Holmes had absolutely nothing tonight. Idk why you leave him in. The whole closer title fucks with managers.
At least he doesn’t have to worry about brain damage considering he never had a functioning one to start with.
I agree that there's too much up and in stuff and not enough emphasis on commanding pitches. I don't know what there is to do about that since it isn't against the rules and is a legitimate way to pitch. Hitters are bad at hitting high and tight so that's what they get pitched.
right but there have also been a ton of broken hands/wrists on HBPs this year and there is no punishment besides a base (which we don't even care about anymore, we only hit dongs) It's reasonable for a hitter to find it frustrating
I think he's getting shit because he has a 77 OPS+ saying that My hot take is that hitting someone in the head should be a zero-tolerance issue. hit a guy above the shoulders and you get ejected.
he can get shit for being a 77 OPS+ saying that but he also is a person who just got hit in the dome with a 95mph fastball
I would be curious to know the data in terms of whether more guys are getting hit now compared to previous eras. I'm sure it's out there somewhere. Obviously, the increased velo means the HBP that occur are more painful and potentially more damaging than before. But it doesn't seem to me like HBP is some sort of epidemic across the sport in terms of frequency.
I don't know what data or reference they were using but Effectively Wild made reference to position player injuries being down this year. Could be the base running changes are working well.
I did think it was funny a few weeks ago when Pedro was doing a MLBN segment on how he would pitch to Judge. He said something along the lines of he would be mindful of not pitching inside because there's an obligation he felt to not injure great players by hitting them. Which is amusing considering Pedro was pretty well known for drilling guys on purpose and there's zero chance he actually believed that when he was pitching.
That's interesting. If I'm reading that stuff correctly, kind of seems like HBP went up at various times with expansion because worse pitchers were being forced into the big leagues at various points, and now it has maybe gone up again with the combination of velo/lack of command + more breaking balls being thrown that sometimes get away from pitchers.
HBP have been on the same level the last seven years. when did players start wearing body armor to the plate?
