Actually pretty good. They all seem like reasonable fans. Helps that two are in radio. I also like how one guy hasn't been watching soccer for very long. It's a good perspective to have.

It's only 40 min. Worth the listen assuming you get stuck in Atlanta traffic like the rest of us.

Atlanta United youth academy to kick into full swing in fall of 2016
Posted on October 12, 2015 by Ives Galarcep

    By IVES GALARCEP

ATLANTA— Major League Soccer’s next expansion team is still more than a year and a half away from kicking off. We know the team’s name, but its first head coach and first signing are still some ways away.

Something else we now know about Atlanta United is that the club isn’t waiting around to start forming the building blocks of what it hopes to be a successful team.

Atlanta United is set to announce on Monday its plans to launch a full youth academy starting in the fall of 2016, with five age groups joining U.S. Soccer’s Development Academy, the nation’s premier youth setup.

Atlanta United will field teams in the U-12, U-13, U-14, U-16 and U-18 age groups in 2016, a year before the first team begins play. It is an aggressive timetable compared to those seen by past expansion teams, but owner Arthur Blank knows the importance of setting the right tone in a market he knows very well.

“We’re bringing in everybody earlier than we have to based on the MLS timetable because you want to get them comfortable with the market, and understanding what’s going on here,” Blank told SBI. “Listening to everybody and getting a good sense of the soccer fabric in Atlanta.

“We’ll do whatever we have to do to make sure it’s first class and world class,” Blank said of Atlanta United’s youth academy. “We’re equally excited about the youth part of this as we are excited about playing professionally.”

Team president Darren Eales and technical director Carlos Bocanegra have already made inroads in the Georgia youth soccer community, a highly-competitive landscape that already features two top academy programs in Georgia United and Concorde Fire. In fact, Georgia United agreed to move out of the U-16 and U-18 Development Academy age groups to help make room for Atlanta United in 2016.

MLS teams haven’t always enjoyed the most friendly of relationships with established youth clubs when entering into established markets, but when Atlanta United hosted a luncheon on Monday for members of the greater Atlanta soccer community, the sense was that there has been a very positive reaction to the club’s arrival on the scene.

“They’re not coming in trying to bulldoze,” Concorde Fire director of coaching Ken Kurilec told SBI. “They’re coming in saying ‘How can we all work together? How can we make the whole program better? How can we market soccer better?’ I think it’s been nothing but positive and we fully support what they’re doing. I think they’ve got the support of Georgia soccer.”

“It’s very professional, and Mr. Blank has been involved with our club for a long time, with his son playing for us, and we know how he approaches things with his ownership of the Falcons,” Kurilec said. “I feel like the branding he brings to the academy is going to help us and everybody else.”

Concorde United is a nationally-recognized club with 2000 players and more than 130 teams, and while Atlanta United’s arrival into the market is destined to cost the club some top talent, the sentiment about the club’s arrival remains positive.

“It’ll be great to compete against them,” Kurilec said. “Are they the upper part of the pyramid? Yes, but we’ll compete and I think that’s going to be the fun part of it. Many times, when someone new comes in and brings something better, and tries to raise the standard, that just makes everybody better.”

For Georgia United, which has been the strongest club in the area in recent years, Atlanta United’s arrival is coming at just the right time.

“I just think the community is ready for it,” said Dave Smith, executive director of Georgia United. “The owner of the team has been a strong supporter of sports in Atlanta for a long time, and the minute we heard he was backing soccer I think it was easy for most of the city to get on board with.

“It’ll impact our development academy program a little bit, but we believe it’s going to impact it for the better and provide the best possible environment for us to grow talent out of Atlanta, and the state of Georgia, and even the Southeast to help feed through the Atlanta United program.”

Launching the club in the fall of 2016 will mean a faster timetable on being able to bring Homegrown Players into the Atlanta United first team, and will also mean getting the ball rolling on improved player development options in a region that has already established a reputation for developing a high level of top talent, with Clint Mathis, Josh Wolff and, more recently, Sean Johnson and Jack McInerney among the ranks of professional players from Georgia.

“It’s an established market, and there’s already a talent pool, but adding a resource pool to the talent pool is going to be immense,” said Clemson University head coach Mike Noonan. “You can see that there’s a great deal of talent that has come through here, but I don’t think it’s been focused in the way it can be focused now.”

im always torn on this. I lean towards being more American...but at the same time i get the "credibility" with being more European. Put another way...when the London Sillynannies become an NFL team, i would imagine them to act much more American and not be London AFC (American Football Club).

but i really wish Atlanta United was SC not for the American/Euro reason...but simply because the Falcons organization is actually called Atlanta Falcons Football Club.

So much for the Dekalb County training facility

Atlanta United to Build Training Complex in Marietta, Cobb County, GA

Atlanta United, the city’s Major League Soccer club, and the City of Marietta have entered into a binding memorandum of understanding to build a state-of-the-art headquarters and training complex in the Franklin Road Corridor in Marietta. The project represents more than $50 million in new investment by Atlanta United to the area and approximately 80 high-paying jobs by 2017.

The 32 +/- acre site will include six soccer fields and will serve as the headquarters for Atlanta United players and staff. The facility is a catalytic economic development project announcement for Franklin Road.

“Since the approval of the Franklin Road Redevelopment Bond by City of Marietta voters in November 2013, the City has worked tirelessly to revitalize the Franklin Road Corridor,” said Marietta Mayor Steve Tumlin. “On behalf of the City Council and myself, we would like to thank the citizens of this great City who gave us the ability to purchase the dilapidating properties along Franklin Road and market that greenspace for economic development projects. It is because of the trust the citizens instilled in the City that we are now able to call ourselves ‘Home to Atlanta United!’”

The Marietta facility will serve as a training ground for the club’s first team and youth academy program and will be the host site for various youth development programs and tournaments. Atlanta United matches will be played at the new Mercedes-Benz Stadium beginning in 2017.

“We are very pleased to have found a home in the City of Marietta for our training complex, which further enhances the great support we’ve already received from the soccer community in Cobb County,” said Atlanta United President Darren Eales. “We look forward to not only developing a world class training facility, but also to engaging with the community and contributing to the revitalization of the Franklin Road Corridor.”

“This project represents an important milestone for Marietta and Cobb County,” said Brooks Mathis, senior vice president of Economic Development at the Cobb Chamber and executive director of Cobb’s Competitive EDGE. “We’re excited to partner with Atlanta United to bring quality jobs and economic growth to Franklin Road, and this is just the beginning. The corridor has ample acreage that’s still available to develop and market to prospective companies. This project is the realization of the vision of redevelopment Marietta’s citizens and civic leaders put into motion just two years ago.”

Atlanta United will also partner with the City of Marietta to develop a joint use community park along Rottenwood Creek and trails, bringing multi-use fields to youth in the community within walking distance of the training complex. The additional fields, which will be paid for, owned, maintained and managed by Marietta Parks and Recreation, will give the City and Atlanta United the ability to host tournaments and community events.

Planning for construction on the Atlanta United training complex is expected to begin immediately, with completion estimated by early 2017.

As for Atlanta United FC, keep an eye on current Columbus Crew SC assistant Josh Wolff as a coaching possibility. Atlanta does have interest in him, and he’s from the Atlanta area. Wolff and Atlanta technical director Carlos Bocanegra have ties as past U.S. men's national team and Chicago Fire teammates, as well.

Atlanta United FC are reportedly close to signing the first player in club history – and it’s a name that would make waves around CONCACAF.

According to ESPN Deportes, Atlanta, which will enter MLS in 2017, are in the running to sign Mexican international Marco Fabian from Chivas Guadalajara. Fabian, 26, is also reportedly weighing an offer to move to Germany. If he signs with Atlanta, Fabian would reportedly spend 2016 on loan to a European club before rejoining United for their 2017 expansion season.

Fabian has spent his entire pro career with Chivas, aside from a year-long loan to Cruz Azul in 2014. He has 56 goals in 215 career Liga MX appearances, and has six goals in 25 career caps with the Mexican national team. A member of the El Tri squad that won the gold medal at the 2012 London Olympics, Fabian made three appearances for Mexico at the 2014 World Cup.

I think it would be a mistake to go the Cesc (or any similar creative central midfielder that's accustomed to playing with world class players surrounding him) route. As far as signing an aging superstar for a first year franchise, I would prefer a CB or an attacker that can create goals for himself if necessary. Benzema (if not in prison) or Higuain are my two not so realistic options I would like.

I think the focus is 100% on United and its brand. It would confuse people on having two teams in Atlanta from the get go. Plus the logistics of running two teams and building rosters would be a nightmare. They will have a USL affiliate when they start out and I would bet for a few years before they start a second team.

Major League Soccer (MLS) club Atlanta United and USL club Charleston Battery today announced a one-year partnership for the 2016 season with potential for an extended affiliation.

“Partnering with the Battery as our USL affiliate makes sense for us on many levels,” said Atlanta United president Darren Eales. “The affiliation gives us the opportunity to sign players in 2016 and develop them in a high-level, professional environment while adding value to the Battery’s existing roster. We also like the close proximity of Charleston to Atlanta which gives our supporters an early opportunity to attend matches and contribute to the atmosphere.”

Per league mandate, every established MLS club secured USL participation by the start of the 2015 season in an effort to foster quality league competition for developing young talent. The Battery partnership allows Atlanta United to begin its USL affiliation one year ahead of the club’s 2017 opening season.

“Our ownership philosophy has always been to have affiliation and to support MLS, going a long way back,” said Charleston Battery president Andrew Bell. “We like being affiliated with an MLS brand, and we’re hoping to get some significant contributions to our roster through this partnership. We definitely want to see Atlanta United succeed, and we’re excited to be a part of what they are building.”

As Atlanta United continues to hire key staff in 2016, the Battery affiliation will allow the head coach and technical staff oversight of signed players as well as academy players placed in Charleston. Atlanta United’s staff will work closely with the Battery to provide technical, sports science and performance support.

“This is an exciting step in the development of our club,” said Atlanta United technical director Carlos Bocanegra. “Charleston Battery is a well-respected, well-run USL club. Affiliating at this point gives us time to build a strong working relationship and allows our players time to train and compete together. We look forward to working with the Battery to develop some of our young players ahead of our opening season in 2017.”

The 2016 USL season will begin in late March.

Yeah there is no way another city would get a game. June 1 is the opening target date and the season would likely start at the beginning of March. Last year Toronto was in the process of expanding their stadium and didn't have a home game until May 10th which was their 8th game of the season. My guess is that they would try to backload the home schedule and/or have 1-2 games at the Dome before they played at the new stadium.
