Gonna try and find some Orioles tomorrow, they've been in LA for a few weeks now. Some more stuff from the past few weeks. Spoiler Greater Yellowlegs Northern Mockingbird Red-Crowned Amazon Northern Rough-winged Swallow Red ass House Finch
I was in northeast Florida for work this week and had some pretty nice birding mixed in between. American white pelicans, American avocets, black-necked stilts, yellow legs, dowitchers, peep sandpipers, clapper rails, northern shovelers, blue-winged teal, Florida ducks, northern harriers, tri-colored and little blue herons, snowy and great egrets, and plenty of the other usual suspects. I’m not sure there’s a more graceful, or beautiful, shorebird than the avocet when in breeding plumage and performing courtship routines. American oystercatchers may rival them for beauty, but certainly not grace.
Really neat experience tonight sat on the back porch playing with the Cornell app Played the song (1st one) for the red winged black bird and there were a few around and the would sing back after I played it this went on for a good 1/2 hour
Still waiting on my first hummingbirds to show up, though my goldfinches are pretty much in full breeding plumage at this point and I’ve still got some purple finches, white-throated sparrows, and myrtle warblers hanging around. I’ve really enjoyed a group of chipping sparrows that have taken up residence underneath the feeders and in the yard. They’re so tiny, but really beautiful and joy to observe.
They were the first to arrive at my feeders. Once I started tossing seed on the ground to draw them in, other breeds followed. #gatewaybird
I put them out in the spring. Bluebirds, Carolina wrens, robins, and mockingbirds all appreciate them.
Yep, I used to feed my bluebirds all the time. They loved it. Would fly around me all the time when I’d put them out on top of their bird box.
I saw some birds in the park next to my house yesterday that I've never seen before Black bodies with orange heads Looked to be about the size of a large warbler or sparrow or something They were in a group walking around on the ground Rolled right up on them in the golf cart. But they didn't fly off immediately, like we had time to wonder outloud what they were, but I didn't have my phone ready to grab a picture Then after kayaking around I saw them again, but when I tried to get a picture they flew up into a tree while I was walking up but too far to get a good picture Kinda thought they'd let me walk right up to them. I'm gunna try and get a picture today if they are there again I can't find anything to ID what they were listed in all the pictures if texas birds I can find
Didn't get any great photos today, but saw some good stuff. I've never seen an Ibis before. Spoiler White-faced Ibis? Canada Goose Barn Swallow gathering mud for the nest. Lilac-crowned Amazon Spotted Sandpiper in breeding plumage
Almost positive I spotted a Red Breasted Merganser on the river today. It was in flight and I got a pretty decent look at him. Super cool!
Friend had a painted bunting fly into window @ his home... now that I know they are in the area, I must bring them to the yard Spoiler Just stunned... flew off after a few minutes
Holy shit talk about serendipity. I was coming to this thread today to ask if anyone could give me an idea of what this very bird is! My wife and I were taking a walk this weekend and a bird with this color pattern popped out from a ficus hedge. The colors struck me because I’ve never seen a bird like that in South Florida. It took off too quickly for me to get my phone out.
Went to that Bear Divide mountain pass this morning. It's the lowest route through the San Gabriel mountains going north, and during peak migration, has tens of thousands of birds going through. If you stand on the side of the road, the birds fly right at and over your head. Had Orioles, Hummingbirds, Swifts, and Warblers flying right over me. Also saw 2 lifers, a Black-throated Gray Warbler and a Warbling Vireo. Got some OK pics. Spoiler Nashville Warbler Black-throated Gray Warbler (2 bad pics) Better view of the face Warbling Vireo Western Bluebird
This was in WSJ today. I just ordered one. I’d imagine the biggest pain in the ass is going to be charging intervals, but I absolutely love the idea. Ship in October. www.mybirdbuddy.com
Gonna go back to the mountains tomorrow, see if I can see more Warblers. A couple of my buddies are now into birding, so we just eat some edibles, bring a few beers, and hike around and see what we see. It's been purty fun.
Started seeing the Grey catbirds in the last week or so. Have had a much more diverse array of visitors to the feeder of late
I put a new lens filter on, and my pictures from today came out blurry which is a bummer. Western Tanager Acorn Woodpecker WIlson's Warbler
Dusk Activity... Still weighing getting 200-600mm lens for my Nikon, or Coolpix 1000, with the insane zoom. Spoiler
