Maybe I am completely forgetting someone or forgetting how MLB works but has any baseball player renegotiated mid deal? I know it happens in football but basketball and baseball I don’t recall happening.
it's definitely rare. to be clear, I'm not making this up as something I think is going to happen. it's been pretty widely reported locally since the season ended that this is a strong possibility so that's what I'm going off of.
gotcha and I stand corrected from the Machado one. I guess I am always under the assumption that these long contracts age poorly and teams always want out.
I think it's rare in MLB bc most often it'd be a young player holding out and they wouldn't accrue service time toward hitting FA. It's rare someone signs an extension that pays them less than half their worth so we just don't see many situations that would require it. But I guess it's the same in the NFL, it's a young player wanting a long deal, so idk why you don't see it in MLB.
The Acuna deal looks like highway robbery because the Braves took a huge risk that has worked out in their favor. Will the Diamondbacks get equal levels of finger-wagging for the Corbin Carroll deal?
Why not? When the contract was signed, Acuna had less than a year of service time. Anything could have happened; injury, his first year being a fluke, whatever. It’s baseball, small sample sizes can be misleading. Just because he’s been as incredible as hoped for doesn’t mean it was guaranteed. After his ACL tear and the subsequent subpar 2022 season, what if THAT had become the norm for his production? Would he still be getting fucked over? I’m not saying the Braves aren’t the massive beneficiaries of the deal, they obviously are. I’m just confused why they’re treated like the bad guys for it.
After reading up on the Machado stuff, I didn't realize he had an opt out after this season and the extension was a way to both avoid that and lower his yearly $$ from 2023-26 to help pay the current payroll during that period. So in that sense, it's pretty different from Harper doing the same. And I don't know if Philly/Harper could just rip up this current deal with a different one. I'm guessing you probably can, but I don't know how it works.
The risk/reward on that contract for Atlanta under the circumstances was a no-brainer decision that every team in the league would have jumped at in an instant. As far as "risks" go, you can't get any lower than that contract.
Albies and Acuña willingly took team friendly deals years ago in preparation for us being able to sign Ohtani this year. Ultimate team players.
I wonder if Ohtani would be willing to sign a 2 year 24 million “show me” deal. Guess we’ll find out soon.
Saying that the Braves took even a moderate level of risk on those deals is more baseless than the argument that Michigan's sign stealing provided very little benefit. Like by a longshot. In other words, if you read the entire Stallions thread, and then came to this page - the most outrageous thing you read that day was regarding Albie's/Acuna.
Yeah, it’s not like the Braves were giving those contracts to someone like Evan White #Seattle Mariners
I didn't see mentioned anywhere Albies' noodle arm or Acuña's not great baserunning while discussing their contracts. I can't recall the number of lollipop throws I had to watch over to first from Albies. Acuña's countless baserunning mistakes and lack of hustle running to first on obvious outs is really hurting his value. It is not all in favor of the Braves and the fans.
He wasnt bad at all. Pretty solid. He's really good with the locker room and soft skills stuff. But also adheres to too much of the old timey baseball stuff. A lot of "idc if he struggles against left handers, he's deserves to stay in the lineup" type stuff
Doesn't really matter who the manager is too much with Preller micromanaging everything. This is really the most important thing because we know whoever it ended up being was going to have pretty limited autonomy
White Sox are going to try and dump Cease, Eloy, and Moncada soon for anything they can get Cease will go first
when Moncada is healthy he's a legit 4+ WAR player, he's just never healthy at all Eloy needs a change a scenery, he has no work ethic, he might magically come alive for the 40 HR power everyone thinks he has as he nears a new contract Cease quit last year, that was noticeable to everyone in baseball I think all 3 thrive outside of the White Sox
This is why I think he and the Cards parted ways. He didnt care for the micromanaging and misjudged the pull he had within the organization. Which gives me PTSD about the big argument on our homeboard about Marmol. They all think he's just a yes man. To which I point out that almost every manager is a yes man these days. All of it is run by the GM's office ect. But they wont hear it.
Moncada is such a weird player. And as a Cease fantasy owner last season, I also noticed him quitting.
