Literally think the Briscoes have been mentioned like once a page for the last 50 pages with hopes they’d come over

Not to mention like half the wrestlers in both of these promotions people give a fuck about are ROH alumni and now he’s got that tape library

Supercard of Honor is scheduled the Friday night before Wrestlemania in Dallas. Can't imagine they don't put on a huge show now.

I know you get a lot of shit here and sometimes I feel bad, but you posting these two things is pretty fucking ironic. You selling an interview with a 70 something year old man and a former NFL punter that may lead to a WrestleMania match between a 70 something year old man and a former NFL punter as something great then shitting on any other content is holy shit funny.

Here let me break down why this is valuable to AEW….

    1) The streaming component. AEW doesn’t have enough hours of content to go to Warner and maximize value. They just added 2000 mostly unexplored hours of content to their catalog, which is what streaming companies love. They LOVE volume, cause people will never run out of something new to watch. You think people are watching Primetime Wrestling from 1989 (they should, that shit ruled) on Peacock? No. But the option to do see keeps subs up. The Khan Universe just did that.

    2) A new feeder system, with a brand name that might make it actually a money maker. NXT was a loss leader until the TV deal - as good as it was. A common and valid complaint about AEW is the roster is too crowded. Now the Top Flights or the Lee Moriartys have a place to go and work real matches, not just five minute matches on Dark…..AND the brand name is strong enough that, with the AEW backing behind them, they could do a TV taping and pull in 1000 people while providing an ADDITIONAL piece of weekly content to Warner. This thing may pay for itself in 6-12 months, without accounting for the ancillary benefits.

You're not his audience. Indie wrestling is a big as it's ever been right now. I know you refuse to believe it but youtube is the number one place wrestling exists now. ROH has almost 700,000 subscribers to their channel. Danhausen is one of the biggest internet celebrities/wrestlers there is and he was in ROH just a few months ago.

lol nobody gives a shit about the possible match at Mania. That 70 year old man is iconic and hasn’t had a legit interview in nearly 15 years. If people are ignorant of history so be it.

ROH went under. Nobody gave any fucks about them 11 years ago. Nobody have any fucks about them 5 years and clearly nobody gave any fucks about them today or they wouldn’t be out of business. So sure those who think TK walks on water and wants to overhype that bullshit. Go ahead and do it. Nobody was pinning for the return of ROH 72 hours ago and now it’s treated like some massive ground breaking thing.

I believe owning the Library is a good thing. I just don’t think it’s the difference between AEW making a streaming rights deal or not. I don’t believe this is a bad deal in anyway. I’m simply saying it’s not groundbreaking and the reaction to it is overblown.

I’m not against the second point you make either. Lots of positives for the wrestlers that TK employs.

    Sure I do…

I just done follow independent stuff and If something is hot I’ll track it down and take a look. But I’ve never tuned in weekly to ROH or watched any other stuff like GCW.

I do enjoy great wrestling and I get that from AEW currently.

No one cared about current ROH you are correct, it was picked clean by WWE, AEW, and others. But it did birth alot of the top stars in the US. I feel a lot of people are going to want to watch the beginnings of some of these careers on a streaming service that they might already have or would sub to cause of AEW.

I think the HBO max deal is probably done and they're waiting for the timing to announce it and this purchase by TK will pay for itself very quickly. And we have no idea what he plans to do with the branding which is sorta cool cause of the possibilities.

All in all, the combo of ROH and HBO max to me is indeed huge news cause it's going to lead to more AEW growth long term.

I honestly kind of get Bankz. He’s a sports entertainment guy and not really a wrestling guy. It used to work. If WWE still had its Attitude Era, AEW fans would want Bret Hart wrestling Ironman matches every week, while Bankz would want more SCSA or Rock. There were feuds that mattered and were also entertaining. I get that.

My issue is that this is the Vince Era and the entire company is pushed around a top guy and the builds are people to feed to him or stars from the past that tickles his nostalgia fancy. The headline for WM is Brock/Roman, which we’ve seen what, 4 out of the last 5 main events? The womens ME is another part timer and we’ve been fed nostalgia acts to the point where it’s laughable. I just saw that both secondary titles changed hands recently with zero build and everyone else is thrown into tag matches just because.

I wouldnt really mind his thing if he would just admit that WWE isn’t interesting but he loves it instead of acting like we’re all marks for buying into AEW and what they are doing. /rant

I know Bankz has a rep as the “WWE Guy” in this thread, and I’ll be honest sometimes I think he’s just trolling the thread but I also don’t get fired up about what he likes/doesn’t like. That said, I think I can understand what he’s saying about ROH and I’m probably an example of his point.

I like AEW because I know a lot of their roster and I like how it “feels” like more of a sporting event if that makes sense (original NXT was the same for me). Anyways, the ROH news really didn’t mean anything to me. If they do an HBO deal and it’s on there I’ll definitely watch some old events, but as of right now it was pretty meh to me. I think the fact TK hyped it up is where the disconnect was. I expected some kind of announcement that would be more of a WOW to not just hardcore wrestling fans but more so something that would try to capture the regular viewer too. I mean, even some kind of NJPW/AEW type event would have been cooler to me.

So again, I get why people are excited and why it is a big deal long-term but to start the show off with TK in the ring talking about it, I think it probably was made to be too big of a deal.

I get why he hyped it up: ROH was like the ultimate smark fantasy land. It was THE promotion to support when you wanted to show how "real" your love of US-based wrestling really was (though PWG is right there with it). AEW's hardcore fanbase gets to celebrate the fact that ROH won't be gobbled up by WWE but will owned by someone who will respect its legacy. It's also a big deal because it gives AEW better leverage for their next network negotiations, which means they'll be in a better financial position going forward, which means not having to worry about the company going under, etc.

I don't know what announcement (realistically) Tony Khan could have made that wouldn't have produced a "psh that's it?" response from WWE marks.

the only thing interesting about the ROH thing, imo, is that there is a superrich guy looking to buy territory. That's literally WWE's empire game. No small wrestling outfit has been able to play that game alongside the McMahons before. So if anything, it's a signal that this ultra rich mark is a buyer and not some small little Florida wrestling federation to be stomped upon by the WWE's power and money. 90% of the people celebrating the deal will not watch a minute of the ROH library. But I think the signal it sent is fairly significant.

Also I'm more interested in the AEW video game.

I'm with you on all this...

I have 12 years of posting in every wrestling thread on this board that WWE has been dog shit 95% of the time. I enjoy AEW but i'm not going to be a sunshine pumper when they do shit that's bad or stupid. I know a lot of people early on in this thread would be quick to say "Well AEW is brand new, give them time" but it feels like those guys now want to put blinders on and attack anyone who has a negative opinion on something AEW and they instantly counter with "hur dur but look at WWE". I've also largely just stopped talking about WWE in general outside of a few big events when the thread tunes in. This thread claims to have moved on from WWE and the bulk of the convo is all AEW now and thats fine. If more people tuned into WWE weekly I would be in here more often shitting on the product with them. But if nobody is watching who would I have a convo with?

This isn't the first overhyped and underdelivered announcement from Tony and that was the point on my original post. TK isn't hyping these things for the bulk of this thread that's part of his base viewing audience. He's doing this to attract those WWE marks... And he's underdelivering to those people (me). From Christian to secondary shit titles, the fuck up about the forbidden door and now this... The criticism is deserved.

I bet the events are going to be tapped and then added to an eventual streaming library. Prior to the shutdowns ROH was on syndication TV so I think TK is going to struggle to find a home on a major cable outlet. From all rumors floating about one would imagine that ROH would be streamed live weekly on the upcoming HBO Max deal as part of the larger AEW deal.

    TK could provide to HBO:

    ROH video library
    ROH Weekly show
    ROH PPV/Live Events
    AEW video library
    AEW PPV/Live Events

    as part of the deal

Not that it matters, but the following wrestlers held the WWE Championship and/or Universal Championship belts since the WCW purchase and spent significant time in the indies, either before debuting or returning to WWE (or a WWE developmental territory like FCW), based on their match history on cagematch.net. Not counting WWE matches before they signed to WWE, like if they were a hometown jobber for a house show or dark match.

    Bobby Lashley
    The Miz
    Drew McIntyre
    Kofi Kingston
    Bryan Danielson
    Kevin Owens
    Finn Balor
    AJ Styles
Jinder Mahal (lol this guy was a WWE champion?)
    Moxley
    Seth Rollins
    Sheamus
    CM Punk
    Alberto Del Rio
    Rey Mysterio
    Edge
    Rob Van Dam
    JBL
Eddie Guerrero (he was all over the place in Mexico before making his major US debut in WCW)
    Kurt Angle
    Chris Jericho
    Steve Austin

ANd if we're going to include the territories back in the 80s as indies, though that's an entirely different thing than what we think of as indies today...
    Undertaker
    Hulk Hogan

And then on the women's side...
    Becky Lynch
    Sasha Banks
    Bayley
    Asuka

Looking at past AEW PPVs, I think one can easily argue this is the most stacked event they've ever had by a wide margin. Even the Buy-In matches have strong potential in HOOK vs. QT and Hirsch vs. Statlander. Only match that looks like on paper that could be lame is the tornado tag match because the match just doesn't make any sense.
