I'm currently looking at jobs in Austin, what part of town would be most desirable to live in for people in their mid-20's?
NWestGator, Downtown I'd say if you have the loot. Your best bet would be to look around where Whole Foods is. The closer you get to the Sixth Street bar area, the more expensive it is. Otherwise, probably just north of campus. My girlfriend lived in a compound-type townhouse around 33rd and Red River and paid about $900 with utilities.
Well, depends on a lot of factors. I'd certainly prefer to move down there with a friend, but I'm not sure how realistic it is. I guess it would depend on my job, which I don't have yet and have really just started looking, so hard to say as of now. Was your girl in a 1 bdr?
My favorite places in Austin: Food: Ranch 616 Franklin BBQ Hopdoddy South Congress Cafe Moonshine Gumbo's Uchi Vespaio Bar: Crown and Anchor (day drink) (good burgers) Cain and Abels (college bar) (day drink) Abels On The Lake (Younger crowd, mixed college and 20's)(day drink) Gingerman (beer selection) Takoba (ignore hipsters, order mimosas and breakfast tacos) Red's Porch (south lamar, excellent views of the hill country upstairs) Logan's (shitshow bar) Blind Pig (rooftop bar on dirty 6th) Iron Cactus (for the third floor rooftop, it's a college crowd though) Flying Saucer (beer selection) Opal Devines Dry Creek (It's an old house they turned into a bar, you go upstairs and it's really chill and low key with awesome views of the hill country)
North Loop or Hyde Park. Reasonable prices, not too far from downtown, bitches everywhere, etc. And there's Riverside, where you can live for pennies, but your shit may get broken into every now and then. Depending upon where you're coming from, you wont regret the move. Very few American cities match up to Austin in my opinion.
I'm coming from Portland, OR (if I end up doing it), a city I love, but I'm badly in need of change right now.
Well, better looking weather and females in Austin. Job market is also in better shape. Portland is great though, so idk.
My girlfriend lived in a 6 bedroom house so yea, her rent was going to be cheaper regardless. I'd live on South Congress if I wasn't going to live downtown
i lived for my last 3 years of school in 2 houses in hyde park, highly recommend it. they were large houses with a lot of roommates but i paid 425 to share a room and then 510 for my own room. I am now out my house lease (still dont have a job/money) so im staying at my familys lake (travis) house. gf just got a place at riata and its pretty nice (shes splitting a 1250 2BR no utilites, which is very fair. mini breakdown of relevant places to 20 something hyde park - semi expensive but lots of options, renovated houses, old houses, plenty of studio type apartment places. The triangle is a pretty new complex with shopping/pools/decent bar/a few restaurants. the northern boundary of central austin. i think my friends last year were paying 1600 for a very nice 2BR. lots of girls at triangle, but Hyde park is austin at its finest. mishmash of families, hippies, students, professors, etc. i know some guys that just got a recently redone house (fantastic shape) 5 guys in 3 rooms for only 1700. South congress- can be expensive, will be mostly younger people with decent jobs, basically the south border (even though it runs north/south) of central austin downtown- super expensive , but mainly condos and purchase opportunities rather than rent. ive heard of like 1400/1br in the heart of downtown far west - students (plenty of asians) cheap, decent number of apartments, pretty safe, close to downtown. plenty of <$450 options. riverside- east of 35 in an area taken over in the last 20 years by Mexicans. cheap options but again you run the risk of either shady neighbors/residents which may at some point enter you unit without your permission/knowledge. I would not recommend living in WC (esp to someone whos graduated already) personally, id like to find a higher end place at far west. 6 or 8 minutes from downtown and it would be nice to save a little coin when you are first out on your own (furniture, perhaps a car, etc) they are exceptions for each of these, but post a complex/community and im sure one of us has had experience or know a little about it.
Just moved out of my place on W. 42nd St between bull creek and Jackson. Pretty new cheaply built houses, that looked alright. 5 bedrooms for $3400 or $680 a person. The neighborhood had a mix of everything from undergrads, to grad students, young professionals, to families and even some hippie Sr. citizens that lived across the street from us, but didn't give a shit what we did. There's a nursing home on Jackson that fucks with your parking, but other than that it's really convenient place to live. Mopac is literally right there, DT is a $10-$15 cab ride and there's lots of good food on Burnett which is about a mile and a half away. There is also an appartment complex called The Post (I think its a large chain of appartments thought, but its by 45th and bull creek) where some of my friends lived and they enjoyed it. Lots of tail going in and out of there whenever I drive by. Like Bullitt said, post what you're thinking and those of us that have lived there can give you a better idea of what you might be in for. The 20s crowd in Austin lives in a pretty concentrated area so I'm sure somebody will have good advice for you.
Hyde Park/North Loop > South Congress for mid twenties in my humblest. I'll be living off 51st and Zennia this semester. A little further out than I wanted to be from campus(2.5 miles I think), but it's a nice contemporary house, and my share of the rent is only $775. Also, for those who are looking, there's a 6 bedroom, 3 bathroom has with a hot tub with two more rooms available off 45th and Depew. Rent was $750 with all bills paid I believe.
Austin needs to expand their light rail transit infrastructure to service all parts of the city and run late night too. The Capital MetroRail doesn't cut it either. I would love to be able to miss rush hour traffic, parking downtown, and avoid IH-35.
They're real nice but I would consider the triangle pricey compared to house in the same area (hyde park)
The triangle is affordable? You're better off leasing a house with roommates in Hyde Park or North Loop.
I have 2 good friends that live in Austin and planning to go down there this fall-- one friend says come for a Texas game to tailgate, the other says to come for ACL (Oct 12-15)... I'm not a huge live music guy, but he says it's just an awesome weekend overall... Any advice? (the game options would be Sep. 8 New Mexico, maybe Oct. 20 Baylor, or Nov. 10 Iowa St)
ACL is amazing and he's right about the weekend overall. If it's your first trip it will highlight all that is awesome about Austin. Just cab it over taking the shuttle buses. The cabs pull right up front and are there lined up when you're ready to leave.
Moonshine's chicken fried steak is one of my favorite meals on the planet. You have to plan out your afternoon for the ensuing thunderdump, though.
Those games kind of suck or else I'd say go to a game. I think Austin is fun every weekend and I actually never went to ACL.
I'll say coming to Austin for SxSW or ACL is different than what Austin is normally. I think both weekends are a blast for visitors but I hated both SxSW and ACL when I lived there (~5 years) because it brought hipsters from all over the country and put them in one area.
I absolutely love Austin, but I think the tailgating left a little to be desired. Because of the stadium location, you're doing a lot of standing around in parking lots. Don't get me wrong, it was a great time. It just wasn't unique.
Yeah the tailgating setup isn't ideal. I always tell visitors to go to Scholz's (or Abel's if they are younger).
Thread is now much more relevant to my interests. I've been a few times, good city, look forward to checking out recs itt.
theyre going to post the full lineup sometime tomorrow, but have been leaking some of the bands over the last few days http://consequenceofsound.net/2012/05/austin-city-limits-music-festival-2012-lineup-lottery/
I actually left the game in the 1st quarter of the game I went to (La-Monroe) and watched the rest of it at Scholz's and went to Abel's after. Both great places.
Yeah if you're visiting you gotta hit up the dirty 6th at least one night. Blind Pig and Maggie Mae's are the decent spots.
What's the place that looks like an O'Charley's and has those massive draft beers? Big fan of that place.
I think you're talking about Logan's. Did they play ridiculously loud music and videos? That was our blackout bar in college.
