If they’re not going to fix the size of cars they should adopt IndyCar’s practice and qualifying protocols for this weekend. It is designed to give space on the typically smaller, sub 1:00 circuits with 27 cars.
FP1 is full field for 45 minutes then 2 15’s for half the field each. Q1 is split 14/13 and they take the top 6 of each group (Full-split/12/6 is the format). You couldn’t take top 15 overall because of track evolution, but you could take 8 and 7, then maybe even split q2 and take 5/5.
Q1 groups are odd/even based on time charts from fp 2 (I think?).

 

Also evergreen (last weekends safety cars were a prime example)
