What do Michigan fans complain about Ohio State recruiting, other than "they're a lot better at it than us and we wish they weren't"? Michigan fans complain about everyone but us cheating in recruiting because that's what we do. Even when our coach is getting busted for cheating.
Not really sure if 'far better' is accurate, Larry Johnson probably should've retired a year ago already but he has done a pretty solid job of developing DEs/DTs and getting them drafted (if the Damon Wilson recruitment is what we're discussing here).
We had 5 starters from our defense go in the 1st round last year. We'll have another 1 and possible 2 others that will this year. I don't think it will be the majority opinion that OSU is on par with that but I could be mistaken.
Fair point, i was primarily referring to DEs since that's what position i expect Wilson to play in college. LJ has done a great job there, not only with getting the 5 stars drafted (the Bosas, Chase Young etc), but also some not as highly ranked guys.
I think what most of us our saying is that Ohio State is rolling in cash and we wish our administration would use it as ruthlessly as yours. We want to throw money, not that you shouldn’t. For a non-SEC example, we flipped a Washington QB verbal and he point blank told our sites he flipped despite Washington offering him more money. That’s a recruiting success on selling NFL development, but OSU should never be outbid by Washington. For a non-SEC footprint example, we lost Massachusetts OT Okunala and nearly lost New Jersey safety Bonsu to Miami despite being a critical positions of need, both due to a bigger bag.
I think Carnell Tate and Brandon Innis are on record of saying they turned down much more lucrative upfront deals as well. I just want to throw $6 million at two of Alabama's reserve OTs.
I think what UGA fans are forgetting here is how miserable it is to be a OSU fan watching their team go 12-2 every year and only have 2 nattys this century. That does things to people.
I think most NIL stuff from fans and site writers is create your own adventure. You can make it fit any excuse you want because there's no hard facts so it can be whatever you want it to be. Like saying we have to pay a Florida kid a huge sum of money to keep him from going to Ohio when we have every factor in our favor is living in fantasyland. I'm sure we pay and pay well. I also think coaches feed site writers all kinds of bullshit to run PR for them on misses.
The whole sport is create your own adventure, which is why we love it. Polls, bowl games, recruiting, split national championships, Heisman, conference strength, it's all just made up in whatever sort of way to fill the hole in your heart. . NIL is just the latest iteration of that.
The really sad/out of touch boomer type posts have been from some other osu site. Although I think a lot of those people post here.
its incredibly hard to recruit kids from out of state yet alone from the deep south to the north or west to the east- crying NIL is really starting to bother me
Per Kadyn Proctor, Iowa offered him more money than we did. Certain schools can put nearly all of their money towards a single or small handful of players while other schools have to find ways to spread it around. We got smoked by NIL in 2022 but obviously figured something out this year. It’s up to staffs to be creative and sell not only how much money you’ll get by coming here but how much money you’ll make in the future by coming here.
it's interesting to see how certain programs are allocating resources, whether it be from boosters, tv contracts, or whatever. seems to me that B1G programs are using tv money towards some really good coaching upgrades, but not for NIL infrastructure. I'm not sure whether there's a weird elitist outlook on NIL organization and creating a new set up for talent acquisition on that front, but it seems necessary. I don't see who can regulate this stuff in the near future.
the future of NIL is sustainability- sure recruit X got his first check but can your Collective make sure the next check cashes? On top of sustainability is consistency- if your Ruiz pumping tons of money into Miami and they don't improve how long do you keep cutting checks?
Joenel Aguero said the same for us last week. Said other schools offered him more upfront money, but he felt like he would eventually earn more NIL by playing for Georgia and would get a bigger NFL rookie contract. Idk why he'd lie. Also why we bowed out of some silly recruitments like a Samson Okunlola while other schools were trying to get him on an official visit over Thanksgiving. Just dont think you can have a functional locker room if its all NIL NIL NIL and not some modicum of development/competition.
Exactly OSU was the first school to jump to 7 figure NIL on HS kids with Ewers. I'm sure it would have got there but it's weird to see them complain about NIL when they had a hand in buyin price being raised so rapidly to get a seat at the table. nvm if OSU wasn't the one that offered him that money then I apologize to our poor Ohio St friends for the slander.
Not sure if just trolling at this point but the huge NIL deal Ewers had that everyone talked about was from a Texas-based beverage company. He was getting that deal regardless of where he went to school.
thank u for apologizing. Pee-Ewers got his NIL deals from companies in Texas. Though one of our redneck dealerships hooked him up with a truck.
P sure the funding is public record and then you're getting into hiding the money/fraud which most people prob aren't going to want to do. That's why coaches have to court donors
I agree completely. You got smoked on the 2022 class. We got smoked on 2023. What we’re saying is that we hope we respond like Alabama did and acknowledge that this is the game we play now.
Bag helped but also Cristobal is the Hartline of OL recruiters. Y'all didn't stand a chance before the money just like we didn't with Innis
If I were a billionaire, not only would I fund an OSU NIL machine, I would probably throw in with Notre Dame on recruits that OSU couldn’t land but who are considering Michigan or Penn State.
I’ve heard every player we sign gets $20k through our collectives. Doesn’t matter if your Conor Talty or Caleb Downs. No clue where it goes from there, though.
Also I very much think of all schools landing top 5 classes now, UGA is probably the one that is using NIL the least to land kids because they don’t have to
Kids go to UGA and even Bama because they are the NFL factories right now They know if they can get an offer and do everything right there is a 90% chance they go to the league. Any NIL money is just a little dessert to them. Same with OSU and Brian Hartline
