Tonight was the best game JJ McCarthy never played. One more of those and he's the starting QB for the Vikings next year no questions asked.
JJ McCarthy is not that guy, lol. Overdrafted by a lot...but so were most of the first round QBs last year.
What I think it’s safe to say all the first round QBs have looked like first round QBs but probably not in the order they were drafted. Only one who hasn’t shown enough is Penix, and of course JJ
“Oooh yeaahhhhh” ^because he clicks “did you mean Kevin Connolly” and assumes E from Entourage is his new coach.
Ehh. Dude had quite a few meltdowns of his own the past few years. In a draft of no sure things at QB, go big or go home and that's Ward/Sanders. Though I'd be trading down as fast as possible if someone wanted to be the guy to take the first swing and potentially be wrong.
Getting way ahead of ourselves but who are QBs to watch for '26 if a team is going to punt on this QB class? Is this class bad enough to wait/'26 promising enough? Obviously Arch is the headliner, but he's still mostly theoretical.
Arch is gonna be in the 2027 draft. They have had a plan for him from the start at Texas. He’s not going to be a one and done starter.
This is always such a difficult thing to predict. Unless there's a Caleb Williams, Luck, Lawrence, it's a complete crap shoot on QBs this early. Feels like 75% of the time the way too early mocks put QBs into the first round that end up drafted on day 3.
Absolutely not. But I never thought Anthony Richardson or Bo Nix would be. Obviously one shouldn’t have been.
AR was a mistake everyone could see coming. Rocket arm, fast as shit, all the measurables, etc. A dumb org was gonna think they could fix all the other stuff and turn him into Josh Allen 2.0 Nico is a guy living off his NIL hype. He's beyond mid production wise and his physical gifts come nowhere close to Richardson.
Allar, Klubnik, Nussmeier are the big and obvious names in terms of established guys who are returning to school and will be in the draft next year. Sellers is a big talent. Then there's former 5*s who'll be draft-eligible in Arch, Nico, Dante Moore.
Seemingly without that guy coming next year I feel like you just gotta keep taking bites at the apple even if you're not incredibly hype about this current QB class if you're a QB needy team.
Its pretty easy to evaluate whether Nico can consistenly hit a slant, slot fade, or deep post. He can't.
I agree that you keep taking shots, but top 5 picks are too insanely valuable to over draft a QB with one. If you don't have conviction, trade down pick up a ton of picks and figure it out next year. With that said, it's way too early to punt on next year's draft. Some transfer will have a big year and put himself into the convo for a top 5 pick.
I was going to mention Dante as a dark horse because he'd have a long way to go following his last notable playing time. But based on the play of their last two QBs and the fact that his upside should be higher, I don't think it's out of the question that he plays himself into a top pick.
I feel like Cam Ward is the only person to do this since Cam Newton. All the other transfers that were drafted high were with their teams for 2 years before entering the draft.
We run an offense based on timing and playing within structure. When has Fields at any point in his career shown he can do that at a high level?
I personally saw him choose to run out of bounds with zero time on the clock rather than throw it to the end zone with a chance to win the game
If you're drafting in the top 5 and you don't think a QB is worth taking there, chances are very high that no one else does, either, and you're not going to get a ton of picks to trade down. We have years of evidence of this when it comes to the draft.
IMO recent history says that somebody always falls in love and overpays/overdrafts to make sure they get their guy.
When you have a chance to steal a QB like Will Howard in a draft, you have to seize that opportunity.
QB evaluation is one of the hardest things in sports to get right but I'll say this about Ward, his ability to see a defense, make the right read and get the ball out in under 2.5 seconds consistently is something QB coaches around the league are going to get excited about on when they dive into the tape. It's the most impressive part of his game by far. That should translate. Improv stuff I think is a bit overblown in that he won't have 8 second pockets in the NFL like he did this last yr. which is when he would get into trouble
1. Tennessee - should take QB 2. Browns - should trade back or bpa 3. Giants - should take QB 4. Pats - should take Hunter if available, if not trade back if possible, 5. Jags - bpa 6. Raiders - qb3 here seems foolish. Try to get creative in off-season. Is there an established QB you can get that doesn't seem available? 7. Jets - bpa 8. Panthers - McMillan 9. Saints - probably take an iol or something dumb like that 10. Bears - should take edge
Love to see people already talking themselves into mediocre qbs in this draft. A tradition unlike any other.
OL is not strong in that range and edge is just as much of a need. They have two 2nd round picks. If it's OL no matter what they should trade back.
Before last night I was certain one of the QB teams would be dropping a Darnold bag. He's still got the playoffs to recoup that hype.
There’s still a balance between need and value. Taking any of these QBs at one or three overall would be criminal for a GM, and it still wouldn’t be justifiable based on how desperate they are to get a QB. It would make more sense to trade back. Or take their BPA and then try to trade back up into the back end of the first-round from their position at the top of the second-round. We’ve seen that happen plenty of times. But if it was based on evaluations and the league doesn’t view these kids like the media, then the Titans and Giants could still get their QBs with their second-round picks.
Bo Nix was supposed to be a mediocre QB, and now he's probably offensive rookie of the year. I also see people haven't learned from making these grand statements. No different than folks throwing in the towel on Bryce Young and dude came back with vengeance. There's a great post from I think one of the former QB's that played in the NFL and work for ESPN now about how making determinations about QB's in like year 1 or 2 is pointless and how those things almost never pan out people think they will. Most folks here would've called Drew Brees a bum and said they didn't want him on their team after he left the chargers back in the day. We called Darnold a bum, we called Mayfield a bum, we called Gino a bum, we called Josh Allen a bum etc At some point we have to realize, some guys just take longer than others to achieve their potential.
Daniels has OROY locked up, but I get Cane's general point. Nix is the type of draft pick that so rarely works out and he has looked pretty good in his first season.
