Saw 30 Seconds to Mars, Taproot and Chevelle at House of Blues Myrtle Beach. We were there for Chevelle but Taproot stole the show. Lead singer jumped into the crowd from a second story balcony
In my head cannon, the space between grunge and rap metal/butt rock was dominated by, for lack of a better term, "adult rock." Goo Goo Dolls, Collective Soul, Lenny Kravitz, Gin Blossoms, Live, Barenaked Ladies, Sugar Ray, etc.
Stone Temple Pilots was pretty slept on. -me when I happen on stuff that wasn't on their first two albums
Epitome of the Downward Spiral. A Warm Place blending into prickly background synth lines clashing with cascading When the Leeve Breaks esque drums leading into relentless, distorting guitars.
Been listening to a lot of Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness lately. Aside from the singles, that album has sooo many great songs. Jellybelly Here is No Why To Forgive Ode To No One Muzzle Where Boys Fear to Tread Bodies XYU All bangers.
When it gets to the “I am made of shamrocks” part of XYU It’s like whoa I didn’t know SP could be that heavy
My middle school/high school garage band played XYU a couple times (not well!), and our neighborhood friends didn't know what to make of that song. Caught everybody off guard with how schizophrenic that song gets.
“And in the eyes of a jackal I say kaboom!” Yeah that song is all over the place. Man “Bodies” is such a jam. I’m sitting here singing it in my head now. “Love is suicide…”
So perfectly paced in retrospect for a double album. The first few songs are enough to draw you in and hold you for a while. You think you’ve found all the bangers but you keep creeping further into disc 1. You start crossing into disc 2 and you’re like damn, still going, but the second half is weird at first. Screaming to super chilled out to quirky. Then you start liking those songs
It’s awesome. It has a super weird guitar tuning which they also use on “burden in my hand”, another great song
Got to see them play it live when they opened for NIN before Cornell died. Probably my favorite Soundgarden song.
Core and Purple are the only STP I really like but those albums were extremely good. Dean DeLeo's tone is incredible
Ooof, one hit wonder? Everyone point and laugh at this guy, this guy clearly doesn’t Molly (16 Candles) nor does he Wax Ecstatic (To Sell Angelina).
I remembered Molly but forgot Wax Ecstatic. I had the Rotting Piñata album. Trigger warning for Nandor the Relentless :
Whoa, random 90s memory unlocked. Remember that movie Angus? Great soundtrack https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Angus_(film)
Pretty good article on how Goo Goo Dolls guy comes up with his alternate tunings https://www.guitarworld.com/features/john-rzeznik-goo-goo-dolls-tunings
I recently came to respect the post Layne Staley output of AIC. At first I wouldn’t give it a chance but that’s dumb given how much of the signature sound came from Jerry Cantrell anyway. Plus the new guy is good
I'm actually going to this. Already have tickets. Looking forward to being blackout and singing Gel by Collective Soul way too loud.
In all fairness, I liked half those bands in the day. I think I had every single Collective Soul CD up until they parted ways with their lead guitarist (after maybe Dosage or the next one, can't remember) and went more poppy. Still listen to Dosage from time to time.
