I’ve just never minded them though. Four of my eight groomsmen were Catholic and all but one of my wives bridesmaids were Catholic so we had 75% of our attendees as Catholic so they thats why we didn’t think anything of it.

Was raised Catholic, went to Catholic school through fifth grade, so most of the weddings I attended through college were Catholic. Once I started going to non-demoninational weddings and Jewish weddings I realized that the Catholics do this wedding thing all wrong.

Jewish weddings are just as long from the two I have been too.

At least they aren’t as long as Indian weddings. My wife was in one and it’s a three day event.

Honestly I feel a little disappointed at your Catholic wedding flask game. I would have expected better.

Depending on how bad the priest is at a Catholic wedding I sometimes wonder if I'll bowl him over with my breath by the time we get to communion. But in most cases they end up being a Jesuit so they can drink me under the table anyway.

I always forget the midwestern portion. Most of us out here in CA basically don't go to a wedding between the ages of 10-25.

Mostly it was extended relatives who were older — didn’t go to any weddings involving friends or similarly aged relatives until my mid-20s.

the Republican in 2016 certainly gained notoriety questioning the religion of the current president. And certainly the Republican apparatus did the same in 2012 and 2008; not the candidate himself.

But that was not over catholicism. Just like everything, as the majority group sees their #s decrease = they expand the definition of whatever characteristic defines them to keep their #s above a plurality. Why you dont see distinction in protestant denominations, catholicism, etc as much anymore. Now its just Christians at large. (But perhaps, this really just coincided with Irish, then Italians, and now some Hispanics, being included into American White-ness after facing invidious discrimination; coincidentally those groups being predominantly Catholic).

Exactly how the Italians and Irish went from being discriminated minorities to eventually being considered white. And since both nationalities are overwhelmingly Catholic, there ya go.

I don’t recall anyone running a campaign against Obama attacking his religion, but questioning which faith he actually practiced or if he practiced anything, like Trump.

I can tell you, I questioned Rubio, who claimed to be a Catholic, but attended Mormon and Baptist services. That appears to be very disingenuous, and more than likely means you are lying to get votes.

Catholics are the largest denomination in this country. Italians, French, Irish, Germans, Spaniards, Mexicans. Brazilians, Slavs, Slovenes, etc. There has been 1 Catholic president. There has been an anti Catholic bias in this country for 200 plus years going back to the 13 colonies

I'd argue that's a pretty slippery slope. I mean we live in a country that was founded on some pretty shady shit that's forgotten about because the winners write the history books, not to even mention all the shit going on right now. I'm sure there's stuff about the Catholic Church lost to the annals of time that is pretty horrific. And that's saying something considering the history of the Catholic Church.

The differentiator in my mind is essentially why I note that I'm not a Catholic sheep, so I'm not really thrilled when folks throw a blanket over everyone. Rick Santorum and I are both Catholics, and I would argue that he's a much shittier Catholic in keeping with the true values of "God" than I am. If something is fucked up, I'm going to call it out, and if it's within my own house (or church), I'm going to call it out until it's changed or not be complacent with it.

I can understand an argument that states "You're Catholic, therefore you're complicit", but I'd retort with my comment about change having to come from inside anyway and that I just generally disagree with that argument position.

Good on you for wanting change and it’s easy for me to say the whole thing needs to be killed because I don’t care about it and think the world would be better without it.

But it can’t be reformed from within without being fully transparent ... something the Catholic Church will never be.

I was raised a Catholic, attended/survived the schools, the whole nine yards.

When I reached young adulthood I started to pull away as I began to realize just how exclusive my religion was.

When the misdeeds of the Catholic Church regarding child abuse began to come to light I stepped away for good.

Everything that I was taught my in early life still leads me to feel a deep-seated fear whenever I find myself doubting the existence of a higher power. Still, I look at the way the world is and I think to myself "there's no way".

I guess I'll find out someday.

I think there are a lot of people who benefit from religion, even if it's for their own selfish personal reasons. I think actual reform of anything is hard enough as-is, reformation of an institution that is 2000 years old... well, if Rome wasn't built in a day was ever more true...

I'm obviously biased but I feel somewhat better about the corruption system within Catholicism compared to grifters out there selling healing juice, building giant churches where they can get off on their own ego and then go and get in their jet that their "followers" paid for, but that's probably a debate for a different day.

Obama was elected twice. And McCain and Romney never attacked his religion.

Wilson was an anti- Catholic and campaigned on it.

Were there conservatives that attacked Obama’s religion or lack there of, of course, but it wasn’t the man running against him for president. Which was my point from the beginning.

If you can find me someone that did what Wilson did, I will gladly add them to the list, but I don’t think you will.

I don’t agree with anyone attacking someone’s religion. You believe what you want.

my entire point was trying to shrink the scope as narrow as you did is silly and self serving in some misguided persecution complex. trump called obama a muslim regularly to build his platform for '16, he spreads anti-semitic conspiracies regarding dual loyalty (ding ding ding same ones anti catholics did back in the day). romney played footsie with the birthers (coded), mccain let his surrogates run with obama madrassa secret muslim conspiracies endlessly.

also what specific campaign are you even referencing between Wilson/Smith

cause a primary scope you're getting into Hillary sharing Obama photos, Huckabee questioning religiosity, etc

For the record, I couched my statement as it being the candidate party's apparatus...not the candidate's campaign itself.

To establish the point that very recently we have seen the invocation of a candidate's religion in a campaign (and even worse - while in office), so it would be pretty believable to see it happen again (responsive to your "I cant recall" disbelief).

I have always enjoyed the catholic weddings Ive attended, but had to do with the superior venues than religious ceremony so not really relevant to thread topic. The culturally hispanic ones in particular have been a blast.

Nothing lamer than a baptist wedding with a cash bar imo. Id rather sit through mass and profit with the increase in alcohol.
