All my shots from this weekend came out blurry because I'm still a camera noob, some setting got changed and I didn't figure it out until I got home. Pretty lame, still good enough for ID's though. I don't know if Owsley or cutig are well versed in Empidonax Flycatchers, but I could use help IDing this guy. Spoiler Unknown Flycatcher American Kestrel Say's Phoebe
Warblers are definitely on the move. Black-and-white, American redstart, and northern waterthrush all in the yard today.
Damn, that sucks. How old is it? btw, flycatchers, especially those out of my range, are the bane of my existence. My best guess is the southwest subspecies of willow flycatcher (extimus) but that’s nothing more than a guess.
enjoying the thread here. I've got a Redtail Hawk that has been very active over my yard. i usually have some very bold squirrels and have not seen near the numbers i am used to lately. hopefully the hawk is doing work on those bastards.
5-6 years old. Yeah, I feel like the flycatchers are impossible to ID without video. Like, a Gray is identical to a Hammond's except the Gray flicks it's tail down when it's perched, hard to get that behavior in a photo.
My hummingbirds are absolutely chowing down right now. Hope to have them another week, but they could be gone tomorrow.
My buddy just saw two Red-Whiskered Bulbul's in a tree outside his house. Wtf, are they even supposed to be in California? edit: looked it up and they are from Asia. Weird. This his pic, pretty sure they are Bulbuls (Not his pic)
Migrants continue to pour through on their way south. Gray-cheeked thrush and an alder flycatcher in the yard today, along with dozens (if not more) orange-crowned warblers, which will remain through winter. Also had a few American redstarts earlier in the week.
Nice. We've got Orange-crowned year-round here, have had a bunch of Yellow-rumped Warblers start showing up this week. Some people in Pasadena have been seeing some Gray Catbirds and freaking out about it.
There has to be 100+ warblers in my hackberry tree right now just gorging on wooly aphids. It’s unreal. All orange-crowned that I’ve been able to identify so far.
You getting any good migrants yet? Like hermit or Townsend’s warblers? I haven’t seen any hummingbirds for a few days now, but went ahead and refilled my feeder for probably the last time until spring. Always bittersweet.
I've only ever seen Hermit Warblers in the mountains, and they've been closed because of the fires. Saw one last May though.
In the forests of Pennsylvania, biologists have managed to catch an incredibly rare bird that’s genetically part male and part female, split down the middle and displaying the vibrantly colored characteristics of both sexes. https://www.iflscience.com/plants-a...lfmale-halffemale-bird-found-in-pennsylvania/
I didn't see the mountain pic above this, and was about to ask how you were able to get a picture of a bald eagle at night over the ocean. Yellow-rumped Warblers (Audubon Warblers where I'm at) are everywhere right now. This is what they'll look like in March. (Not my photo).
Is anyone doing eBird's Big Day this weekend? I'm probably gonna try and knock off a couple checklists before Bama v Georgia.
Saw what I am pretty sure is an immature Cooper's Hawk. Brown streaking on the breast, and the yellow eyes are a sign of immaturity. Here's an adult I got a pic of a couple months ago.
Actually landed on a tool under my arm on the last one. A quick google indicates scientists believe it is not truly being friendly, but being somewhat 'aggressive' in protecting it's winter nesting site. either way, no problem with me or my neighbor. She said she was reading on her patio and it 'wouldn't leave me'.
Down at Cape May migratory preserve for the day - here’s the list. (Buddy is the real so excuse spellings) Bald eagle Egret Osprey Peregrine Falcón Purple Merlin Yellow rump warbler Swan Mallard Green winged teal Spoonbill Canada goose Lots of gulls Shoveler? His favorite was a half albino (forgot the word) warbler My favorite was a flock of egrets all flying by at the same time because it sounded like a freight train.
Forgot to update this. Didn’t get a whole lot because I spent most of the trip smoking and boozing, but we went for a walk on the national seashore one morning and I got two snowy plovers. Huge highlight.
the Eastern Phoebe sat on my head today while I was checking him/her out. I think they are attempting to protect their nest, otherwise, just a way chill bird.
