I'm old and went to college in St. Louis. Uncle Tupelo has a great song called 'New Madrid' seemingly inspired by a guy called Iben Browning who predicted an impending massive earthquake on the New Madrid in 1990. That story made a lot of news back then and highlighted the potential ticking time bomb of New Madrid. That said, I can't say I really blame St. Louis, Memphis, etc. for not focusing too much on earthquake resistant construction.

Maybe I'm ignorant of S. Turkey construction standards, but I'd guess they're lower than US standards.

Earthquakes are not for political gain. They're a natural disaster.

They may not be down under, but they are in most other countries in the world… especially the US

    LOL, ok.

I'm seeing footage of brand new buildings collapsing, and Turkey has had earthquake building standards for many decades. If the political party in power was corruptly taking bribes or allowing cronies to construct buildings without earthquake safeguards, then, in a functioning democracy, that party would be in significant peril. I say in a functioning democracy, because, Erdogan will definitely try to cheat to remain in power no matter what.

I think, especially people on this board, understand they are much stronger. I don’t think the average person has any idea how to quantify it though.

For instance, I lived 10 years in Oregon and simply put, a lot more money needs to go into retrofitting about everything in Portland metro.

It’s kind of seen as a ‘well it’s not happened, and how strong can it really be?!?’

Well, Japan has done pretty well for itself in terms of structural damage because of all the money they have put into stuff (and even then, the sea walls couldn’t stop the tsunami which has led to even greater emphasis on it).

USA has a ticking time bomb in the PNW that’s similar to the avoidance of New Orleans but on a potential scale that would make Katrina seem like small beans.

As I was reading this I was thinking of Katrina.

The US will just let a disaster happen then fund it later.

natural disasters are very much political in nature. A governments response before and after a natural disaster is one of the most important factors in government.

The 2019 Australian bushfires would have 100% had some kind of political sway, even if it’s not to the level of other countries, like the United States, that have a lot more potential natural disasters than Australia.

You either got kicked too many times by a kangaroo or you have little to zero understanding on how politics works anywhere.

that footage of the nursing home residents lying dazed in the snow without any socks or shoes on is heartbreaking.

The cold from this winter storm is going to kill as many people as the earthquake.

slightly different circumstances, an attack on the homeland is an incumbent's wet dream (we'd have let FDR be president forever). look how Trump handled the pandemic, it was a major contributing factor to his loss. Turkey is suffering, Erdogan saying some dumb shit or making too obvious of a move to twist this to his favor could be very bad for him.

planned on making a kit, started on it while out there, but never finished it all.

had plans in place to harvest rain water for both that reason and the garden but never got around to it. Like the government in that regard!

Lord knows I have plenty of contenders myself, but this blows the mind. It’s probably some troll, but it’s an annoying troll.

The tallest building in Taiwan, Taipei 101( and one of the tallest in world at over 1,660 feet and tallest in the world for 5 years) has a giant counterweight ball at the top that is for the built into the building thanks to the powerful, frequent cyclones and earthquakes the island gets on a regular basis.

If a building that tall can take into context the as violent of extremes as you can get on planet earth on a normal basis…

I’m going to go out on a limb and say the regulations in Turkey were weak or more than likely ignored with some wink/wink bullshit.

Once again, just bullshit for the average family and many dead.

I won’t even get into the trainwreck that is Syria.

edit: it’s pretty damn cool, it’s literally a giant swinging ball attached at the top.

this isn't even remotely surprising. some people love to complain but like, the insane safety regulations in place in the West in a variety of areas keeps shit like this from happening and causing so much loss. other places in the world just don't follow the same path and for everyday people the results can be catastrophic. same deal with airplanes, for example. the regulations put into place in various countries make it an incredibly safe mode of travel and there are other countries which lack it and the airlines coming out of those countries are simply much more dangerous to use.

my hope would be as Turkey rebuilds that they affect a much more serious attitude towards safety standards in buildings.

Past 11,000 dead today. Not sure how to handicap the total from that with thousands of collapsed buildings.

Much of the building damage looks a lot like what we saw after Haiti but with a greater population in the affected regions.

The Haitian quake killed between 100,000 to 300,000 people (the Haitian government was accused of inflating the 300k number for political reasons, we might see the opposite in Turkey - the Erdogan regime trying to suppress the actual total); I'm afraid a death toll number that stays under 75,000 dead is wildly optimistic.

100%, but there's myriad other factors that play a role too. Earthquake depth, geology, geography, general bedrock type (granite vs. metamorphic, for example), soil type(s), average depth to water table / bedrock, how much precipitation an area has received prior to the quake, etc.

Meaning, build the safest building you can think of with base isolation and counterweights and such, but if you're building over 100 meters of alluvial deposits it's not going to end well with a magnitude 8 earthquake.

As a structural engineer, I’ll just add that seismic design has really evolved in the last 40 years. It’s possible many of the buildings were built even before the knowledge and techniques we have with current modern standards. Also possible economics and poor regulations are in play as well.

Will be happy to get into more later.
