This was never really a secret, he was living on borrowed time and wanted to give the city something to enjoy
I wasn't aware. I may have read something about it at some point, idk. I can't name most owners much less tell you their health so that's more of a me thing.
Now that I'm thinking about it, going to test myself on team owners. Yankees - Steinbrenner Braves - Liberty Media Cubs - Rickets Red Sox - Henry 3 O's - Angelos Mets - Cohen White Sox - Reinsdorf I think that's all I know.
Reds - Bob Castellini - knowing him as an owners sucks, his kid said it best “where else you going to go”
Nationals - a guy who doesn’t want to own the team but who can’t sell it until Peter Angelos stops fighting a court order
A good friend of mine got to go to dinner with the Astros owner (Jim Crane) in early April, one of his close friends won a dinner for 5 with Crane at an auction in the spring and one of the things my buddy texted me afterwards was pretty much exactly this. Here's the exact text he sent about it among many in a chain exactly 7 months ago today: “Jim says by the way that the owner of the Padres is super sick, going to die soon, the reason he’s spending so much is he wants a ring before he dies and fuck the future”
His fangraphs page is amazing with his ERAs and xERAs. https://www.fangraphs.com/players/cal-quantrill/19312/stats?position=P
Now the angels get a supplemental draft pick instead of the haul they could have gotten by trading him
Yea saw that video this morning and that was my initial reaction too. I know it's prerecorded and a scheduled upload but you have to pivot when that news breaks.
I like JomBoy so I’m giving him a pass. He produces so much content I can believe it’s something that would just slip his mind. He has never really seemed edgy or disrespectful in anything I’ve watched of his.
Is anyone actually mad or annoyed about it? Or just think it's bad optics? The Padres and their financial situation is one of the bigger stories in the league this off-season and has already been talked about a lot the last few weeks.
ya seems like a silly thing to get outraged about when it is an obvious mistake with bad timing. the public didn't know the owner was sick.
people out there think Jomboy was mean to their teams and want their pound of flesh wherever they can get it.
Yes, just thought it was odd timing (and yeah, i guess the public didn't know the Padres' owner was sick like i did, although i think it was at least known that he had cancer previously). Regardless, I actually like a fair amount of Jomboy's stuff, although i do find it a little weird when they try to sell Astros merch after they were the ones who pushed the Altuve buzzer BS.
Wait, you don't really believe that, do you? I know you're a Yankees fan, but can't tell if you're joking
I think most non-Astros fans believe it to be true. I mean he was super protective of the jersey and ran into a private area to change into the champ tshirt before coming back out for interviews. The rest of the team just changed shirts on the field like normal people. His actions were just sketch af tbh. Not going to argue it. Y'all cheated, doesn't matter how it was relayed.
you know what I'd rather do than continue to engage with Astros fans who want to minimize the 2017 cheating scandal six years later? anything else
Yes, they cheated in 2017, we all admit that and can't do anything about it. But they didn't in 2019 and the MLB's investigation confirmed that and the buzzer theory has been refuted by many, but keep believing that if you'd like. Obviously there's a ton more i could say about that but clearly nothing i type will change your opinion at this point if you still believe that. So wil just move on for the rest of the board's sake ;)
Being on the other side of it now while closely following things at Michigan has been fun and i can totally see why it still bothers folks and try not to bring it up if i can. And that's why the 2022 WS title was such a relief and amazing experience as a lifelong fan.
