs, but we always seem to make it work. Hoping Payton wants to do Dev AZ or LA assuming Staley gets fired. Let those teams shower us with some picks. Gruden went for two 1st and two 2nds. I believe Payton was going to go for maybe one, but after last night who knows. May be a little bidding war between two teams and we may get a couple 1st now. Hoping it happens.
Maybe I’m crazy, but Payton to the Texans May make the most sense if he’s high on Stroud or Young. They have cap space, May offer roster control and he can pick the QB he may be real high on. If they offer roster control I could see Houston being the spot for him.
no one should trust anything those cult members say. they can offer roster control but there is no indication that they’ll actually stick to it
All the Payton conjecture is fun but is there even a question where he ends up if McCarthy loses to this god awful Bucs team tomorrow night?
Jerry Jones has said publicly he’s back next year no matter what happens Monday…. But who really buys that.
i could see bieniemy taking a lateral move if he thinks getting out of reid/mahomes shadow could increase his chances of getting a hc job not sure why that would be in tennessee of all places though
yeah I get why he’d want to do his own thing but not there. that said he likes running the ball so could make sense
I refuse to believe that it'll be Saturday but both Johnson & Gannon would be 1000x better than whomever Ballard and Irsay end up signing
