I am generally a believer in the idea that it's dumb to think a team has to hire a completely different style of coach just because the previous one didn't work, but I've read several things suggesting Flores could be the most likely guy for the Jets. That seems crazy given his Miami run combined with Saleh's issues there. Hiring Flores seems like just re-hiring Saleh again and hoping he changed.
So Liam Coen odds went from +900 to -300 for Jacksonville. Vegas must have heard something juicy to make that big of a move.
Think it's a pretty common thought among Bucs fans (myself included) that we'd rather dump Bowles and promote him to head coach.
It’s ridiculous that football media instantly defaults to leader and culture builder speak when it comes to the hiring of a Black HC instead of their X’s and O’s abilities. (then I see the coach mentioned is Locksley goodamit)
As a Lions fan, I love Ben Johnson and think he's a great OC. But it's also been really funny to me that part of the reason he became such a big name so early on is that there is an unspoken belief people have that some sort of genius has to be propping Dan Campbell up because former players (like black guys) are only allowed to be culture setters and leaders unless they were QBs.
My predictions so far... Bears - Todd Monken Jaguars - Liam Coen Jets - Aaron Glenn Patriots - Mike Vrabel Raiders - Ben Johnson Saints - Joe Brady
Panthers firing Brady after a year only for him to haunt them in the division for years to come would be too on the nose
I think Vrabel to NE is basically already locked in. They're not waiting for the Lions' season to be over and risking losing him even if they love Ben Johnson. Johnson and the Raiders is weird but definitely seems to be all over the rumor going around the league. I hope rumors that Johnson brings Ray Agnew from the Lions are true because we could get another pick. I don't think Johnson really wants the Bears job, and Monken might be a better fit, anyway. I think he gets either Chicago or Jacksonville. I am hoping Glenn gets Jacksonville, but he likely lands with the Saints or Jets. Dallas opening would throw a wrench in there because you would have to put McCarthy into one of these jobs. I would guess that would be New Orleans.
I kind of like those fits for each of those teams. Which definitely means it won’t play out this way because owners are stupid.
Ben Johnson would be insanely stupid to decline the Commanders job only to turn around and take the Raiders one.
It's going to be an insanely difficult job with 3 top level Defenses, high end QBs and the worst opposing coach won a NC and has been to the Super Bowl.
Is it tho? We don't know that Tom Brady would be a good GM. As we've seen with Micheal Jordan, just because you were the best doesn't mean you can run a team properly.
They really can't let Brady being the decision maker for the Raiders and still be on TV every week. I get letting it slide if it's one of those bullshit celebrity investments for like 1% of 1%, but if he's actually involved you can't have that.
I think Johnson turned down NFL interest for reasons beyond only money and situation. I think at least part of it was he legitimately wasn't sure he was ready to be a HC. He's 38 and before 2022 his highest ranking position on a staff was either WR coach (Miami in 2018) or TE coach (Detroit in 2020-21).
Kind of shocked they didn't end up going with Byron Leftwich or Pep Hamilton. Really thought they both had a shot with how quickly they interviewed them.
Just based on how their teams have performed poaching people from Cleveland and Chicago doesn’t seem like a great idea.
Honestly that saints job could be worse, they’re going to give a guy time. If they’ll just take their cap medicine and reset
How often does that actually happen? We just saw two teams that fired someone after one year of winning a respectable number of games for their level of talent.
He went 9-8 in his second year and people were mad they didn't fire him after that. You could be right, but if we're saying 2.5 years is "giving a guy time," I'm not sure how anyone can confidently project the next three seasons and think the next guy is likely to win more than the 18 games Allen did in his 2.5 years. That organization is a disaster, and eventually one would think Loomis gets fired for it (which puts the coach in more danger).
I would be curious to see what the reaction would be from media if this Vrabel thing happened with another organization that doesn't have the pedigree of NE/Kraft. Because that "process" makes it pretty clear that Vrabel had this job before they even fired Mayo and the Leftwich/Hamilton thing made the Rooney stuff a joke. I'm guessing the insiders would ignore it still because that's what they do, but I would guess it would make a little more noise if this weren't the Patriots.
that's just the rub of an owner that the league "insiders" tend to always go to bat for, it takes a lot to tug the media in a different direction, especially when you have a happy ending of a former player "coming home" to a place he once played and won titles at
The interest is natural and not surprising at all. The timing of the report isn't ideal, but that's the football world in 2025. I love Marcus and would hate to lose him. I don't think it's happening. But if offered the Harbaugh natty/NFL situation, I think most fans would be willing to see what happens next after the confetti hits the ground.
Brian Kelly would probably be willing to leave LSU for a place where he feels he can win a national championship
Early reports are that Reggie McKenzie is the early favorite for Titans GM. Feels like that will be a hugely disappointing hire so I’m sure that’s what will happen. Only statement the owner has made during all of this has been about the voice of the titans leaving. That instills a lot of confidence in the future of the franchise right there.
