I don’t doubt kids want things to go back how they were — that’s unfortunately not on the table though

No, of course not. But some things are closer to normal than others. Seemed to be what he was getting at.

Absolutely won’t be normal but they are in developmental stages and social interaction is important.

My stepdaughter arrived here from Colombia in January and only had about 6 weeks of school before things shut down in person. The other day she was saying how sad she is because she’s been here 6 months and doesn’t have any friends. On top of that she needs in person ESL classes. My wife and I can only help her so much. We don’t have the training necessary to teach a 6 year old a new language.

A more structured learning environment is very important. How much can kids learn from their parents that are already likely super stressed?

somewhat off topic but I have a lot of friends whose kids go to primrose and a lot that don't. It's amazing how much further along the primrose kids are versus the non-primrose kids. Not sure if that's a local deal or not, but I can definitely see the value of the extra cost of primrose

2-year-old son went back to daycare on June 15th. They keep all classes separated. Parents provide breakfast/lunch. No cafeteria, they eat in the classrooms. All staff has masks (all of them have the ones were you can see the mouth, which is pretty cool). Parents and kids' temps are taken every morning. Kids' temps are taken at lunch and after nap time. 4 different drop off points depending on the class. Have been impressed with how strict everything has been.

This is in Kentucky, where things have been going fairly well. A little worried about the recent uptick in cases. Mask mandate went out last week, from my observations, 99% of people are following it. I have worked every weekday out in the market, no office. Don't spend more than 20 mins in accounts, have worn a mask since beginning of April.

Wife is working from home (30 weeks pregnant) and will be until at least 2021. Before daycare started back up, both her OBGYN and our son's Pediatrician had no problem with us sending him to daycare with my wife being pregnant. I was skeptical, but my wife wears the pants and she would be the one having to continue working fulltime/watching our insane 2-year-old.

My mother, who just turned 60, is a teacher's assistant. Don't think she will be going back, even though she is healthy and no known underlying health issues.

Feel bad for other parents in worse circumstances, harder-hit areas.

My youngest two are in daycare, we’re undecided on them. My oldest is in 5th grade, and they already said masks will be required. I don’t mind that part of it, but the intermediate school he’s going to doesn’t have AC. I’m not having my 10 year old suffer all day in a 90 degree room with a mask on. Might have him do the first semester online.

We’ve considered daycare or a sitter in the event I go back to work, but most likely I’ll be watching him full-time.

I’m thinking about fashioning a baby saddle for one of the dogs so I can focus on making more cat bow ties.

Exactly. This is going to happen at schools all over the country and lead to them being shut down for extended periods.

Yea their curriculum is awesome and absolutely worth it. That's the main reason we let her go back recently, she learns so much there. We tried to do some teaching stuff at home and they were sending the lessons to us but it's just hard at home. She wanted to play, not learn, bc she's just used to playing at home. The pack mentality is real with the kids too so when she sees others sitting down to learn something then she does it too. At home she's like "I no want to, watch old Elsa (Frozen 1), please."

if anything i’m seeing more posters who don’t work with adolescents in any capacity willing to risk killing the people who do in the name of development that they themselves don’t fully understand. like obviously kids being in school is optimal for their development but the trauma many are about to experience is going to be crippling. are those kids just collateral damage because you can’t do a spreadsheet with kids at home?

Nothing is close to being normal. The problem is people in power want to pretend things are normal. Our government’s failure has made things worse 7 months into this pandemic.

At that age, they’ve already hit their full retirement, so the ones left standing are usually the most dedicated.

I think a surprising number would be more inclined to take retirement if their district was doing virtual and they couldn’t be around the kids.

I have a 6th grader and 3rd grader. Older in private, younger in public. Los Angeles is fucked up and complicated without a pandemic. Private school is providing two options - either 100% in person or 100% remote. We're going with in person, figuring it's easier to adjust to remote than the other way around. LASUD is not going back to school anytime soon, so we're either trying to get the younger in the same school as the older at a significant discount or do the remote thing with public school supplemented with tutoring. Biggest concern is with the younger not getting the education she needs - mom and I don't have time to do it ourselves with work obligations.

Undecided. We’ve discussed 2/3 days a week in daycare to give us a break as we will both be working from home permanently moving forward.

Other option is continuing with the nanny but shits expensive.

Yeah that’s the thing that I don’t understand from all the “we want them to get back to school for normalcy, it will help hem learn”. Kids going back to face to face learning right now will be anything but normal and it will be pretty much impossible for them to actually learn anything. Face to face schooling this year will be nothing more than state babysitting and managing the virus. But hey, as long as it gets your crotch fruit out of your house during the day again, fuck those teachers/bus drivers/custodians/etc amiright?

I think my sister is pissed at me. I teach in the same district as her son, who will be in 1st grade.

Her: "I really hope we go back at in a few weeks as scheduled. My son has been kinda traumatized by having to be away from all his friends with just his younger sister to play with."
Me: "Well, imagine all the trauma he'll go through when his uncle is dead because you didn't want him to be lonely."

The local school made a FB post saying they weren't requiring masks. A parent commented "great, wearing a mask has been proven to cause psychological damage". So, the same type of person that calls others a snowflake on a regular basis also says wearing a piece of paper on your face is enough to cause mental health damage.

I sort of get it. For kids like mine they have no siblings at home and watching peers at school do things allows them to express themselves and learn things. Hard to get that from home.

Beats people dying though because we gotta sacrifice grandma to open Footlocker.

I totally get that and think that is vital to a child’s growth to get that social interaction as well as face to face learning. What I think a lot of people who are saying that don’t get is they still will not get any of that during the current situation. Teachers are going to be spending their entire time mitigating virus transmission and retraining kids how to act at school and around other kids.

“Hey kids, were going to go out to recess but remember, you can’t use the playground equipment and you have to stay 6 feet from anyone else. Sorry, you can’t play kickball. No you can’t throw a football to each other. Nope, no tag anymore. Sorry, you can’t play with your friend from the other class, they have recess out in the softball field now. Yes, you have to wear your mask, I know it’s 98 degrees outside. Have fun!”

There is zero percent normalcy if we send kids back to school. The entire school day schedule is going to be drastically different as well as all the procedures your kids have learned over the years of how to act and what to do at school. Kids will be more weirded out by going back to school now than by continuing distance learning.

My wife is a nurse practitioner and I work for a company that has been deemed essential for lockdown purposes. My company gives us the opportunity to work 2 days a week from home but that wouldn’t do me any good cause then I’d still have to send my kids somewhere on the days I work. So I would have to quit my job in order for my kids to do at home schooling.

This feels like a fact-less, overdramatized, take.

We live in a time when you have to teach 7 year olds how to react if there's a person in their school looking to murder children with a gun. You seem to have a pretty terrible idea of how much children compartmentalize things.

love the impossible situation we put families, teachers, school district employees, etc into due to massive incompetence

i'd say the majority of my friend group aren't sending their kids back even if offered the option but also are privileged to be able to do that, this includes before school aged kids abstaining from daycare as well. one was a teacher who quit his job to basically teach their kids at home.
