Really enjoyed the movie. But thinking about what I just watched, a human climbing this surface with no rope, afterwards, really about set me into a panic. Absolutely nuts
Definitely felt my palms get sweaty while watching. I cannot even fathom the actual feeling of physically being that exposed and alone with nothing.
Because I really want to see it. I live in a small town and the closest theatre it came to was over an hour away
Mine were sweating watching Valley Uprising last night and I’m sure the intensity doesn’t compare to Free Solo
I was planning on going to Imax this week but it sold out in a few hours. Valley Uprising is great. K2 Killer Mountain is another good one--part re-enactment and part actual footage. And of course Meru
I absolutely loved it. The climax of the movie is intense, even though you know he lives through the climb.
Can we all agree to not bump this thread unless, 1) he does some new epic climb, 2) he craters, 3) or his girlfriend post nudes?
I apparently have a mutual friend with him (why I posted the Vegas update) will definitely make an active effort to try to meet this crazy bastard. I don’t think he really goes out much though. I feel like partying and dangerous climbing may not be the ideal combination - or maybe they are, who knows?
He's a vegetarian, so it wouldn't surprise me. I'd imagine one might be a health nut, if you do what he does.
Coming back to Imax or one more week! Going to see it either tomorrow or Tuesday. Poor timing to have it return for Super Bowl Sunday. Would be a perfect Sunday evening experience on almost any other day of the year.
There’s an ok doc on amazon I think with him and Hazel lead climbing in South Africa. But like 2/3rd’s of the way through without really referencing it, he just free solo’s some route. Then he got lost hiking back to camp for five hours. Also he did mention he only drinks water.
Just saw it. Damn. That was incredible. I think he has a mild form of aspergers, I dont know how else you can explain his unhuman focus and lack of emotion. But I think it’s also a big reason he’s able to do what he does. Didn’t like the GF. She rubbed me the wrong way.
Glad I saw your message. Went this morning. I've known for two years that he completed it, but the IMAX version still made my hands sweaty. He's definitely an interesting character study. Love the comparison someone makes early on about measuring the feat itself. Phelps is the most famous athlete that you could reasonably compare Honnold to, and this feat basically equates to Phelps having in the Olympics where he won 8 gold medals...except if he didn't win all 8 of them, he drowned. Also really enjoyed him reviewing the move list the night before his bailed attempt(I think). Wonderfully shot, all around. Can't wait until I can buy it.
It joins Meru and Touching the Void for me as the best climbing docs I've seen. Will want to watch it again before I place it above Meru (both shot by Jimmy Chin). The dude is just a machine and I don't think he finds much joy in anything besides climbing. For example, after completing the free climb, possibly the greatest climbing achievement in human history, what does he do? Does some hangboarding in his van for the rest of the afternoon. I don't think he drinks beer, but would love to grab a beer and shoot the shit with him. Despite his weird personality, he seemed funny as shit and very witty. Loved the part where he was talking about ex-girlfriends worrying about him dying, and his response was "you don't really care. You'll find someone else and move on."
I started searching for Free Solo online a couple weeks ago and couldn't ever find it, but it did send me down a rabbit hole of climbing documentaries. I've seen a shitload of them now and still have zero desire to climb, but I really like watching other people attempt these seemingly impossible climbs. Riveting stuff
