I don't see how the Vikings let Darnold walk with the way he's playing. Given that, how high of a pick could they get if they offered JJ to teams in a draft that sucks at QB? Tennessee (current 2), NYG (3), Cleveland (4), NYJ (6) and LV (8) all could be in the QB market. Are Ward and Sanders really more highly regarded than JJ coming out of preseason? Or do teams just not think this way and it won't happen?
Giants could have picked JJ and didn't, but there also doesn't seem to be a Nabers level guy competing for the pick. It's one less year of team control but even with the missed year of practice he is younger than Ward.
it's one less year of team control and there's also the injury to consider. didn't i read that it didn't heal right originally and he needed a second surgery? think minnesota could still get a 1st round pick for him (or a very early 2nd) but don't think any of the top 5 teams will trade for him.
I think McCarthy is a notch better than anything this draft. I also think this draft sucks so a number 17 pick isn’t what it typically means. I still would be surprised if Darnold started next year. Franchise and trade is most likely situation. I think the feeling is that KOC is the key and thus McCarthy plus two high end starters is better than paying Darnold
Would think their plan is to take a QB at some point, so I don't think it's as much about a Nabers level player available as much as how they evaluated JJ compared to Sanders and Ward. I have no clue what is going on with his injury and that obviously would complicate things if there are problems there. I think it's an interesting conversation because JJ isn't just a year apart from those guys, but he's the complete opposite as far as players based on what we have seen between him, Ward and Sanders.
I think Darnold would have to embarrass himself pretty bad in the playoffs to not end up getting another deal in Minnesota. He's going to finish top 5 in the MVP (deservedly so) and his team is going to win 14 or 15 games with him starting. Those kinds of guys don't get let out of the building in favor of a guy with zero experience.
Darnold has absolutely earned the spot in Minnesota. Crazy talk to suggest they'd move on to anyone else. He's been fantastic this year.
JJ would be the top QB in this draft. I think Vegas at 8 could be a legit possibility if they are desperate enough. Especially if they see both Sanders and Ward go off the board early.
I agree with this… I think you trade Darnold and give JJ the job next year. Take the draft capital you get to improve the roster around him.
I'm not sure Darnold necessarily brings back more in a trade than McCarthy would. With Darnold he would have to agree to go somewhere and that team would have to pay him $50M+ per. That's not the easiest of sells if you're a terrible team. And a terrible team might prefer the 22 year old over the 28 year old.
Vikings are a franchise and ownership that spent 6ish years overpaying a QB and thus not able to fill other spots and weaknesses. Darnold is better than any year of Cousins, but the entire franchise is thirsting for an opportunity to have a rookie QB deal. any other team I’d say Darnold is a strong to lean to stay
I dunno their cap situation but franchise and keep jj if you can. Find out what you have and trade one next season. Packers and Chiefs approach works .02
You don’t waste a first on JJ just because Sanders and Ward aren’t worth a pick in the top two rounds. None of those teams are a QB away from being contenders, keep building.
Daniel jones was an insanely dumb decision from the start that the giants double and tripled down on. What did you expect?
If you’re a team that needs a QB, do you say fuck it and wait till next draft? I wouldn’t trust any of those guys to run my team.
I would say that teams should spend this offseason trying to find the next Mayfield/Goff/Darnold, but I'm not sure who that even would be around the league now. Justin Fields, Danny Dimes, Trey Lance and Mac Jones? Sam Howell? Yuck all around.
Him and Dimes are clearly ahead of the others based on performance to date. I was just throwing out names and bunched them all together.
I really hope the Steelers hit him with the franchise tag if they can’t work out a longterm deal. Too bad the rest of their offense is ass.
Supposedly the Vikings will take offers on McCarthy since they’re happy to stick with Darnold and only have three picks in the 2025 draft (a first and two fifth-round picks). If I’m a team looking for a young QB, I’d rather have McCarthy than any of the guys in this draft. And there’s a decent chance they can keep their first-round pick and still work out a package for McCarthy.
For 1 year, yes. There is no one else and I’d rather pay 40 to Fields for 1 year than 30/year to Wilson for 3 years.
Teams have the angle that he’s already had two knee surgeries before he’s even had his first NFL start. But yeah, I’m sure that’ll be the starting price.
