Seemed like there was some buzz last night like the Tigers might actually be in the mix for Bregman and that he was close to making a decision, so I've been stupidly checking Twitter way too much all day. I don't even know if I want him.
It’s both. They clearly don’t want to be a tax team this year, which I do get but it’s still frustrating. The reporting earlier this offseason was they would need to offload Bellinger before being in on any of the top pitching free agents, which is why they weren’t involved there.
I don’t see any way this gets done if this is the ask. Shaw is a top 25 prospect and no chance he gets moved. Cam Smith was our first round pick last year and absolutely tore through rookie ball.
The implication would be it would still include both of them as well. I don’t think the cubs are doing that fwiw and I’m guessing there will be some kind of compromise with a package of paredes plus smith plus another decent cubs prospect
If y’all sign him, how long do you think he’ll stick at 3B? Not super familiar with y’all’s roster makeup/farm, and know there’s been talk of moving him to the right side.
I have no clue what is happening there. Just basing it on the significant variance in the reporting on the asking price and was curious.
I think he would probably play 3B. The Tigers have young guys at 2B (Keith) and 3B (Jung). Keith is signed long term and was decent last year. I think he's better at 2B than Jung is at 3B, but they just said at the meetings that they told Keith to work on some stuff at 1B just in case for next year so who knows.
Not both but one sure. Most reports today indicate Houston’s ask is either Paredes or Suzuki and then 1 of those 2 prospects. Parades makes the most sense. His bat playing in Houston half the season is likely worth 1-2 WAR more than in Wrigley because of the Crawford boxes and it gives Shaw an opening to take 3B immediately. Either of those prospects would be a no go for me. Shaw seems destined to be an everyday player for us this year. Smith has the best balance of hit tool and power in our system right now. We’ve got 7 top 100 prospects, there’s others besides those two that seem less vital for our long term plans that I’d rather trade.
I don’t love sending Smith with it but I get it. He’s only at A ball right now so there’s still a ton of projection.
Castellanos is going to end his career with 2000+ hits, probably 300+ HRs and a lifetime .270ish BA and I'm still disappointed in what he turned out to be. He had the talent to be a lot better as an overall hitter and it just never happened on a consistent basis.
Refreshing to see a team focus on throwing nothing but change ups out of the pen instead of chucking 102
I have no faith that happens. I’m sure they will highlight the top draft pick compensation when he walks. As for this season it’s a major step forward.
I’d imagine bellinger will get traded to either NY or Philly this weekend as well. Seeing a bohm for bellinger deal rumor pop up this afternoon
Does this mean Bregman is more or less likely to go back to Houston? Seems like you could read that one either way.
That's one way to see it. The other is that they traded Tucker because they're resigning Bregman and couldn't keep both. Seems like he's probably headed elsewhere, but that seems like a massive gut punch to the fan base to lose both after already losing Cole, Springer and Correa (in their primes) in a market that is not small.
Word is the Cubs already have an agreed on deal with Yankees for Bellinger once this one was completed.
Watching your empire torn down for shitty cubs prospects. Oh well he’s on the beach in Mexico I’d imagine.
Paredes and Bregman have a lot of offensive similarities at this point. It's kind of funny that he might end up replacing Bregman.
Yeah the weather and long corners at wrigley were an absolute nightmare for paredes after the acquisition
It's basically trading from a position of strength (bullpen depth) for options at two areas of need (starter and infield) It also gets them a starting pitcher without adding payroll as I believe they might have TV $ issues like has been reported by other clubs. But usually when you trade away a player like DW you would hope to get more expected long term upside. This is definitely more high floor low ceiling return. A lot is riding on their history of finding elite bullpen arms out of nowhere.
Is there any value in consolidating value into one roster spot? I'm sure it's not $20 million but would it be somewhat of a mitigating factor?
considering replacement players are 0 excess value by definition: no I don't think so. But I don't use their formula there's also something to be said about higher risk when all your value is tied up in one hamstring
