I have to ask this as someone who roots for Lando: Why does it seem that most posters in this thread are against him? He seems like a decent guy and a very good driver. He doesn't bitch more than the average driver, and certainly less than George. What is the deal? Why does everyone love that he under performs? I think it's fine that Oscar made that lap 1 pass but I think you are full of shit if you don't think that if the same thing happened with other teammates that started 1-2 there wouldn't be a lot of talk. It's reasonable to think that your teammate won't do that when you are the one fighting for the title. What the fuck guys??
Wore my Ferrari hat to the Italian market to pick up some things and some Italian cookies as a celebration Saw a guy in a Ferrari shirt and had a nice little celebratory moment
it's objectively hilarious that lando squanders every pole. i don't think it makes you a "lando hater" (lmao) to laugh at the various ways in which he loses the lead. it's also sort of funny in a FAFO way to watch lando struggle to win right now despite having the best car. he was pretty famously dismissive of lewis for having the best car and "only having to beat 1-2 other drivers" or whatever. turns out it's a lot harder than he thought. i don't think people hate on lando in this thread, though. they laugh at his lap 1 struggles and laugh at mclaren's poor strategies.
Why does Charles get the same hate or worse? People enjoy seeing drivers that are very good mess things up. I know Lando took a lot of heat online when he decided to uses Max catch phrase when he beat him at his home race.
Lando is one of my favorite drivers. I don't like Zack. I've found it enjoyable how they continue to fuck it up for their drivers. I've started thinking of it as Clemsoning
So Oscar should just defer on starts? Perhaps he shouldn't have pulled away from Lando, to cover another potential intra-team undercut, closer to the finish? Lando, like most every F1 driver apart from Lewis, grew up with a silver spoon & has been given every opportunity in life - now you propose that his teammate that's been performing close to his equal & has their own aspirations should as well?
Maybe they just need to get a fucking real team principal instead of that joker. Ferrari has had the same issues since Domenicali left. I mean, you need to pick people who can make strategic decisions under pressure. Horner is a master at this, Toto 2nd pl in the current paddock.
has horner managed two top drivers? he certainly hasnt since max became max and it seems like he intentionally structures his team to have a clear #2 lol this is the kind of thing that will make people actually hate lando. he was slower than his teammate today and yet runs over him in the post-race interview.
The vibes on lando for me are as follows: lovable loser finally got over the hump and has not seemed to handle the newfound pressure all that gracefully since. Plus now that he’s no longer just a lovable loser in a shit car his flaws as a driver are getting significantly more attention. Top it off with having the driver in the same car that is super talented and hanging right with him, which may lead some to believe that he’s a bit of a paper tiger.
Is that really a knock? I mean, that was always the case during the Schumacher years, for Williams in the 90s, and so on. The great teams always did that. I don't think that's bad. I do think in the modern era it's better to be less clearcut, and certainly team orders aren't fun for ratings. I have been surprised Checo didn't rise to the occasion more, but I don't think that's a driver management thing, but probably more of a car development one where they tailored it too closely to Max. You don't have the Schumacher/Brawn/Todt triumverate that was at Ferrari to temper things, specifically Newey is more of a designer/aero guy where Brawn was more broadly technical. So, that car worked for MS and whoever (Barrichelo, etc.) was in the second car. The Williams comparo is harder since that was such a technological era.
I mean, he’s not wrong though. Agree it’s fine that they raced but it’s also reasonable that Lando wouldn’t expect that. Is that a spicy take?
Maybe I’m reading more into it but him saying it isn’t him to ask for them to change positions and that he doesn’t want to win races or championships that way certainly felt directed at Oscar
i'm not passing judgement on whether it's good or bad. i'm saying that the challenge facing mclaren right now is fundamentally different from what horner has faced.
Sure, but look at from his point t of view. Give up a lead to let Oscar win (fair or not) and then Oscar can rip you in the second turn (well done of course), but fuck up a 1-2 finish by doing that. The whole “it takes a whole team to win” sounds like fucking bullshit to me after this race.
Spicy wasn’t a criticism of Lando, not sure I’ve really been critical of him. I completely understand what he’s saying. Kinda was just thinking along what you said but whether Oscar or Lando said it, what’s spicy is teammates saying that about each other.
Finally got around to watching both the qualifying and race tonight. The rest of the season is gonna be fun as hell with the drivers title race between Max and Lando. RB has really f'd up their car. Crazy that it was the slowest overall in the speed trap on Q day. Such a huge change from not that long ago.
Thanks. I guess my annoyance is that after the whole “you need the team to win, Lando”, it’s stupid to say he should have expected that pass. No. You think Hamilton would have expected that from Bottas? Or Verstappen from Perez? Get the fuck out of here. So Lando learned where he stands there. Fine.
Yeah today was the chance to show that, the smart thing would’ve been to at least tell them to swap when it became evident that Oscar wasn’t catching Charles and get him 3 points closer
So that brake rule clarification definitely nuked red bull? And their engine project appears to be a huge folly.
re: Lando hate, it’s because he’s managed to unite Hamilton and Verstappen fans together against him.
Red Bull and Ferrari are now trying to push the FIA on the fact McLaren and Mercedes front wings are flexing too much.
Pretty funny the amount of people that haven't put that together as a factor for the current situation
Lando needs to evolve towards Max and the other greats of not giving a fuck. Max would have DNF'd himself and Perez in that situation before letting Perez pass him. Weber and others behind the scene are taking advantage of Lando's lack of killer instinct to prop up Oscar while the car is a rocketship.
It’s pretty wild that with easily the best car since Miami they’ve only won 3 races. 1 of those wins was benefit of the safety car. And then the other two were where the car was 10+ seconds clear of everyone else. Anytime the race has been competitive they haven’t converted it
Not sure if I agree with this statement. Lando has very clearly outperformed Oscar. Double the number of podiums, 4 poles vs 0, 14-2 in qualifying. My vibes on the situation are that people just love to hate the person at the front. Everyone hated Hamilton and loved Max in 2020/2021. Everyone hated Max in 2022/2023. Now everyone seems to be hating on Lando while pulling for Oscar. If Oscar starts winning consistently, he'll be next on the hate list. It's the F1 circle of life.
It's like Ferrari, people love to talk up Carlos when he is out performing Charles and ignore when more often its not happening. No reason to get upset about it, it's just the nature of things with the sport. Sure people will talk about him fucking up the starts, but since they've gotten the fastest car in Miami Lando has finished no lower than 5th (outside of Austria when Max knocked him out). While he may not be maximizing his points, he is consistently scoring well.
Lando was +42 to Oscar after Miami (the turning point in McLaren’s car performance) and +44 today. For reference here are the other teammates relative performance in that same stretch: LEC/SAI +13 -> +33 (+20) VER/PER +35 -> +160 (+135) HAM/RUS -10 -> +36 (+46)
