This isn't making it harder to get an abortion or cause a miscarriage. Are you familiar with Misoprostol?

I understand that, but his point made it seem like there will be huge drops in abortions, and that's just not true.

Thinking that because of this law the numbers would drop. People are still going to abort, they just won't do it safely/legally.

Because someone couldn't possibly do it to themselves by "accidentally" falling, or using a wire hanger.

Or most commonly, taking Misoprostol, a stomach ulcer medicine.

    Abortion[edit]
Misoprostol is used either alone or in conjunction with another medication (mifepristone or methotrexate) for medical abortions as an alternative to surgical abortion.[18]Medical abortion has the advantage of being less invasive, and more autonomous, self-directed, and discreet. It is preferable to some users because it feels more "natural," as the drugs induce a miscarriage.[19] It is also more easily accessible in places where abortion is illegal.[20] The World Health Organization provides clear guidelines on the use, benefits and risks of misoprostol for abortions.[21]

Misoprostol is most effective when it is used with methotrexate or mifepristone (RU-486).[22] Misoprostol alone is less effective (typically 88% up to eight-weeks gestation). It is not inherently unsafe if medically supervised, but 1% of women will have heavy bleeding requiring medical attention, some women may have ectopic pregnancy, and the 12% of pregnancies that continue after misoprostol failure are more likely to have birth defects and are usually followed up with a more effective method of abortion.[23]

Most large studies recommend a protocol for the use of misoprostol in combination with mifepristone.[24] Together they are effective in around 95% for early pregnancies.[25] Misoprostol alone may be more effective in earlier gestation.[26] WHO guidelines recommend for pregnancies up to 12 weeks to use 12 tablets of 200 mcg (micrograms). The woman should put 4 tablets of misoprostol under the tongue or far up the vagina and let them dissolve for 30 minutes. She should wait 3 hours and repeat with 4 pills under the tongue or in the vagina for 30 minutes. She should wait 3 hours and repeat once more.[22] It works in 90% after first attempt and, in case of failure, the attempt may be repeated after a minimum of 3 days.

Misoprostol can also be used to dilate the cervix in preparation for a surgical abortion, particularly in the second trimester (either alone or in combination with laminaria stents).

    Based on what?

When abortion was legalized the number of abortions increased 20 times the amount of illegal abortions.

It’s really not unreasonable to think there would be a statistically significant decline in abortions. In fact it would most likely occur.

This guy wants people who may have their guns stolen unbeknownst to them and used to kill someone “held accountable” and charged for murder.

He’s also an abortion expert. Lol. You can’t make this up!

Samesies. We were told the baby likely would not make it to term. It was 95% likely the baby was going to die within a few weeks but if he magically made it to term likely would be deaf, blind with no capacity to ever care for himself. We made the heart breaking decision to terminate and even last week little lawnole said "remember my 1st baby brother that was sick and went to heaven. I wish I would have gotten to give him a hug before he went." It took every bit of effort to not break down crying.

I've had a few family members change their stand on abortion after watching what we went through.

I think it's like anything that's illegal, some people will still do it. However, I think any barrier to the activity, whether it's abortion or guns or weed, is going to have *some* effect. Saying nothing (literally nothing??) will change sounds absurd.

Not before today, but i primarily work with antibiotics. Is it obtained without prescription? I’ve never heard of it, so i assume the majority of the general public aren’t too familiar with it either.
My point still stands. You seem to be talking out of both sides of your mouth.
In one thread you argue vehemently that making abortions illegal wouldn’t affect abortion rates and in another thread, you argue that making guns illegal would lower gun crimes. Your argument that women would just take Misoprostol if abortions were illegal sounds similar to gun nuts saying, “even if you ban guns, people will still make them with 3D printers”.

Sorry to hear that. It’s certainly not a black and white/easy topic.

Why I support abortions - regardless of term. The kid will likely be a strain on society if the parents didn’t want to have it in the first place and I wouldn’t want to be the hypocrite that had one for a reason like yours or simply because of an unplanned pregnancy with someone I knew I didn’t want to have a child with after being “pro life”.

That's a terrible decision to have to make, I'm sorry you and your family had to go through that.

I wish we could have real discussions that involved these types of situations, and consider laws that make provisions for this.

My cousin also terminated after the baby was diagnosed with...I can't remember the name of it but where the baby's skull doesn't close and the brain stem is exposed. They were told that the baby may make it term. If it does it will be blind, deaf, and essentially brain dead. The longest a similar baby had ever lived was 6 hours after birth.

They decided to terminate as any reasonable person would do. My mom's best friend who is pro-life said my cousin's wife should have carried the baby to term anyways. I lost a whole lot of respect for her after that.

I mean the WHO literally provides guidelines on how to use it. You may be familiar but anyone looking to end a pregnancy can learn about it very easily.

Making guns illegal means less guns on the streets. Less guns on the streets means less gun violence. Little Johnny that wants to shoot his school up can't get a gun from his parent's closet. Making abortions illegal doesn't make access to an abortion/miscarriage all that difficult. There's lots of alternatives to a doctor's office. They aren't safe but they are available.

One is an object. If the object doesn't exist, the affects of it are lessened. The other is an act. Making that act illegal won't make people stop doing it.

    Exactly - it deters it.

And your comments about the guns not being accessible at all after guns are all of the sudden illegal but the abortion alternatives to a doctors office are readily available when abortions are illegal is all-time DBL. You are forming your narrative and working backwards and in between just using whatever logic helps you get there - regardless of how dumb it sounds.

I can't imagine being in those situations, but I think I'd make the same decisions you and your cousin did.

Broad discussions like this are difficult because you have such a huge range of opinions. Being pro-life or pro-choice seems to mean something different from person to person almost. I think I'm pro-life, but I don't think life begins at conception. I don't agree with your mom's best friend. I'm not religious. I agree that there are times, when the mother's life is in danger, when the kid has the kind of issues you are talking about, etc. when exceptions need to be made and should be legally allowed.

I generally think allowing elective abortion of a healthy fetus is not a good thing. I do see the argument that it's an overall good for society, as most of the aborted kids would have been a strain on society, or worse, but I think that's a pretty dark means of improving society, and a hop, skip, and a jump away from eugenics and genocide. You also undoubtedly eliminate some what would have been great people that way as well.

Like drugs, alcohol, gambling, or whatever other thing a local jurisdiction decides to outlaw, this will not deter but simply push to shady and unregulated practice.

My guess is there will be a fair number of women who die/suffer serious trauma because of this ruling, and likely little to no reduction in actual abortion numbers.

It seems like Pro-life= you can’t get any abortion ever for any reason.

Pro-choice= you have the option to get one within a certain time frame (except in rare situations).

I don’t know why being prochoice is such a controversial thing. You can personally be against having an abortion while still believing others should be able to make the that decision for themselves.

    Unfortunately, I think you’re right.

I think their idea is people will be more responsible and plan ahead, but they aren’t walking in these people’s shoes and it won’t be that simple and have the positive results they hoped for.

Personally, I think this is a case where we actually should be real and educate women-especially on the consequences of unplanned pregnancy (lack of freedom, financial struggles, missed opportunities at a young age, quality of life for them and the child, etc.) and make birth control readily available. That would lead to better results for everyone involved.

I am rarely just trolling for effect, but it's not easy having discussions on message boards when anyone can take pot shots and derail conversations, or act in bad faith with random OMG u are such an idiot! type stuff. These forums are not great for respectful disagreement with someone's opinion.
