How about this for an Arsenal scenario: UEFA kicks Arsenal, ManU, Chelsea & Man City out of Champions League/Europa immediately. After summer negotiations, UEFA agrees to demands from “Super League” clubs to give them a higher % of Champions League revenue. Super League clubs agree to drop the Super League idea for now & rejoin the old structure with more ££. Chelsea, ManU, Man City & Liverpool all qualify for Champions League via Top 4/League table. Arsenal have no European football due to league finish & being removed from Europa League.
There’s literally nothing we can do about it, I’m far more concerned about being competitive in ANY league right now
I feel like the CL would have to concede something bigger than more money for this to work out. Like expanding the field and ensuring these “founder” cunts (of which we are one) they will make the CL or at least have a much easier time qualifying each year. What a disaster
They’ve already done that. Today they announced their plans to expand from 32 to 36 with 3 of the 4 new spots being for historical clubs that didn’t perform well enough the previous season to qualify
This is turning into Nuclear War. At some point, the players are going to have to chime in & voice what they want. Do they care about World Cup, domestic leagues, or local fan bases? I'm not sure who wins this. But, this is only Chapter 1 of a long novel. There are going to be a lot more twists & turns. I'll side with whoever figures out how to use VAR.
I very much dislike the SuperLeague thing but some of this is overblown. The idea that the FA is gonna throw away 50%+ of the TV rights to kick those teams out is unrealistic. Likewise, that FIFA or national federations are going to ban players from international competition for honoring their contracts. I continue to view this as the biggest clubs who generate the most money trying to leverage their way into a “better deal.” Think what Texas has negotiated for itself in the Big 12.
Linked in the other thread but thought this was a good fucked either way/what are we clinging to argument Europe’s leagues are broken – a Super League might be the only solution https://theathletic.com/2529349/202...the-only-solution/?source=user_shared_article
Yeah, this is a big game of chicken. A lot of threats being made right now that benefit no one. I wonder what happens to all the TV deals. NBC paid for the Premier League rights to broadcast the big squads. And I'm sure that's the case with every TV contract in Europe. Those companies are coming after somebody if all of a sudden Everton vs Leicester City is the marquis Premier League matchup.
Yep. Or maybe the threat of a Super League might force a solution. It's gonna be messy, but this is gonna cause some changes that have been necessary for a long time.
It's like the EPL breaking away from football League in early 90s for TV money never fucking happened. Bunch of fucking hypocrites...
I do think having fixed clubs is fucked up but this is so overblown Gary Neville of all people can fuck right off with sporting integrity
i admit i’m not well versed in the history of competition changes around europe, but permanently making 15 teams a part of your league no matter what happens seems like a much bigger step than any other changes made throughout european soccer history imo. it sucks, and it’s sad to see. the european promotion/relegation format is 100% better than the format of our sports in the states imo. this is the big 6 in the epl seeing the talent level catching up with them from tv money and new sugar daddy owners and them not wanting to fall down the pecking order and fade out of the spotlight imo.
For the record, if Barca/Real/Man U make sweetheart deals to rejoin ucl I won’t care at all. Arsenal deserve nothing
It’s billionaires going after billionaires. Yet somehow people are finding moral high ground in this. Makes zero sense to me.
just came to post something similar. feels like this is going to end horribly for Arsenal one way or another.
Must be awesome to be recovering from malaria and getting constant abuse for something you had absolutely nothing to do with
Of course this was his meal ticket. all he is left with is the same dumpster fire he went in with. Fuck him. i doubt i’ll care much about Arsenal before something changes with ownership. Arsenal have been nothing but an absolute disgusting club for years now. they dont give a shit about anything other than $
Well, it was a good 48 hour run. Looking forward to watching the Fyre Festival-like documentaries on this.
unless I missed it there has been zero communication from Arsenal on this outside of that tweet stating that they were inaugural members, right?
Have there been any from the other clubs? I havent seen anything from Chelsea etc. either. Doesnt mean its not there, but i havent seen it.
Kinda of a shame we didn’t get Artetas press conference before all this went down. still want him to hammer it, doubt he does
It’s a meaningless apology but I think they’re they only ones who admitted to making a mistake and apologizing so I guess that’s something
“Our owners are 1000s of miles away and won’t answer our calls, please don’t lay siege to the Emirates”
