It's going to be stressful for children and everybody else. I don't see how they're going to keep the doors open consistently until we have a vaccine.

I also just don't see virtual learning as any type of solution on anything other than a short term basis. My wife was killing herself posting lessons and taking care of our kids and even then the amount of content kids were getting was much less than normal. A lot of pediatricians think it's the right move. To act like that it just selfish parents who don't want to take care of their kids is beyond inane.

So what are you going to do when a kid in their class has COVID but their parents give them some Tylenol so it doesn’t show when they get their temp taken by the school in the morning?

Congrats, your kid has COVID now and has to come home for at least 2 weeks

to act like the risk and danger being forced onto teachers and staff, their families, isn't real and sizable enough to be considered is also inane

Aren't most of the places in Europe open for the younger kids but whatever they have for high school is mostly remote? I think I would support that line of action. I have a couple kids that are elementary school age that have really suffered from a social interaction perspective over the past few months. my oldest is really introverted however and is doing fine.they go to a private school that is very on top of things so I feel like we are actually in a decent place all things considered.

No, that’s literally the plan for the county I live in where my wife and a bunch of my friends teach. All the schedules will be reworked because you can’t have classes move from room to room and be in the hall at the same time together. You can’t have them take recess at the same time because they can’t be on the playground at the same time. You can’t have them in the cafeteria together. You can’t drop them off early in the morning to hang out on campus until school starts. You can’t dismiss kids at the same time if they walk or ride bikes. Your kid rides the bus home but their Tylenol wore off and they have a fever? They ain’t getting on the bus so guess who gets to come pick them up now while they wait in the COVID clinic with the nurse in PPE comparable to the ICU. The car line takes 30 min to pick them up? That was before, now it takes an hour because you can’t let the kids sit outside together while waiting for their rides and they have to come from the classroom one at a time because, again, you can’t have them in the hallway together.

There will be nothing in common between what they have been doing and what their schedules and experiences will be in 3 weeks.

yep, it’s super fucked up that we have to teach children what to do for that type of situation. That will still need to be taught but how do you think a code red drill will work now if kids have to be separated because of COVID? How will a fire drill work if you aren’t allowed to have multiple classes in the hall together at the same time? The politicians making these mandates have no answers for this in all of their plans

My son went back to daycare when they opened GA back up. Had good protocols then right after Memorial Day Weekend they closed down for 2 weeks due to a teacher having a positive test. He went back after they closed but then my Wife tested positive and now we pulled him from daycare for July.

He will go back in August. Since they also do after school care I imagine their will be a few times they close for 2 weeks during the fall.

Fuck Trump and every Governor that opened early. Should have actually shut everything down back in February and put in real restrictions but too many "My Freedoms" snowflakes cried. We should have been past this!

In that scenario I use my sick and vacation time to cover the necessary days my kid is at home.

My only other option is to quit my job, hope I can sell my house, and then attempt teaching my kids at home. My school district has very detailed reopening guidelines, a mask policy and is offering more online options for older kids in order to keep the numbers at school down.

So right now, I am hopeful that these plans work out. If not, then I will have to take more drastic measures. I don’t like that teachers are being forced to go back to work, but our government is not interested in helping people who have to choose between working and their kids. It is a shitty situation all around.

Why kids won’t learn anything face to face this year if sent back to school represented by Maslow’s hierarchy of needs

I was just saying kids in brick and mortar school is closer to normal than virtual learning.

I am not claiming that just being in brick and mortar is back to normal. No school year is going to be anything close to normal this year.

Kind of close to where we're at. We have no health issues and my wife has much larger chance of bringing it home since she is a nurse working on the covid floor, if she hasn't done so already, and my daughter wants to go back given the choice. She's also 13, so I can only imagine how tough 3 kids under 10 is.

also fuck those pediatricians. would they see 25-30 kids at a time in their practice? most of them probably make parents wait out in the parking lot.

Of course there can be overlap but if the deficient needs like safety are not being met the higher needs are unattainable.

In other words, if kid is thinking about how they might get sick everyday, he ain’t going to give a shit about his math lesson

It's great that people want to point to these pediatricians that want kids to go back for mental health reasons but the school day isn't going to be anything like it used to be. The kids can't play and interact, the teachers can't teach and interact like they all want/need to.

Our schools just came out with their guidelines and it's wack (yes, 90s slang. That's how wack it is)

Is there a reason to not have high schools do online only for the first semester? Then maybe send some elementary kids and staff to the high school building to have more space? Maybe it's a logistical cluster fuck.

It's also difficult to be 100% sure of information you get because it's been so politicized and somewhat conflicting. Like Israel's medical and public health officials seem pretty certain schools caused an outbreak.

If only virtual delivery is offered, the gap between the haves and the have nots will just continue to grow. I understand the concern, but there needs to be some in person delivery option. Some form of hybrid delivery would be best in my opinion.

My thing is, I already saw up close the affects of virtual learning on my kids from March through May. They didn't learn a thing and it was terrible for their mental health. Why guarantee a repeat of those outcomes all to avoid the chance they contract a virus that, statistically speaking, won't hardly affect them?

i don’t think it’s all that fair to expect the exact same type of online/distance learning you saw at the end of the last school year. It was plans thrown together in literal days. It’s not ideal or great at all but at least with the fall there has been much more planning and preparation going into it, at least you would hope but it could be not true if your district is run by real dumb people.

I will do anything I can to make sure my kids are safe. I have lost a child and sat at the hospital at the bedsides of two others. One with leukemia in the icu who I thought I was going to lose too and the other with what we thought was meningitis. Fuck putting them in harms way no matter how small the odds. But, hey you do you man.
