There is absolutely no way the Vikings part ways with their top 10 pick at QB after one year for anything other than a 1st plus a lot of change. He will be on the Vikings next year barring a wild trade offer.
Wanting to give fields 40 million when the Steelers sat him the entire second half the season in favor of Wilson is an absolutely insane take.
Dude is coming off a year long injury and has no NFL tape. Unless that 1st you want is 25+ no shot the Vikings get a 1st and change. His value has not gone up in a year.
He’d be the 1st qb taken in this draft so relative to draft picks, his value has gone up. Browns, Titans, Giants would all trade at least their top 5 pick for him imo
we wouldn’t. we passed on him at 6 last year so don’t thinkn we would trade top 5 for him this year. schoen is getting another year it seems so doubt his evaluation of mccarthy has changed
i think he stinks but would rather roll the dice on him and trade a 2nd or something than top 5 on the 2 chucklefucks this class
Wild take considering he is most known for handing the ball off in college and was drafted based on tools rather than actual production.
Titans also passed on him in last years draft. I doubt they would trade away another top 10 pick for him when then didn’t want him last year at 7.
I doubt his value has gone up, but "JJ would be the first QB taken in this draft" is not a wild take.
Not wrong, but there is a lot of evidence of NFL teams spending high draft capital on tools over production. I'm not saying it always works. In fact it often doesn't. But they seem to have a bit of an addiction to it.
Take out the injury and the missed year of development and we can have that convo, but imo you are greatly undervaluing those two variables. And no this isn’t a cam ward discussion. He’s got a lot of gunslinger to remove from his game if he has any chance of being a successful NFL QB again. See injury and missed year of development. It’s a different convo if McCarthy was healthy and in the draft for the first time
The injury is potentially worrisome. I don't think the "missed year of development" is real. He played and got coached up by a really good QB coach in OTAs and training camp. He missed the season but was around the team and in the room all year. I'm not sure how that is detrimental or negative for him in the long run. This QB class sucks. You can disagree with thinking JJ would still go higher than anyone else in this class, but it's far from a wild opinion. It might not even be a minority opinion.
For all the injury arguments, you can counter with him spending the last year in arguably the best qb developmental environment. Even the 2026 draft class is pretty barren at the moment, which doesn’t hurt either. moot point because he won’t be traded, and it would never be for less than first round value. The team is in a Super Bowl window, and having a high end potential option at a cheap price keeps it from going completely shut next year if darnold is retained and injured
I still can't wrap my head around the JJ McCarthy stuff and TBQH I've never been able to even during last year's draft, and I don't see much of a difference between him, Sanders or Ward. As someone who isn't some kind of QB guru myself, could someone help me understand why folks really think McCarthy is like head and shoulders above those two?
If they want a young guy at QB to train up that would be our best path forward. If Mcdaniel thinks he's worth it I'd trust Mcdaniel despite me not being a big McCarthy guy. Although do we really want another injury prone QB considering our current situation? We desperately fucking need Oline though and we need to spend as much draft and FA capital available to upgrade the interior line and potentially tackle depending on how the team feels about the guy they drafted to replace Armstead One of the biggest reasons our offense struggles without Tua and in big games against good teams is because the fucking Oline sucks. Mina Kimes was literally saying this on Thursday on her podcast. Our roster was poorly built and needs to be revamped We need a new GM too before the draft and Free Agency
My thing is...Tua is a good QB when he's on the field, but I've come to realize that it's just not realistic to expect to ever count on Tua being healthy. So I'm good with starting the process of rolling the dice on other guys. I think if we can turn the #15 or whatever pick into a guy that was a top 10 pick last year, that's a good chance to take.
They're very different prospects coming out. What McCarthy proved capable of doing is the kind of stuff NFL QBs do, but ran an offense that wasn't built around the passing game so people don't know what that would look like. What Ward and Sanders have done is what really good college QBs do, but a lot of that often doesn't translate (Ward with the improvising, Sanders with taking a million sacks and having no pocket presence). Of the three players, I think McCarthy is more likely to succeed than the others just based on the history of those QB archetypes. But one could certainly argue for Ward and/or Sanders based on what they've done, too.
Well considering how great he was this year with the line we had I honestly would look some where else
That's why I said low cost. We desperately need to sink money and resources into our Oline. Drafting Chop worked out but we still needed help on the Oline more than we did the Dline. Bringing in ANY other non elite QB to play behind that line is a waste of time if we don't fix that massive issue.
And Armstead is likely retiring plus always hurt anyway so that's yet another hole to fill. Jackson is a decent starting RT and Brewer has been good at C, but LG, RG, LT are huge questions going into next year.
This is why they should look to move Darnold while his stock has never been higher, and “roll the dice” on McCarthy knowing he’s got a tremendous coach/supporting cast around him.
That's great if it works out, but I think it's a bit dismissive of what Darnold is doing to just assume anyone can step right in no problem. I'm not saying KOC isn't great or the situation isn't QB friendly. But ultimately Darnold is playing well and that's not a given.
I’m not a jj fan and I thought going into the draft he had really high bust potential but.. I don’t think a meniscus tear with a year of rehab for a qb downgrades his potential. He’s also the same age as Sanders and Ward with the aforementioned year of nfl pro experience in a great org that turned Darnold into a pro bowler. I didn’t think he’d get traded a week ago but browns, titans, giants, panthers, jets and raiders all need a franchise qb and have top 10 picks. Could see a gm trading a 1st+ to get JJ out of necessity, even if he’d be the 3rd qb off the board at that spot.
As a backup right? Because he’s fucking trash. I’ll take tua’s concussions and hip over that nonsense all day.
Jets trade 2 firsts for both. Aaron Rodgers tries to Google Kevin O'Connell, but gets results for Kevin O'Connor and sees he likes Elon Musk. Signs for vet min for 1 more season until McCarthy is ready.
Sean Payton also has more Super Bowl wins than O'Connell has playoff wins up to this point, but Payton and a 3rd went for a 1 and a 2.
No way, just keep your pick and build your roster. Just because McCarthy might be better than Ward/Dart/Sanders/etc doesn’t mean he’s worth a top 5 pick.
You realize that he’s not just sitting at home for a year locked in his basement. He’s getting developed by the coaches, just mentally, not physically. The mental part of the game for NFL QBs is huge which I’m sure you’re aware.
After thinking it over I’m firmly on team Fields to Mia. Was the most accurate deep ball passer in NCAA history, Hill/Waddle won’t outrun his arm. McDaniel using his size and 4.45 to scheme up some crazy mad scientist shit would be a lot of fun.
In 2023, Tua got rid of the ball faster than any QB in the league (2.36 seconds per attempt). Fields got rid of the ball the slowest of any QB in the league (3.23 seconds per attempt). That's the opposite of a seamless transition for QB, coach and scheme.
That was always the knock on Fields, even at Ohio State. He held the ball and took unnecessary sacks.
