Ashara is one of the women rumored to be Jon's mother, as there was some romantic connection with her and Ned

Part of the problem with stretching out the Mereen stuff is that they have to allow time for the dragons to grow. Plus you have people taking these long ass sea voyages to reach her. It's a lot of pages to do it, but they had to establish how much Dany and Jon didn't belong where they were.

Finished it about an hour ago. I haven't been in this thread after my first day of reading for fear or spoilers. I think enough time has passed where we don't have to use spoiler tags in here anymore, but since I just posted that I'll spoiler my thoughts and we can just stop using spoiler tags.

Bran - Holy Shit we finally meet one of the children of the forest. I knew we would get to meet one eventually but it was cool to finally see them. Bryndyn probably knows more than any other person, who knows how old he is and how much he knows. He knows as much as the weirwoods do. That is awesome. I was pissed that his POVs stopped halfway through the book. Also I'm pretty sure he was the reason Theon kept thinking he heard his name when he was in the godswood.

Tyrion - Tyrion is probably my favorite character so I loved his chapters, but Jesus Christ George, can a character actually embark on a journey and arrive at said destination for once? Going to be interesting to see how he goes on as a member of the Second Sons. No doubt in my mind he can convince Brown Ben to turn again to Dany's side. Fuck Penny I wish she would fucking die. Feel kinda bad for Jorah, but I've never been a huge Jorah fan so whatever.

Jon - Azor Azzai, not dead, going to team up with Melissandre and fuck shit up bartscotcan'twait.gif

Theon - loved the Reek chapters thought they were well written. I can't hate Theon, I don't love him but i really felt bad for him and it sucks he is so fucked up. Going to discuss him more later

Dany - OH MY GOD these chapters were unbearable until Drogon reappeared. "I can't leave the Meereenese people I'm their mother i have to protect them, I love Daario but I have to marry Hizhadopeioeupf" Give me a fucking break nut up and do what you have to do. Love that she finally came to that realization. Going to be interesting to see how Khal Jaqho recieves her.

Connington - loved his chapters, I think Aegon is real, but I'm not 100% sure, but for now I'm on team Dorne/Griffin's Roost. He needs to chop his god damn hand off though.

Barriston - Glad he got a POV, but I'm worried about how he is going to rule. He has said a million times he was not born for that. I'm worried that the shavepate or someone will fuck him over soon. No way he survives until the end but hopefully he has a good death. Dany needs to get back to him soon.

Jaime - ONLY ONE CHAPTER, REALLY? and what a cliffhanger, Brienne shows back up and runs off chasing Sansa who apparently is in the hands of the Hound now? I think she is actually bringing him back to Catelyn :ohnoes:

Cersei - lol I love that Varys/Aegon/Dany are all profiting from her stupidity. Sucks that cost us Ned and Robb though :tebow:

Kevan - goodbye sweet prince, loved the epilogue, love Varys.

So what about Ramsay's letter? I guess Stannis truly is dead, but if so what happened to Asha and Theon? Did they escape with the Ironmen? What point did the Iron Bank representative serve, was it just to feed the nights watch and return Theon to Asha, or did his meeting with Stannis mean anything? Love Mance and hope he gets a POV and I bet he does.

What the fuck is going on with Littlefinger and Sansa?

If you don't feel like reading my thoughts at least skip to the bottom and read my questions

I took it as she committed suicide because she was heartbroken. She was in love with Ned and when he came to she her again he had been married away and was returning her brothers sword who he had by the way killed.

It was a double whammy of "Hey I cant see you again because Im married now and oh by the way I killed your brother."

I think Dany, Jon, and Bran will be the dragon riders. The children of the forest or whatever told Bran he would never walk again but he would fly.

Also dont think Tyrion is a Targ either

Has to be someone. But it must be someone we don't know much about or is really obscure or something. If it were someone even semi prominent, I feel like Tyrion would have figured it out.

Ashara is pretty obscure and may be to Tyrion. She had to have left at least 17 years before, and I don't recall any story in the book where Tyrion had any direct connection to her.

She would have left roughly at the time of Jons birth so she would have left about 16 years ago

Barristan tells a different story in Book 5.

I have been wondering this as well. Any description of her eyes in book 5? I know Tyrion checks her out as she is getting out of the river. Just don't remember what all he said to describe her.

Off the top of my head I remember Tyrion observing that she has stretch marks (he thinks from being pregnant) and saying that she's more handsome now than anything. I need to go back and look at that description.

I think Bran is done. GodBran is not interesting to me other than as some side act guiding the main characters. Sort of giving some context for the stories of the Old Gods.

I'm sure George could bring him out/cast him down from his current status but that shit isn't going to fly in this type of world. He might guide a dragon to one of his brothers or something similar but he won't be leaving that cave as a godlike figure.

    imo

And out of all those Jon scenarios I prefer JesusJon. Really though I just want a better Bran recovery scenario. If he's dead this story will drop way down my list of favorites. I understood Rob/catelyn/sansa's dog/ even Bran or Rickon but Jon/Tyrion/Dany are off limits for me and Littlefinger better make it to the last book.

A little off topic, but I really don't agree with this theory. First of all, I don't see Bran being involved in this at all, and secondly, isn't the sword supposed to be tempered in the blood of someone they love dearly or something like that? Just doesn't make sense for Cat to be involved like that imo.

Brangod remains in the cave for a while
    Stannis isn't dead
Cold Hands = Benjen warged into a wight
Aegon is real and not a mummer's farce
3 headed dragon is Tyrion Jon and Dany
    Pycelle is a shapeshifting wizard
Littlefinger is going to die cold and alone

Finally finished. Very weird for me to have to wait years for the next book because I started this series in February and read through the series twice before starting this one, so for the past 6 months or so I have read no fiction except this series. What the hell am I supposed to do with my life for the next 5 years?

The Jon "death" only phased me for about 30 seconds, then I realized that nobody who dies at the end of their POV really dies so I'm not too worried about it. So sick of so many fake deaths at the end of a POV, only to have the person show up with another POV a few chapters later.

Starks need to learn to start paying fucking attention to their animals. I mean anybody could see that something bad was about to happen to Jon when Ghost started freaking out, but Jon just shuts him in his room. Interested by the raven calling Jon "King" and calling him by his full name.

Patchface definitely prophecies in his songs. He foretold the defeat of Stannis' fleet on the Blackwater in Book 2 as well.

Mace Tyrell's hand shaped throne made me :loldog:

I mean there are hardly any Lannisters left. Cersei is still there but not nearly as powerful as she was, and Tyrion and Jaime are sympathetic characters. And gay Tommen plays with kittens all day who could wish him harm?

I didn't make the Abel-Mance connection right away either, but somewhere around the time his girls grabbed Theon I figured it out.

Find it queer that the Mad King fucks Tywin's wife on his wedding night and he doesn't take revenge? Jaime didn't kill him until like 17 years after Tywin's wedding, and for a large part of that time Tywin was the King's Hand. Seems like he would serve him for that long without taking his revenge in some sly cunning Lannister type way.

    Big fan of Victarion.

    A few things

    1. Can't believe you guys didn't get Mance and the spearwives were the people that showed up at Winterfell.

    2. Jon isn't dead at least not in the way Ned and Robb are dead.

    3. To the person that bitched about it being called Dance with Dragons but there hardly being any dragons in the book.....Dany is the dragon. The dance is all of these suitors trying to court her (dead Martell, Aegeon, Daario, Mereen fucker whose name starts with H, Victorion, etc.)

    4. Thought it was a really well written book but he's expanded the world too far. We could do without all of the Dorne stuff (from book 4 and 5).

    5. I know Dany is the main protagonist of these books, but I've never cared for her chapters, ever.

    6. What was the part in Bran's chapter about him seeing a white haired woman cutting a man's throat (I believe in winterfell) under a weirwood tree and Bran screaming no?

    7. At some point Jaime and the the Hound have to meet up to go fight Gregor's monster per Bran's dream in book 1. Surprised he didn't get in to that hardly at all in this book.

    8. Didn't Jon have a dream where he's slashing at people with a flaming sword (people from the nights watch, even his brother Rob) at the start at one of his POV's? Foreshadowing of when he's ressurected?

    9. Was so dissapointed we didn't get one more Davos chapter. He's really a great character and that story line is very compelling.

    10. Who killed Big Walder at Winterfell if it wasn't Mance and his bitches?

    12. Not sure how he wraps this up in 2 more books. It seems impossible. He's foreshadowed the real problem and the real enemy is the others when the wall comes down but thats barely been addressed at all. I don't see how they wrap up all of the story lines and unite westeros to fight the others in 2000 pages.

All good points. And he has already said that it will probably take him 8 book instead of 7. In all honesty there will probably be 20 books because it was supposed to be a trilogy... then 5 books, then 7, now 8.

To Illini hockey, I complained about the title. You make an interesting point, but as you say dany is a dragon (singular) and the title references dragons (plural).

We are introduced to aegon so maybe that makes it plural and he and dany are trying to figure shit out.

Having said that, I would have still rather him used this book to get the actual dragons under some semblance of control so they can head back to westeros.

And we still don't know who the three dragons are. You make an interesting point but I don't see how that is the meaning of the title. Not enough clearly defined human dragons actively involved.

Also, is Bran turning into the other God that Mel is always talking about. She said the opposite of R'hllor lives beyond th wall in darkness. They made mention several times how dark the cave where the children of the forrest live is. I have no idea how they are going to tie Arry and Bran back in to the main story.

If this is 8 books, GRRM is really going to have to get working on writing these. I know he' s only in his early 60's, but at a book every 5 years, he'll be like 78 when he finishes these....not sure that happens.
