With some good stories coming out of the Clay Travis thread, we’ll lead with that and add some stories. Quite a few people here have reffed or umpired kids sports, so share your horror stories.

I never did track and field but a school was desperate so I helped out. It was middle school and a parent almost wanted to fight me because her 7th grade daughter almost collapsed running the mile saying I made her run an extra lap.

After the scuffle the coach came up and apologized when the runner said she ran the right amount and she was just sick and throwing up all day but her mom made her compete.

The folks that get booted from children’s sporting events take that as an honor and tells you everything you need to know about them.

If your child is not in physical danger there’s zero reason to accost the official no matter how bad they are.

I coached my son’s baseball team (7 year olds) this past spring. There were some insane parents, but the coach of a different team was the worst. He counts as a parent because his son plays on his team.

This is coach pitch and, while competitive, most people don’t give a fuck. I’m the first base coach when our team is hitting. The defensive coaches (crazy guy) are on the foul lines behind the bases and the he is on my side.

As the first base coach, my only job is to yell “GO GO GO HUSTLE HUSTLE RUN THROUGH THE BAG” when the ball is hit. It’s just that, keeping the base runners on the bag, and talking to the other coaches in the dugout.

Apparently our hero didn’t like that because he stopped the game in the middle of an inning, walked up to our pitcher (the head coach), and said “You need to tell your first base coach to stay quiet because he’s interfering with the game.” I was shocked at his public display of autism and let the inning play out.

After the inning was over, I went up to the guy and said “If you have a problem, come talk to me. This is 7 yo baseball. Don’t make a scene like you just did. Get ahold of yourself.” That got the guy’s attention because he’s now yelling at me “GET OUT OF MY FACE BRO! YOURE MAKING THIS ABOUT YOU! GET OUT OF MY FACE!”

I had to walk away because I was admittedly getting pissed. And that’s how I was 30 seconds away from making the news as another set of overzealous little league dads fighting about hustling down the first base line.

Had two five year olds get into a pushing match at my sons first basketball practice. The two dads jawed at each other the next 5 weeks right up to the last practice/game.

Kid isn't in sports yet, but I've got a good one from my younger days. I was coaching my brother's U10 travel hockey team, There were two parents of the other team standing behind our goalie heckling him for an entire game. Like full on cursing at him saying some vile shit like how every goal he gave up meant his parents would love him less. By the end of the first period, my goalie was in tears. I had hoped changing sides would solve the problem but nope, they followed him to the other side.

Step 1: Ask the ref to go say something. Ref said no, off the ice wasn't his problem (ref was maybe 16-17 so I get it now)
Step 2: Had our adult head coach go over and ask them to stop. Two parents told our coach to fuck off loudly and they got even louder.
Step 3: By this point it was obvious nothing was going to be done and the kids wanted to keep playing. So I left the bench, went over to our parents, and we came up with a plan to have all oft hem stand right on top of the two fuckwads and cheer loudly for the goalie any time either opened their mouth. Was funny as shit seeing 15ish parents crouding into about 5 square feet of space around these two fuck wads screaming in their ears every 5 seconds.

We lost that game but embarassed the shit out of those parents. Coaches for the other team didn't even have the balls to apologize for the fuckwads after that game.

Again, 7 year olds playing baseball, opposing coaches would roast our teenage umpires all game long. Like inning after inning of “what the fuck was that call” kind of stuff. These are kids trying to learn a little bit and give back to the league they grew up in.

I was like a therapist for 13 year olds. After every inning, it was me telling them “Don’t listen to that guy. You’re doing a great job. You know the rules, you make the calls, we have to deal with it. Stay strong and confident.”

After every game, the teenage umpires would tell me “Thank you, sir. I needed to hear that stuff from you.” (Not those exact words, but the teenage version of it.)

I’m not cut out for coaching youth sports.

I did coach pitch on summer. 8am games I typically came in extremely hung over bc it's usually the weekends and I was extremely young, unprofessional, and didn't care.

This is such a low level baseball that you can run the ball into the infield and everyone advances if they are half way to the next bag.

Now this is very difficult if you have 4 runners and have to wait for a kid to get to the dirt, then look at every spots and make a call.

Well apparently I was wrong too many times in a game. Kill me if I wanted a 6 year old to feel good about him or herself and score if it was remotely close. Tie goes to the kid.

Momma coach on one team berated me. Idk if they were even keeping score. I told her she was embarrassing herself and if she didn't stop she'd be gone. I'm like 19 telling this to a 45 year old woman. Slight uncomfortable.

Stupid way to make 15 for $45 minutes

I’ve shared this before but my first peewee (5-6 year olds) football game I had a kid make late hit then stand over the kid he hit growling. I took his face mask to tell him not to do that and his eyes were the size of saucers. His coach said his dad game him a Red Bull before the game to hype him up.

My very first game I ever umpired it was a pre-season rec ball 5-6U softball game my partner didn't show up, and we had a play where the ball was hit and the fielder missed the ball and it struck the runner. I ruled the play dead and the runner out and awarded the batter a single, and a coach lost his god damn mind( I later found out after calling the head ump of the area that since the fielder missed and no other fielder could have fielded the ball I should have kept the ball live . Argued with me like crazy and even got in my face . I ended the game in a tie because I could see weather could see major clouds coming towards us and it just gave off a bad vibe this fucker argued with me on ending the game and I told him look you may not care about these kids safety but I do, and I'm telling you unless you want your daughter and others to get hurt because it is going to get really bad then pack up and get to your cars NOW!!, and glad I decided to end the game and not have just a delay with the girls in the dugouts because 5 mins after I sent the kids home a tornado siren went off in the area and all hell broke loose. I was cleaning up the field when that coach came up to me and screamed at the top of his lungs and wanted to fight me while I was trying to get to my car in the pouring rain with lightning overhead. I never had that rule situation happen ever again in the 3 years and hundreds of games I umped after go figure.

Many years ago I was asked to umpire a 9-10 year old boys baseball game. The game was going just fine until a batter hit a weird little pop fly that hit in foul territory about 15 feet down the first base line, then bounced into fair territory and came to rest about halfway between the mound and first base in fair territory. I had taken off my mask and walked out a few steps and just watched as the pitcher walked over and picked up the ball. The batter was still standing in the box. The pitcher and I looked silently at each other until he must have read my mind and he jogged over to first and stepped on the bag. I called the batter out and all hell breaks loose. Everyone on the batter’s side is screaming “foul ball!” I’m great at tuning out what is being said so didn’t care about that but the batter’s coach took 10 minutes digging through the rule book trying to prove me wrong. He couldn’t find anything that satisfied him so he declared that he was playing the rest of the game under protest. I told him to do what you have to do, but the batter is out so send up the next.

Coaching 13 year old boys in soccer. Down in Toronto for a tourney and we are playing the host team. Their coach was loud and never stopped yelling at the refs. We noticed he was sucking on a water bottle all game. At one point a kid in his team goes down in pain but we can’t find the coach. Turns out he’s in the bush taking a piss because he’s gassed. He stumbles out from behind a tree and we tell him his player is injured. He half hears us but then when he realizes it’s his kid, races ( more likely quickly stumbles ) out there and is trying to pick a fight with our kids to see who it was who injured his son. One of the kids on his team, the old man was a cop. He had to come out on the field and escort him away from game. He apologized and said this wasn’t the first time this happened.
Maybe he shouldn’t be coaching kids then?

I once threw out an umpire and coach from a little league game. I was on the board of our small league and it was my turn to work the concession stand. We have a window that faces the field for parents to watch when their kid comes up to hit. Well I'm making fries or some shit and I hear all of this commotion going on. I look out the window and see the umpire and coach face to face getting ready to throw down. I sprinted from the stand and got in between them before any punches were thrown. I kicked the coach out first and then told the umpire he was done. He was a volunteer and umpired a bunch of the minor league games. As he's leaving the field and walking to his car, a parent "hears" him say that he's going to get a gun. Cops are called and I end up umpiring the rest of the game from behind the mound. Found out years later the guy never threatened to get a gun but said something to the effect, I need a gun to umpire these games. So many stories from coaching, I could post in here all day.

Had a flag football game tonight. We lost 6-0 on a ball that got tipped like 6 times but that’s besides the point.

One of my players dad comes over and throws a bag at his kid and says next time you want to just walk around out there I won’t bother driving up and walks away like he was having a hissy fit.

Little different energy with this one. When we were 16 or so, me and my buddy were reffing some middle school traveling team hoops game. This one team was real aggressive, full press after every bucket. Team would get like 30 steals and layups/game and win by 40.

But rules stated you weren't allowed to full court press if you were up by 10 or something. So some dead ball occurs, set up the inbounds on the baseline for the team who's down like 12 after only about 1:00 into the game, and look here at these little jackasses starting to set up their full court press. Nuh uh, this shits all over the decorum of the game you know the rules BACK TO HALF COURT don't talk back I don't wanna hear it son if you say one more word I will T YOU UP get BACK I say!

Coach for the team gives out a single "WAT?!?" and my buddy shuts him down.

So the little punks scoff and sulk back to half court. Tweeeeeeet ball in. They inbound the ball and score right there on that hoop, because somewhere in the shuffle I guess we sorta forgot which end of the court was whose. So we stopped the game and had no idea what to do and their coach just condescendingly laughed at us and said "just count it, let's play."

    What a cool guy.

Last year at our 9/10 year old championship game we were in the winners bracket and facing a team coached by one of our city cops and our HS baseball teams coach.

They had two stud pitchers and one of them was the HS coaches son. You have a 7 innings pitched restriction for the week and that kid pitched them to a 7-3 lead going into the final inning. They were trying to save their other hard throwing stud for the winner take all game because he had 4 innings left. The ump had been calling low strikes the whole game.

Dipshit cop and HS coach decide to pitch a kid that hasn’t pitched all year. He walks 4 straight batters to start the inning, so he gets pulled. Coaches start arguing at 16 year old kid that is umpiring behind home plate because they think he’s getting squeezed and they aren’t calling strikes up in the zone.

They bring in another pitcher and one of our shitty kids gets a hit to bring the game winning run to the plate and our best hitter coming up. He hits one deep to the outfield and gets a triple, so winning run is on 3rd. With 2 strikes and 2 outs, they have a passed ball and we win on the passed ball. Our runner slid into home and it took out the pitcher trying to block the plate covering home.

Their coach ignores his pitcher who’s hurt at home and goes straight after the ump. I’m at first base and go block him off and start pushing him away from the ump and tell him to walk away. He looks at me aggressively but eventually gets pulled back by his other coaches while he’s cussing this kid up and down in front of 9 and 10 year olds and their parents.

He recently ran for school board as well on the platform of being anti-mask for our kids because of a one month mandate our district had to do to keep schools open. He thankfully lost.

They had no one to blame but themselves by trying to look ahead instead of pitching their other stud and trying to squeeze an inning out of a kid that’s never pitched, in a pressure situation. And then blew his lid, as a cop.

I umpired usssa softball travel tournaments for years, and A and B were always so easy because the level of competition was so high, but working C class or even rec ball was awful. I’ve had to threaten to call the cops on numerous parents, and even had parents try to confront me in the parking lot.

I was 14 and umped 6-8 year old Dads pitch select travel ball for like $20 a game. It was a play at first, with a high throw over the first baseman’s head and the coach yelled “go-go-go” to the runner who takes a hard turn and takes minimum 3-4 strides towards 2nd base. Ball bounces off the chain link fence right to the 1B and the coach is all “back-back” while the runner slide stops and walks back to the base where the 1B was waiting for him to tag him out. He committed to 2B so he was nailed.

I got called a “fucking moron” so loud I could hear the gasps from the parents on the other side of the field. Threw him out immediately (felt like a boss) but he said I’m not going anywhere. Looked at the head coach like cmon what am I going to do while he’s yelling at me. He comes over and grabs the coach and pushes him to the side to leave. Call was inconsequential to the game, they 10 run rule them anyways.

Game over and me and the other ump are walking back to the ump area and old first base coach jumps out from behind a bush screaming at us again. The Head coach happens to be behind us and yells, “Jeff that’s your third strike you and your kid off the team”.

This was my first season coaching and I really enjoyed it from the kids aspect. Seeing the boys improve, gain confidence, etc throughout the season was awesome.

The shitty adults outweigh that enjoyment and it’ll only get worse as kids get older. I’m not really sure I’ll do it again.

This past season in U11 travel soccer I only had one incident I was involved with that had to do with the coach of the opposing team. As the team manager, I'm allowed to be on the sidelines with the kids and coaches so I usually sit on the bench to help the coach out with things like helping kids get their goalie gloves on, getting them water, keeping track of subs, etc. We were playing a team coached by some South American guy who was a tremendous asshole. It was 3-2 late in the game with his team winning, but as our kids were rallying his players started getting really chippy and taking cheap shots on our players. On one play towards the end of the game my son was receiving a goal kick and the opposing player, who had lezz than zero chance to get there before my son turned upfield wit the ball, decides to run full speed and drop his shoulder into the middle of my son's back. He knocked the wind out of my son. While that part was shitty, I didn't say anything. Except as my kid is getting attention from the coach and ref the perp starts pointing at my son on the floor and laughing at him and is egging his teammates on to do the same. The kid then makes eye contact with me and realizes he's in deep shit, so instead of addressing the kid directly (which would be inappropriate), I just turn to the coach and say, "Hey, coach, you need to get your player's attention and let him know that it's not cool to intentionally foul a kid with a cheap shot then laugh at him." Instead of addressing the kid, the coach just turns around and starts screaming at me like a mad man, "You don't understand how to play soccer! Why are you talking to me? You cannot talk to me!" After trying, unsuccessfully, to explain to him calmly that I was less upset about the foul than I was about the kid's reaction, he basically did the fingers-in-the-ears and chanting LALALALA move like a fucking idiot. In the midst of this drama, a second player of his sucker punches another of our players in the face. And when the kid's mom asks for an apology the coach starts yelling at her , too. Fucking douche.

Hoo boy, do I have some stories. Head baseball and assistant football coach at the middle school I teach for and the parents are easily the worst part of the job.

    - In my first year, we had a hole we needed to fill at DE for the 8th grade team and wanted to play a kid who was the third string option at LB. He was literally guaranteed to start there. Dad refused to let him play DE because “he’s going to be an LB in high school.” Kept taking reps at LB and literally never saw the field.
    - Had a baseball dad who tried to get me to go out drinking with him for literally the entire season. I told him it was unprofessional and kept saying no in as polite a way as possible, but he literally never got the hint and by the end, it gave off some very uncomfortable vibes.
    - Had a kid tell a Diamond doll he wanted to fuck her to her face in the dugout while she was keeping the pitch count, he was dismissed from the team, and Mom threatened legal action for kicking him off the team without talking to her first. The same mom claimed that she had paid for $400 worth of spirit pack stuff that she didn’t get and wanted compensation when she quite clearly had gotten $120 of stuff from the BTN website.
    - Last year, kid who was notorious for talking shit and threatening to fight other kids gets his ass whooped after practice by one of the kids he was talking shit to; whole thing is recorded by another kid. Tells mom that four kids jumped him and held him down. Mom shows up at the school parking lot claiming she has a gun in her glove box and wants to see the kids who did it. Stepdad shows up in a wife-beater with face tattoos about 30 minutes later and wants to know when the next practice is so he can “make things right”. Find out later that the mom was trying to bribe kids for $50 in the team GroupMe to find out where the kid who fought her kid lived. Unfortunately for her, the mom of the kid who fought her son is a cop and has receipts for all of this.

I probably have 10-15 more, but those are the ones I thought of off the top of my head.

My last year coaching little league, I had a kid in his last year of little league quit in the 2nd inning of a game because he thought because he didn't attend a Trump rally the day before but instead came to practice, he earned the right to start.

And as far as umpires go, it is a big problem at least in our area. I got back into coaching varsity baseball at our high school 2 years ago and was shocked that there were at least 4 umpires that I remembered from back when I played 28 years earlier. These guys are all mid 70s and one is early 80s and have no business doing varsity baseball any longer. It definitely doesn't absolve the parents of abhorrent behavior but I do get some of the frustration displayed by them.

No one wants to be an official because the pay sucks and the working conditions are pretty brutal. That significantly shrinks the pool of qualified officials and you’re left with a group that’s overworked and overwhelmed.

Kind of the inverse of this story. My dad is an extremely mild mannered guy, and the closest he's ever come to becoming unglued was at one of my kid pitch baseball games.

I was the leadoff hitter of an inning. I'm in the batter's box, defense is set, everyone's ready to go, so the pitcher winds up and throws the ball. First pitch of the at-bat, I lace a double to the fence. I'm standing on second base and everyone's moving on as normal until the umpire waves it off. He, a 16-year-old kid, was at the fence chatting up a girl instead of setting up behind the plate.

My dad was instantly on the fence, laying into the kid. I don't recall any cuss words, but it was a lot of how-dare-yous and the like. I'm pretty sure I got out on the re-do. The ump was technically in the right according to the rule book, which I guess is all that matters, but my dad was right according to common sense.

Moral of the story: Youth sports turns adults into different people, especially youth baseball.

    The gist of it:

We're in the middle of the inning. I'm paying attention to whats going on out on the field. The kid comes up to me and has all his stuff and says, coach I'm quitting. I asked him how come, and he says I could have attended the Trump rally yesterday but I came to practice instead. I laughed and said so, everyone else came to practice too. Guess that didn't convince him to stay.

When my kid played T-ball we had a dad always yelling at his kid, always negative. Would yell "quit throwing the ball like a girl"

She was a girl (and the best player on the team)

I can relate to this. My younger sister was a great athlete and played little league with the boys. She made the district all-star team and was a starter. The 3rd game of the all-star tourney, the head coach couldn't make the game and his assistant took over. Well he pulled my sister from the lineup and put his kid in who was not nearly as good. My old man went up to the coach and told him in no uncertain terms that if my sister wasn't put into the game, he was going to have a problem. Next inning, my sister trots out to 2B.

This topic is fascinating. While nothing egregious, there are a couple posts in this thread already in which users think their actions were justified that I’d say are in a gray area.

In every horrendous parent fight at a sporting event, there’s one side that believes they started out doing the right thing. Anything other than de-escalating a situation is suspect in youth sports in my opinion.
