His writing for the New Yorker is outstanding as well. I think I’ve posted it here a few times. Let me see if I can dig it up.
i find maybe the most fascinating part of bourdain how much he grew over the years, think its impossible to recreate that in binge watching old shows but is important when reading the old books to seek out his own criticisms of his work, how he felt somewhat responsible for continuing a really bad legacy in kitchens, etc
I think this is a huge part of why he is so beloved - he would voice his opinion but was overtly willing to try anything new, see anything new, embrace any unfamiliar culture and adjust the aforementioned opinions. Obviously while also being a best-selling author and elite level chef.
I'm assuming I may be the only person on the board to have worked under michelin level French chefs (possibly not just never heard anyone talk about it) - believe everything you read in Kitchen Confidential on how ridiculous the kitchen atmosphere is. It's like a fraternity Hell Week every day.
randomly clicked on some episodes as it's streaming on hbo max the other night, happened to be the night before his birthday. growth thing might not be more obvious than how he talks about the san sebastian eating societies from here to the san sebastian episode on parts unknown
Flicking through parts unknown and landed on the Pittsburgh episode and was not ready for an interview with Big John Fetterman
i don't understand people being upset about the voice thing at all is it better when docs have people trying to replicate the voice? actors doing the subjects voice? its all the same shit especially when they used his actual words
it is kind of weird and creepy but how is having a computer voice read his quotes putting words in his mouth its quite literally his words
but maybe he would not choose to say them if he had the chance to decide. Let his past words live in the past. Don't emulate his voice with technology. Pretty simple.
then i hope you hold this for every doc that has actors reading written words of the subjects, which is literally half the docs that are made
Just to clarify - is it statements witnesses claim were said, his writings, what exactly did they replicate? Don't have time at the moment to read the article.
pretty good review by a writer i tend to like really sad stuff that is relatable to a lot of people. desperately wanting a change but being afraid to actually take that step
the Argento section gets touched on in the GQ interview with Neville, basically that if he went into that story full go it's an entire doc by itself and not just a "Tony" doc so he wrestled with how to deal with it without it taking over the whole thing
seems a bit hasty since apparently most of the reviews are positive. the one i posted for example has a completely different conclusion
saw it'll likely be on hbo max at some point. article i read implies it may be available to rent as early as 8/3
God damn you’re fast with the quote button. You’re right I continue to read originally I thought they inserted words and created thoughts to certain situations. Not sure if that makes sense.
i do not have a strong opinion either way. i probably lean more towards the its weird and creepy side. just wanted to say it certainly isnt putting words in his mouth
Oh I agree. Just seems like a perfect instance of these people asking if they could rather than if they should.
Haven’t watched it yet, but I can’t imagine it was healthy traveling for as many days per year as he did, let alone having to be “on” so you can film an episode each visit.
Lmao wtf? It’s pretty simple you thought they were literally making shit up with his voice, and now that you know they’re using words he actually said, you’re making up some bizarre stance that makes you look even more ridiculous just to cover up an incorrect conclusion you jumped to that’s not even that bad. Just move on to another thread.
As someone who travelled a lot for their first job it does get really fucking lonely and exhausting and discombobulates your life really fucking fast.
listening to the dave chang podcast with the director he says he found out quickly that bourdain treated him differently than david choe despite them all hanging out and being great friends as a trio, and it is made bare in the movie, because he thinks tony was afraid he'd push him down the same path towards self destruction that he was on where as David Choe.....DAVID CHOE...was healthier and able to be one of the very few people bourdain would lean on you're in a dark spot if choe is your moral compass and emotional bedrock
What about David Choe’s behavior would make you think he wouldn’t add stability to someone’s lived experience?
this made me think of my first exposure to choe what an insane series this was, and on searching for it Gavin McInnes was still at Vice and was the one who hired him, noted founder of fascist group the Proud Boys
I saw the movie last night and thought it was really good. They did a nice job showing that he was a genius but also someone with very real demons that often engaged in obsessive and/or self destructive behavior. Overall it seemed pretty fair to all involved but I can see how his last gf comes off more to blame for his suicide than she was
